Wow, just wow.

I'm about to graduate and was thinking about leaving the area. SO much development / improvements planned. This will only spur more interest into the area. I better apply to some jobs locally. I'm impressed and excited!

ODU planning major Health Sciences Expansion at the Virginia Beach Center
I still don't see why they don't put that sort of stuff on the main campus. The VB center is supposed to be for non-traditional students who have families in VB and cant make it to Norfolk after work. I know theres a real estate problem, but seems eminent domain would actually be appropriate for a facility like this. And it could get rid of some unsafe eyesores at the same time.

It makes sense to have it over in VB.
VB has the corridor under development. The VB campus is MUCH closer to companies and facilities that enrolled students will be able to do research in. I've made a few posts on the topic in the past.

The VB campus is pretty much next door to this.

I'm pretty sure after we all saw the State of the University address I said something to the effect about VB campus becoming a med hub. If not, I sure as hell thought it.

I see both points. I mainly agree with monarx though. This should be in Norfolk. On the main campus. Norfolk General, Norfolk Public Health, CHKD, and EVMS are all right up the street. Now if Virginia Beach is giving us a pile of money to do this there that is a different story. I would also be OK if it is a shot at our "illustrious" governor for all of his support in the past while representing the City of Norfolk in the state Senate.

There is some sense in having this in Virginia Beach though. With the Sentara complex across Princess Anne Road and LifeNet across the street from ODU Virginia Beach, this isn't a bad location. If this is how we back door a medical school with the help of Sentara then much like CUSA it is a means to an end. Still, I would rather have it on the Mothership.

Don't see that happening. They compete with us for nursing students.

Unless we merge with Sentara's school. If EVMS doesn't want to play someone else might want to.
Figured this could have residual impact on ODU, due to the amount of alums I know working there. Stihl is doing an expansion of their American HQ;

Did a tour of the plant 2 months ago for possible job post graduation. It is much larger than had expected. There was talk about wanting to expand/replace other areas of the complex as well, but they are land locked now.

We're lucky to have Stihl locally. Great company.

A little off-topic, but I went by the new child study center and it looks close to being completed. Take a detour next time you're on campus and check it out. Big improvement for that part of campus. And makes me hope they keep stretching towards Colley.

I'd love it if campus could eventually reach Colley. That stretch where U-Pie, Dirty Buffalo, Macks Barge, Cogans, the Wave etc are would be a great little college bar area. It could almost rival the old block with 4400, Tucks, Elbow Room, Kings Head, Battersons etc. That part of town really needs to embrace its ODUness.

North Colley is getting busier and busier each week. Last weekend we drove to go to the new spot, Hanks. I had to park 4 blocks away.

I know folks who live in areas like DC, Charlotte or Richmond may not think that's a big deal but there was no special event and it's a new problem to North Colley.

I want to try out Hanks Filling Station, looks like good food and beer.

Went the day it opened. Food is more expensive than I hoped for, but I found it pretty good. I see that place being packed on game days for those that don't want to pay or deal with the tail gating headaches.

Was told by a reliable source that Three Notch'd is going to open a tasting room in downtown Norfolk. Would be a great addition.

I am personally fine with expanding the VB center, especially if the city of VB chips in money.
I think its just a matter of time before the VB campus wants to spin off, just like we did from W&M. It might be 30-50 years from now, but I think thats VBs endgame. I also don't think that will be good for ODU. Seems to me the best thing ODU could do is try to make those students feel a connection to the ODU brand. Big Blue should be out there handing out tickets to football and basketball games. They should have ODU branding all over the building, ODU flags, signage, banners etc. All kinds of Monarch pride stuff.

Relax. There is just one building right now. Wait for it to actually be a campus and im sure there will be some ODU branding.
