PhDs are rarely paid for by the student. At least where I work. In fact most of the students have some type of work study program so they get paid while in the program.

I am not a PhD, but the experience I've been told (I have masters and inquired) was that it takes 4-5 years of being whoever is above you's ***** and teaching lower level classes for very little pay.

Isn't that if the school is funding the PhD? Granted some programs i.e. physics have you do lots of research and the prof gets all the credit. But say ODU's PHD or DEng of Engineering Management / Systems Engineering. I don't recall hearing any of their students being a professors *****, UNLESS they were earning the degree on the schools dime.

Not when I asked. Student was footing the bill.

I would donate at least $100M to ODU for a new stadium

Damn. I guess it depends on the program then.
I was just in the Eng Sys building the other day asking about the D. Eng program. I'll ask about this specifically next time I talk to my advisor.
President Broderick just announced the largest capital campaign in school history, $200 million;

Cashout is 443 million.... your generous!
"in Broderick's nine years as president, ODU has received more than $500 million in capital improvement funds from the state, which was used to build a new education building, dining hall and dormitories and will build more dormitories and chemistry and life sciences buildings."

Wow that's more than I thought.

Quite impressive. I'm glad to see the launch of this capital campaign too. Also glad to see the expansion of health related programs, but bummed to see them based at the VB extension. Programs being duplicated at satellite campuses makes sense for place bound students, but there should never be an instance where an on campus student has to leave campus to take a class 20 miles away. What if they don't have a car? The whole point of living on campus is so you don't have to commute.

A few other interesting things of note from the Broderick's address.

$40 Million of the campaign will be used for the football stadium. My understanding was we were keeping the cost at a modest $55 million and only building the tiny version to stay within that budget. So does this mean the $40 million goes towards Phase 2, or that we are only financing $15 million for phase one? I would think naming rights alone could finance $15 million giving us a stadium free and clear for phase one, or a great start on phase 2.

The article now calls for 16,000+ chair back seats in a 22,000+ seat stadium. Is that because the end zone bleachers remain, or are they considering keeping some bleachers in the rebuild?

Wood hopes to grow the athletics endowment up to $200 million. That would pay for all of our scholarships. It currently is around $29 million, so we have LONG way to go to reach that goal.

The endzone bleachers wont be touched until phase 2. As I understood the article, this campaign will only be for phase 1.
I would be shocked if Broderick or Selig are even considering funds that will be necessary for Phase II. $20m of sweat equity is designed to get those comfortable chair backs in place for all of us existing donors.

More seats and brighter lights for our recruits will just have to wait. Gotta keep those priorities in line.

Exactly.

http://wewill.northwestern.edu/s/1479/28...&pgid=7959

Most of the schools that have been around since the earth cooled have multi-billion dollar endowments. The wealthy want to give their money to prestigious schools that already have billions. Not to mention that all that money generates lots of interest from investments, so it grows itself. Will take another 50-100 years for ODU's endowment to get this large.
I think for only being around for just over 70 years ODU is doing fine in terms of fundraising and alumni giving. Considering the state holds us back in terms of funding and support, and we don't have a law school or medical school to pump out wealthy graduates, ODU should be proud of its endowment. It just needs to continue to improve. Hopefully investing $160 million in infrastructure, research, scholarships and faculty will help get more top academically gifted students to ODU. They graduate and have successful careers, earn tons of money and give back. Its a cycle. Maybe this campaign can help supercharge our growth and reputation again and get us back in line with the GMUs and JMUs in terms of academic reputation. If that happens, in another 100 years maybe we do kick off a $1Billion dollar campaign.

Here is how UTSA did. I loved their "Tier One" campaign, and would love to see ODU do something similar. ODUs capital campaign is even more aspirational than UTSAs was, and I expect ODU to meet its goal. You don't generally launch these things publicly until you have 60-70% or more of the money raised already.

Oops. So we finance $35 million for the stadium. Still not bad. And maybe I'm crazy, but Im still hopeful one of the firms making stadium proposals can come in with a plan to redo the end zone and add suites within the $55 million budget. The firms know they're in competition with one another to get the job, so they need to propose something impressive.

It would be nice to get both phases done from the jump. Our admin would be wary of expanding and adding that much supply that quickly, though.

Yeah, I think they care more about the sellout streak than capacity. Maybe they are justified in that decision - perhaps a sellout crowd is a better sell to recruits than stadium size. Either way, seems like they prefer taking smaller steps forward at this point.

It would and they will. I don't think leaving the endzone bleachers or the second deck on the East side until Phase II is world ending. Getting some more suites in would be very helpful in Phase I if for no other reason than the revenue. So would replacing the videoboard with something everyone can see. Still, as long as it stays 100% chair backs I'm all good.

I agree about holding off on the second deck for the east side. That can certainly wait, but the end zone, scoreboard and additional suites are needed ASAP, not 40 years from now.
