As far as I am aware yes.
If I remember, I can head over to where the new dorm building is to go up and see if they have started any prep.

I can't remember the actual ratio but it was something that stuck because I always wondered why ODU didn't have taller buildings outside the BAL since we are so tight on space. Maybe they don't have enough spots or don't want to build taller garages? They have taken out a LOT of parking the last several years. I also vaguely remember hearing from a professor that the new engineering building was built so that you can't build it higher, which in my mind was a mistake. We got the plans for that building and used them for a scheduling class.

While I was learning about Civil Engineering and construction I always imagined ODU's campus like a mini-city, with several tall buildings throughout campus. Even if we build more that are no higher than the BAL that would add a lot more space for dorms/classrooms, offices, etc.

Funny thing is the library was built for vertical expansion and they didn't do it, they built out when they renovated.

Based on residential buildings typically having slab to slab heights of 10' or so per floor, you could probably get a 10-12 story residential building in and still be less than BAL or whatever it's called now, which is probably 13-14' slab to slab even if building height was a factor.

Bad part about residential towers on campus - we'd be becoming like VCPoo. Ugh.

Here is the link to the plans for this project. Didnt realize they are moving it to the back of campus. Must have more trust that the area behind campus is improving. Hopefully

This looks similar to the current building... I actually thought I was looking at the building on 45th street in that rendering until looking closely. Anybody know what will happen to the old Child Study Building?

It never left campus. Currently they have 2 locations on campus. One near Powhatan on 49th in the trailers and one on 44/45th street across the street from BAL near the library. They are consolidating these 2 into one location and then using the land down 49th for more dorms.
From what I can gather, bids are due by today from contractors on the new Chemistry and Life Sciences building. This will also replace the Pretlow Planetarium with a new planetarium in the building. This will be adjacent to the new student union.
Correct me if I am wrong, but we have refrained from high rise buildings because:

1. It doesn't fit with the campus architecturally
2. Concerns with navy and commercial air craft and taller buildings
3. The larchmont and lamberts point civic organzations
4. The land under ODU is essentially swamp and the cost to ensure the building is structurally sound is prohibitive

This is my recollection as they were discussing this way back when they did the first expansion of the library

Thanks for the pictures MBB. For a campus that is landlocked and under extreme shortage of free space this is an absolute waste of resources. Ofcourse i am not talking about having or not having this child study building but the plan to have it take the entire space they are planning to use. Why not incorporate this into a bigger building that is at least 3 story tall along with others that are in dire need of upgrading. The way we do somethings is just plain stupid or am i being ignorant in assuming so. Can we not incorporate child study center's into a building that's built for another purpose? Is there a regulation to leave it isolated or something.

I think the whole thing about the land not being able to support larger buildings is somewhat hearsay. Yes it is very close to water, but without doing borings at that exact location you dont know what is beneath that site. BAL is 9 stories tall. I dont think a 10-12 story building is all that much different. The new residence hall is going to be in the 6-7 story range and I think that will work just fine.

Well by taking that lot back near Killam they are reclaiming 2 locations more in the heart of campus for other projects. Not really sure what the issue is?

IRC the stadium couldn't be moved to the water due to the soil.
I'm sure some sections are better than others.
I think the best place for a 10-12 story residence hall would be on Hampton Blvd at the current site of the ODU Inn. That thing is an eye sore and a waste of space.

Agreed. Thats a nice prime piece of property that has much potential. The land is likely more firm there too since its farther from the river.
I never understood the purpose of the inn. The sign outside is tacky and it's a small ugly building in a large and highly visible lot. It would significantly improve the landscape if it were replaced.

Sent from my SM-G930F using CSNbbs mobile app
I dont think I ever stepped foot in the Inn once. I think that is a no brainier for demolition or renovation
I have no idea what it's purpose is. But I'm a terrible judge of use of structures like that as I was a prototypical commuter.
Did some digging. They need to get their website priorities straight. They have photo galleries up of all the old dorms but nothing for the stuff.

Thanks didn't know we are reclaiming a couple of space but even then building something like this in a separate lot and building it only to accommodate this sounds lacking foresight.

Well I agree it may seem like they dont have a plan sometimes, but we are already seeing how much they are deviating from the master plan with many things such as the football stadium, child study center and barry art museum. But they are also on track with new dorms and the chemistry building replacement in conjunction with the master plan so I say lets just let things play out and within the next 5-10 years campus is going to pretty cool and better than it already is. Its come so far in the last 10 years and I bet it will be even better around 2025.

But in all honestly the only thing I want is Phase II!

Also, strategically this makes perfect sense because they are trying to locate the majority of the academic and living spaces on the same side of Hampton Blvd. I think it is a very wise move to relocate the CDC to non prime campus space.
Once they they are done with building new structures across campus they will have more money for athletics
They need to start buying up properties on 42nd and 43rd street on the west side of Hampton Blvd. Slowly but surly take over.
