So a guy MAYBE won't be able to play in a bowl game their true freshman year (when they would probably redshirt anyway)? How exactly is that an advantage? How does that factor into the next four years of their career?

What I think I heard him say was they were using that against us last year, but wasn't as much of a factor this year.

Opponents just grasping for straws IMO. After this year we can just point to rankings and scoreboard in many cases.
Gotcha. Wasn't sure which year he was referencing and it was many beers ago!
Speaking of long snappers, you can make a long career of that specialty in the NFL.

JMU alum Ed Perry did exactly that from around 1997-2005. Originally drafted as a TE in the 6th round by Miami, after his first few years in the NFL Ed played only as a dedicated long snapper, finishing his career in 2005 with Kansas City.

Ed’s also the answer to a trivia question: Who was the last active player to catch a TD pass from Dan Marino?

A good friend of mine played at Cal with Dave Binn. A happy-go-lucky surfer that spent 17 seasons with the Chargers. Binn was one of many of Pam Anderson's "friends" for a few years.

17 years as a long snapper! That has to be some kind of record. 04-cheers

Nice article!
I didn't realize long snappers were rated in the recruiting circles. Learn something new every day!
We just got a verbal from a 5 star over two other "big name" in state schools, and it seems like folks barely noticed. In the past, all people on this thread chattered about was stars and other offers.

Sure, LS isn't a sexy position like QB, but we've got a player at QB now performing like a top 5/10 guy.

As long as the roster doesn't get decimated offseason, we're going to be in very very good shape. And it feels like this could snowball if we break into the top 25 soon.

Not sure he is technically a 5 star as that is about 30 players total in each class, but he is the 4th ranked long snapper and will play in the Under Armor All-America game.

Yeah I don't see him on 247, rivals, or espn, so I don't understand the stars at all in this case.

It seems like specialties like this are through a service Kohl's.

Yep so LS, kickers, and punters are rated through Kohl’s, much different than 247, Rivals, ESPN, or On3.

For reference I believe our current kicker Camden Wise was rated 5 or 4.5 stars on there.
Kohl’s is a camp that people pay money to attend so of course they’ll crank out the accolades to promote their paying customers which leads to inflated ratings. Seems they have 70 snappers rated 4.5* and above which seems a bit much, but our guy is currently sitting at 4th so that is a bit more reassuring. For kickers they have 50 rated at 5* and wayyyyy too many 4.5* to count, punters 18 with 5* and again wayyyyy too many 4.5* that their count stops at 100.

Agreed was going to say the same, but if you go back and look at their ratings of kickers I think there is value in them at the top. For instance you will see guys like Cade York rated in top few kickers coming out of HS and he is now in NFL so there is something to the ratings.
Are long snappers typically on scholarship? I don't know if the situation has changed, but I have some past recollection that the K/P/LS were typically not on scholarship (at least in their early years) unless they are truly elite.

The only possible change is JMU’s reclassification from FCS to FBS level play.

As a general rule all players at the FBS level are on full scholarship (up to 85 players, the maximum number allowed by the NCAA at the FBS level of competition). I don’t believe any individual who actually suits up and plays in a FBS game would do so without a scholarship.

Practice players (those individuals on the team (#s 86-105, the maximum of players allowed on a team by the NCAA) do not have scholarships.

Honestly, kickers and snappers are so important to a team’s special team success why the heck wouldn’t they be on scholarship? A single bad snap on a punt, extra-point or FG attempt would potentially cost you the game.

Also, do you think the punting and long snapping “academies” are running their businesses out of the goodness of their hearts? The influx of Australian punters is a clue that college scholarships in the U.S. are in play. I’m confident in saying JMU’s current long snappers and kickers are all receiving full scholarships.

Many walk-ons play without scholarships, most are eventually rewarded with one but it's no guarantee. Kickers and snappers are also often w/o any scholarship; even at the P5 teams try to cut corners on scholarships to specialists so they could sign their 5th 5* RB of the class. I'd also guess we'd be able to pull a higher ranked recruit away from the P5 programs by offering a scholarship over a PWO slot. Matter of fact that link to Kohl's shows the recruits and their offers (* DESIGNATES PREFERRED WALK-ON STATUS), even the #2 long snapper recruit (and others) only has PWO offers thus far.
Whether or not a kicker is on scholarship is typically on a team-by-team basis. Take Rodrigo Blankenship, or “Hot Rod”. Kirby Smart put him on scholarship his redshirt sophomore year for the 2017 season after he had an SEC All-Freshman performance the year prior . A lot of the big schools have done videos over the years surprising kickers, punters, etc. by telling them they are on scholarship.

I’m sure now as BYU, the U, and others who have said they would pay walk-ons, more and more ST players will probably stay in walk-on status.
Speaking of Walk-ons. Chad Powers!
