Here is an idea of what a stadium could look like in the fields behind Larchmont Elementary, with the school torn down for some more parking. I left Forman field in for a size comparison. [Image: nu4ydeva.jpg]

Thanks for doing that. I thought the size of the land would work from looking at aerial photos. Of course it's all conjecture. A lot depends on where the new Larchmont ES will be built, and whether ODU could get a long term lease for the land.
Looks great! Do you have any idea what the seating capacity would be as drawn? I think 40K would be a great number, with ability to expand to 55K-60K.
If i had to guess i would put it at 40-42k in the picture. Obviously I hacked up Foreman Field to make it, so who knows. haha

Issue: This is an active school. Also should receive pushback from the neighborhood, which includes some powerful and influential people.

I don't think that my neighbors are lightly going to accept their children being bussed out of their neighborhood so ODU can have a new larger stadium for use 6 afternoons/evenings a year. I think we should disabuse ourselves of this notion.

As I said there is already a contract for Larchmaon ES to be replaced. I agree that the neighborhood is not going to forfeit the school being there, that does not necessarily preclule a stadium on that site as well. The school's footprint could be reconfigured more closely to the street, still allowing sufficient greenspace/parking for both. I have no idea if this is what will happen, but I think it's the most sensible option if the stadium is not kept at it's present site.
That WHRO property smack dab in the middle looks like a wart on the project. That needs to go too!
Demo Foreman Field give that land to Larchmont and build a new school there.
I still think my option one is the best... those blocks South of University Village. Most of the land is owned by that business with the man made out of auto parts. If s/he is willing to sell, I think it is a great spot with easy access and traffic management.

Painted, I love your ideas and those mock ups are cool. The biggest problem I see is that moving an elementary school closer to a road like Hampton Blvd would be dangerous, so I don't think the city will go for that. Norfolk also seems to like the idea of moving schools around the original property ala Norview HS.

First thing is to move WHRO. Then focus on the property on the other side of the Ted going toward downtown.
Create a broadcasting school on campus and move WHRO on campus. The WHRO School of Broadcasting and Video Journalism. Claim their land and build a kick ass stadium.

My thought exactly.

That would be awesome. I'm not trying to throw cold water on the idea at all, but it would probably involve a lot of complicated politics to negotiate as WHRO is owned by eighteen school districts in the area. I do love the idea of a partnership with WHRO including a school of broadcasting/journalism at ODU.

I like your option. Would that mean tearing out/filling in W 40th between Hampton and Killam, and then wedging the stadium in between the District and the apartments?

Correct. Perfect location to bring the district into "campus". Also easy access from Colley/Hampton/Colonial/Granby/26th/35th/38th... should help mitigate traffic issues. Obviously land acquisition is the issue. Not sure how much. Perhaps someone with more knowledge of what/who is there, if they would willfully sell, and/or imminent domain or legal process and procedures could chime in?

Just to give an idea of what could fit, I took UNLV's Sam Boyd Stadium and put it where you are suggesting. The map zooms are the same of course.

Sam Boyd seats 36,800, I had to chop a little off the corners but with the east filled in, I think you're looking at 40,000.

And the same thing with UCF's Bright House Networks Stadium, it's a little too large, but seats 45,323

Those look pretty cool and all, but where the heck would everyone park?

Existing garages at the Ted and across the street, existing tailgate lots, and on street through the neighborhoods. Plenty of room to support, but it will require some walking for those with lower or no donations. For instance, walk ups may have to park over near O Sullivans or maybe even as far as Colonial Place and hike it a mile. Of course the garage by McDonalds on the South side of the Ted (will be the same distance to the stadium as the Ted) will be reserved for the VIP donor levels if they want it. Could even probably build a tunnel or bridge from the garage to the stadium.

Out of curiosity, how does the site compare to the existing Foreman site at the same Zoom level?
