When they said fees wouldn't go up, I believe they are referring to the percentage of tuition that goes towards student fees. Each time the tuition has gone up since the move to CUSA was announced, so have student fees.

Im sure Norment can get away with alot since part of the kingdom he rules over includes: all New Kent, King William and King and Queen counties. I guess Norment is a world class farmer or logger.
He's a lawyer.

Yet he voted against the efforts 7 years ago when Del. Surprise surprise. He did not share this concern, when JMU, which has the highest student fees of any University in the state (allocated to athletics) asked for his support and he voted to approve over 130 million in state funding for two projects. He also voted in favor of the $52.5 million expansion of lane stadium. He did not have this concern when he voted in favor of the $131 million funding support for UVA in the construction of JPJ. Seems like a double standard to me. Just call me cynical over Norment's displeasure and continuous arrogant behavior against Old Dominion. He seems to have an agenda.

As always, excellent research work, Oldtimer. A great way to expose this legislator's hypocritical nonsense is to list all these previous actions taken by him and demand an explanation of why ODU should be treated differently. I also don't buy this "save face" argument some are quick to put across to make it seem he didn't mean any of what he said and only jostling for political vantage. He is a through and through total loser and wish I was a registered voter in his district.

Hey Mac.
I noticed that you did not write "Scumbag" lawyer... such a modifier would be redundant.

03-drunk

I know you're not "T-MAC," but still... It's all good.

Wow. This Norment character sounds like a grade A scumbag. I understand if you have principles I dont agree with, but at least be consistent about it. Then again, I guess he is a politician.

Question: what do you call a bus load of lawyers at the bottom of the ocean?
answer: a good start
Slightly off topic, but while we are talking funding...
How can JMU continue to receive it's full allotment of state funds when it's racial statistic is 80-84 % white in any given year?

That is shameful.

I would hazard a guess that the breakdown is virtually reversed within the athletic department.

You and ODUH are not hardly the first students to graduate with debt. Personally, I taught school ( 5,500 a year back then) for debt forgiveness, then paid off the rest of my Pell grant. Every generation incurs debt ( if you choose to go to college). Remember, college is a choice, not some requirement forced on anyone.

I'm sorry, I definitley overreacted and I apologize for that. But I did read your earlier comment (not glance over it) and it seemed that you were being slightly condescending towards ODUH for not wanting student fees raised.

Yes college is still a choice but it's becoming more of a necissity due to how the job market is changing. Student debt has also increased to an all time high and colleges are becoming more and more expensive. I'm sure back then for you it may have the same. But just try to imagine the situation of college students now instead when you were there. Many of us when we began college weren't assuming on having our student fees raised for a football stadium. I believe you on Selig and Broderick saying student fees and tuition will not be raised for the stadium. But a part of me thinks that will change once the preliminary design of the stadium is finished.

I love ODU and the football program, but first and foremost academics to me are the most important. I just don't want tuition costs to drive away potential ODU students that could raise our rankings in academics in the future. I don't like the Norment guy anymore than you all do, but I understand part of the reason of why he worries about students tuition going up. But again I apologize of my earlier comment. No disrespect.

Good post OT 04-cheers. This is nothing but a gaddam conspiracy.
It'd be funny if someone send this to that torment guy.

It is my personal belief that tuition and student fees at ODU are plenty low right now. I really don't want my college to be the WalMart of Education. We have a good thing going and some just want to get in the way.

I get what you're saying but I feel we should keep student rates low. We're getting better and better students on the campus who have great grades and are also money-conscious.

Low rates to me are kind of a deterrant against the rampant crime around ODU. Students are worried about the crime but enjoy the low student tuition compared to other Virginia schools. Basically I think it's the best way for ODU to keep a good attendance rate on campus.

Not sure I'm seeing the correlation here.

Not sure I'm seeing the correlation here.

Personally I think some people choose to not go to ODU due to the crime rate around the area. The low tuition rate though on the other hand is excellent for the education that ODU brings forth.

To me I feel that the tuition here is a big enough reason for many students to come to ODU regardless of the crime.

Just got an email today, a student was killed near the campus due to aggravated assault. RIP Paul Johnson.
Can't blame ODU really for the crime around the area but people put the blame on them unforunatley.

The Norfolk Police Department, warrants have been secured charging two individuals in this incident.

David William Grimm Jr., 21, will be charged with 2nd degree murder.
Christopher Chase Johnson, 20, will be charged with misdemeanor assault.
Both Grimm and Christopher Johnson are on the run.
So sad to hear that Mr. Johnson passed away. RIP

I'm glad that they have suspects. It's shameful for anyone to think that attacking someone and assaulting them, regardless of the outcome, is in any way acceptable. I hope that they get caught and if guilty I'd want the book thrown at them. I'm not sure what ODU can do to prevent this, but the city needs to take a role in the safety of its citizens in these areas.
I get the sense that local thuggery wasn't the cause. I think it may have been student-on-student violence.

I didn't mean to implicate the local thugs in this, but last weekend a student was shot by locals. Safety at and around ODU is clearly a concern and is one of the things holding this school back.
Until they get the crime situation under control, ODU will likely not crack the top tier. We're so close right now, but we need better 5 year grad rates, better student teacher ratios, and most importantly, better peer reviews. Until the crime situation is solved we wont improve the number of high GPA freshman and we wont get the peer reviews improved. Its a shame the darn ghetto holds us back and the city and admin seem to have no clue what to do about it.
