Does the new replace Webb?

EDIT: looks like it does not. It goes next to the new webb according to the master plan
Koch Hall was slated for a tear down per the Master Plan. Guess it's sticking around a while longer.

The new building calls for "The proposed combination general fund and 9D bond project will build a new 158,462 gsf, multi-story building of standard 40 year construction on a pile-supported slab. "

IIRC the new chemistry building calls for 30 year. Odd.

From the master plan. The old Education building (Now Monarch Hall) remains. So these buildings will find a new location. They just spent a lot of time and money removing asbestos from that building and are starting the build out of the new maker space as well as moving offices and such inside....

HOWEVER:

Description: Consistent with the University’s masterplan, this proposed general fund project is to augment the program space in the existing Health Sciences Building by demolishing the old Education Building and constructing a new 126,154 gsf Health Sciences Building, Phase I, of standard 40-year construction on that site. The new Health Sciences Building will house about 60% of the Universities Health Science programs. As currently envisioned the building program will include:

- Undergraduate and graduate instructional (wet) laboratories supporting multiple disciplines
- Specialized simulation laboratories for instruction within a simulated hospital environment
- Recording suites for use in evaluating student –simulated patient interactions
- A dental facility with examining and treatment rooms along with support spaces
- Physical therapy examination and treatment rooms along with support spaces
- Mediated classrooms
- Computer laboratories
- Meeting and conference rooms
- Faculty offices and dean’s suite

This project is being submitted to align the University’s six-year capital plan with its master plan. In developing the plan, a number of alternatives were considered, including building a 22,000 square foot addition to the existing building or leasing the additional space. The University discarded adding to the building as an option because site constraints foreclose our ability to provide adequate square footage in the long term. Leasing was also discarded because suitable leased space to meet the College’s needs is simply not available. Demolition of the old Education Building will allow new construction of a multi-story Health Sciences Building which will serve the needs of the University, and the Commonwealth, for many years to come.

Well, that plan also had Foreman Field turning into dorms.

This talks about tearing down the old education building. I think monarch hall is a temporary name.

Temporary name... sure. But the engineering department and the STEM department have been planning and sourcing $3-5 Million worth of equipment that is scheduled to be moved into Monarch Hall.

Student clubs are having offices being moved into it as well.

They are pretty much done doing the remodel of everything inside. Spent nearly a year gutting the place. Seems very foolish to spend all that money, time and effort to move everybody back out and tear down the building.

Agreed, my guess is that they put Phase 1 of the new health sciences where the old child study center is across from BAL. The new child study center should be opening up soon right? That way they dont waste the money they put into monarch hall. Then in a few years, Phase 2 of the HS building were go there.

That would makes sense.
But docs in that link say construction starts 2020.

Last time I went by the child center had some windows installed. Still lots to do.
Interior renovations aren't that expensive in the grand scheme. And if it makes shifting things around easier, it's better than letting a building go unused for the years it will take to get the funds and build the new building.

True, but all the student orgs are moving in. Some groups that didn't have offices will gain them now. Lots of equipment will be moving in (That maker space is going to be HUGE). Not many places to put it when it's time to tear down.

One would think that the student orgs would have offices at the new Webb, no? Not sure about the maker space though. But I'm really happy to know they're putting one in. I have taken a couple classes at 757 maker space. It's cool to hear our students will have access to one.

Do we know if that is actually the new design for the Webb Center?
Not thrilled with the style for the new Webb Center, but it is sort of a side/back view. Maybe it will be good. Just make it a beautiful, timeless high quality building that can be the signature focal point of campus. It should be designed to look great in videos, brochures etc as well as a highly functional, inviting place. Love the idea and location for the clock tower. Looks like they're adding a fountain too.

When Dr. Adams announced her plans to get a bigger and better maker space than VT, I gave her Beau's info. Haven't followed up with him though if they are doing some sort of partnership. 757 Maker space is pretty cool.

For student offices, the timeline doesn't really fit. Maybe that is what the interior reno within the webb is for? But that's going to fill up quickly.

If orgs need to move out 2020, where do they go? Not enough space in current Webb, nor has anybody seen any plans for one breaking ground before 2020.

That place is across the street from my mechanic so I have seen it during multiple stages. They stripped that thing down to nothing and then added a second floor. With all the demo work I'm not sure why they didn't just raze it and start from scratch. I think it's been like 2 years since they started.
