The biggest fly in the plan involving the golf course is making sure they will go along with it. The course will want to be compensated for lost revenue of lost rounds on game day, but the ideas is pretty cool.
I brought the topic of golf course tailgaiting up back in January some people liked the idea but others found problems. I compared it to Michigan and the big house. They have a golf course across the street and everyone goes out there to tailgait. I think it would be awesome!

I'll bring it up to my contacts as well.
Good luck. It's been an uphill battle to get a MatLab course to replace CS 150 (C++/C), which I think would benefit students. As engineering students, we probably won't have to use C++, but there's a whole course called 'Computational Methods' which is supposed to teach you how to use different methods to equate things on a computer. But half the course is just having to teach you MatLab since we've no experience with it beforehand.
With that $750mil gift to ODU, from Siemens the PLM software will be the leader. The school will push Siemens NX which is part of the PLM bundle. NNS and EB are switching over to NX from a dozen different tools. NX is taking the lead in intelligent 3D product modeling for ship & auto and is moving CATIA to the side. Each customer has their own requirements and there will never be one design tool used by everybody. With all the design tools, you can't hire people by the systems they played with in college. You need a min of 1,000 hours to even be half-way proficient.
That's a valid argument also. Each industry has it's niche software. Bentley products still play a huge role in the Gov sector. Have y'all seen IES VE? It's pretty awesome. Sorry for thread jack. Guilty.
No, no keep it up it is like watching a blog version of the Big Bang Theory - sorry guys I couldn't resist
I feel like I'm in Athens and everyone's speaking Greek! From your clueless Political Science/ English major!
I didn't think this was worth its own thread and wasn't sure where to put this, but thought the two commercials were pretty cool;

Wonder how much we spent to get JayZ to star in that commercial?

Thanks, needed a break from reality today. 03-lmfao
New Dining Hall

Found a link to the some renderings of the new dining hall. Looks pretty legit
While this isn't on campus, this development should be good for ODU and I'm sure they had some influence on it happening;

Also of note, Bold Mariner Brewing Company (on Bowdens Ferry in Lamberts Point) opens on Saturday. I'll be there post game, hopefully for a victory brew.

I'm liking this. Everytime I drove down that end of Hampton blvd I felt like that area was full of rotting warehouses. I would love to see what it looks like when it's done

Of all the places I have lived around the country, I honesty can't think of any other place that has such a high concentration of Grocery Markets.
I'm sure other areas exist, but I'm just amazed.

I wonder if this is going to lead to development along Hampton Blvd connecting the school with a more office building / mall situation towards Ghent.

I can easily see a few more towers going up once the new research buildings are done.

Perhaps Monarch Bank or Towne Bank will open up a headquarters type of building and leech off of ODU's business Grads. Or maybe an investment firm near by to get cheap/free labor from the students taking the Stock Market 101 class.
This was an interesting read about the Hampton Blvd plan.

I'm ashamed I have not heard or seen this before.

Thank you for sharing the Mace and Crown link, that lead me to that.

Here's a Google Map outline of the area that is called out in the plan for West Norfolk Market Place. The picture they provide is not very nice.

Nice. I wish it was on the east side of campus, but can't complain. This will be a good thing. Lamberts Point could be on the rise with this.
I keep thinking that the homeowners in Lamberts Point will be squeezed out sooner or later and the city's new rec center ends up with the university
Here's an interesting tidbit from the announcement of the ODU-ECU OOC series:

Quote:ODU has hired a consultant to advise the school how to build a new football stadium to replace the 20,118-seat Foreman Field. The stadium should be open in 2019, when the Pirates make their first trip to Norfolk.

Makes me think they are ready to wrap up the study and they are just fine tuning the size, suites, etc..

My guess for how the next few years play out.

They choose the Powhatan site for the stadium.
-Start construction on the new housing that is planned on the East side of Hampton Blvd. Start Summer 16, Open Fall 17

-Once complete, tear down Powhatan and start stadium Start Fall 17

-Then tear down SB Ballard Stadium and start construction on new housing. Start Spring 18, Open Fall 19

-Once that is complete, tear down Webb Center and start building it's replacement, to minimize the amount of construction going on on 49th at the same time. Start Fall 19, Finish Summer 20
