He committed to Illinois state. For some reason we cooled on him earlier this week. I'd guess we asked him to go to sunrise for a year and he didn't want to

If he is looking to start without earning it, then he picked the right school.

tenn tech is a good rpi game...should be top 150 rpi

south dakota state, is a top 40 rpi team who's star player just announced he will be returning and wont enter the draft

hardaway has proclaimed memphis will be in the tourney next year, and will be in the mix for the conference title....he is putting his money where his mouth is with the schedule...if everything he says is true...memphis will have the schedule to be in the tourney
TBF, Penny didn’t set this one up...was in the works before he was coach

Regardless of who set it up, it’s nice to be in a conference where other teams attempt to schedule well.

Yeah I think we do need some scheduling guidelines with punishments just to keep people on the straight and narrow and avoided Lebo schedules.

In fairness though in most cases the programs have scheduled well. Tulane's has steadily got better as they've built up. I expect USF to follow along and am sure ECU will be upgrading their schedule as well.

the ones that kill me are the schools that aren't even a clickable link when you check ESPN. Like, where did you find these people?

Dooley said most of this years schedule was already done and handed to him but that he will try to have five P5 teams a year on the schedule each year. He said if that wasn't possible he would substitute A10 or High RPI teams, and referenced teams he played at FGCU like Rhode Island and Middle Tennessee State.

I was actually referring back to our years in the valley of mediocrity, where many teams just scheduled as many cupcakes as they could and still lost regularly, turning into complete RPI anchors.
MVC available for a Challenge after next season! Get it done Aresco!

We need a challange with someone just for the extra attention the conference gets as a whole at those. They tend to examine the strength top to bottom when talking about individual match ups in those.

Pretty sure the PAC-12 is challenge-less right now. They probably think they’re too good for an AAC challenge but their current TV exposure sucks and they could use some more featured games.

When Houston hired Clyde Drexler, we sold out Hofheinz his first year on a season ticket basis.

He also started recruiting like gangbusters, signing several local studs.

A lot of good it did . . .

Dexler’s experience is a repeated theme from skeptics about Penny’s hire. It has merit, but hiring any new coach willing to work at Memphis involves risk of failure. The goal is to weigh risk and reward and act accordingly.

Penny is worth the risk. He has energized Tiger fans and Memphians through savvy PR and very positive early recruiting results. In due time, Penny’s performance will be evaluated. Meanwhile, Tiger fans have good cause for optimism.

The Drexler comparison is weak. He went straight from the NBA one year to coaching Houston a few months later. Penny has had several years as a coach compiling some of the best HS and AAU programs in the nation. Teams he has recruited to and coached and obviously loves doing so.

Drexler had no clue what he was getting into and was horrible. He admits he wanted to quit from day 1: Drexler acknowledged he has thought about leaving almost since he started coaching almost immediately after his retirement from the NBA.

"Because of the time that it takes in the coaching profession, in the first week I was thinking, `Boy, this is going to be a little bit more difficult than I thought'," Drexler said. "But in an effort to try to help out and get it back, I hung in there, stuck with it and did as well as I could.”

While Houston’s recruiting did improve, its not on the same level as what Memphis is experiencing under Penny with potential recruits. In 3 weeks, he compiled a near top 25 class and has Memphis on several 5 Star lists for 19.

“Selling out season tickets” isn’t that impressive at 4,500 tickets sold.

The biggest issue and difference between the 2 is that Penny knows he loves coaching and has already experienced the top at every level he’s coached. Drexler went from NBA player to underpaid coach at what was an under funded program. Penny takes over a program with facilities that rival the best in the nation, having coached some of the top prospects in the nation, and a team with a decent returning core. He may fail, but I wouldn’t bet on it.
I'm willing to bet Penny wins more games overall and more conference games this season than Clyde Drexler won in his 2 season(19 wins and 7 conference wins).

No offense but some of these Clyde Drexler comments come across like bitter exes that think anyone that dates a pretty girl will end up heart broken and in debt like they did07-coffee307-coffee3
Drexler was able to lure prospects with these sweet shoes. It's amazing how these are still hot today!
