Yes, we are planning for future expansion as well, so we will need the extra room. I'm not even sure the site is large enough for a 30K football stadium and a softball field w/o tearing down Whitehurst Hall. As for UAB's o/c stadium plans; may God be with you, as it might take devine intervention to have that happen. Good luck.

do you guys think we will grab the extra space by closing the street and relocating tennis courts as well?

I really think that Whitehurst Hall should be moved, as well as Powhatan Apts. In the Perkins+Will assesment of property conditions study they were both rated as in fair/poor condition and in need of major renovations. IMO all of the housing structure in that area need to be replaced elsewhere on campus and then razed to make adequate space for not only the new football stadium, but the planned adjacent softball stadium. Perhaps in the presentation given this past Monday it was just presented as a need to replace the Powhatan Apartments, but not communicated or reported that need includes Whitehurst also.

I am hoping for that as well and i don't see that happening with out including the space adjacent (including the road) or not tearing down white hurst and a little intrusion into lamberts for a little breathing room.
Whitehurst and Powhatan can go if needed and there is alot of blacktop in those two areas that are wasted space that can be built up a few stories . There certainly is space available there.
Is that Golf course really needed? I mean its only 9 holes.

I think whitehurst stays and gets renovated. If they were planning on demolishing it they likely would have announced it and moved the stadium closer to the water.
Or it may be that Whitehurst is included in a separate part of the master plan so as to deflect some of the cost that is going into this football stadium project over to the academic side. The more buildings you propose demolishing in order to make room for football, the more likely you are to have people questioning the decision.

1. I don't believe ODU owns the course or the land it is on.

2. I don't believe that land can support any other meaningful infrastructure.

I have read somewhere that the west of the golf course is on landfill and is not feasible for any construction on the top of it and also its not owned by ODU.
I think you're right on both counts. I know Lambert's Point Golf Course is a municipal.
This link shows how we need to add a women's sport to stay NCAA compliant. You can pull up any school.

We need to take some of the bricks from Foreman Field and sell them as a fund raiser. The sold brinks could be laid in the walkway leading up to the new stadium making the "Monarch Path". It would be a solid way to allow the little guys to help with the fund rising. A dad walking with his son could say, "we bought a couple of these brinks".

I love your idea of the walk using bricks reclaimed from Foreman Field.03-thumbsup

As far as title IX, don't we have ten years to come into full compliance fom when we started adding additional fb schollies.
The golf course is on land unsuitable for building. Even if ODU owned it, nothing of use could be built on top of it.

Not to mention, if we ever get a category 4 or 5 hurricane through the tidewater area (we haven't in over a century or more but it absolutely WILL happen again one day, the last thing we want is our 50+ mil stadium on top of soft sinkable land right near the Elizabeth river.

Think about a 10+ foot storm surge or more + tidal flooding + extreme rainfall near the river/bay.

None of us has ever seen it in our lifetime and hopefully none of us ever will, but it will happen one day and depending on the angle it hits the coast, the flooding up the river would be extreme and unprecedented.

Where we place this stadium needs to take that into consideration or we could be looking at millions more in repairs in the future.

Jmu's stadium flooded, but that was nothing compared to what we would have if a cat 4 or 5 came up the coast amd brought storm surge and devastating rain to an already flood prone area.

Whoever is tasked with building our stadium better damn well take that into account.

All very true. A cat 4 or 5 making landfall in Hampton Roads would cause a catostrophe, even a cat 3 would cause severe down river flooding. We definitely don't need to be building on unstable land.

We'd have far bigger issues than a stadium if a cat 4/5 hit the area.

This. Anything more than a weak 3 and I'll be heading inland a bit. I rode out a 3 in the outer banks and that was my ceiling. Especially having a family now.

When I was single I was all like

Ok but we still shouldn't build a 50 million dollar stadium in an extreme flood zone on a river which connects to the bay which connects to the ocean which can bring huge storm surge.

I'd be much happier if it was kept away from the river.
If the Powhatan Apt complex floods significantly, it's likely that most of the campus will be affected also. Norfolk, and most of the tidewater region lie in a flood plain. I think the river location is probably the best fit, with the exception of a once a century storm.
Harbor Park has been on the same river for +20-years. You just need to be smart about it. Like most of the offices and all the concession stands are at the top of the lower level. They're off the ground 20ft, the restaurant is also off the ground. With the planning that goes into a job like this, I'm certain they'll take storm flooding into account. Most of the campus is on the same floodplain, so we are hosed with a +Cat3 storm.
Absolutely, it'll have to be planned to the 100 yr flood at minimum. It'll be fine. Your homes on the other hand... =]
