I just think it is dumb pokemonization of it all, where they just want to 'collect' as many offers/acceptance letters as possible like it is some badge of honor no matter the quality or actual interest.

I'm much more interested in the kid who says "I'm grateful (or blessed) to receive an offer from JMU (or even UJM)" than the one that says, "I just got my 13th offer from JMU!"

The even dumber thing, IMO, is that I've been told some have to do this to catch the attention of the morons at On3 and 247 so they can get stars and get more publicity. This is the idiocy that is these recruiting sites. They give the kid from GA that is 6'4" and 260 and can run a 4.5 4 or 5 stars and have zero clue what to do after that so they just sit and watch social media and see who is getting offers. As if any Joe Blow wouldn't know that a kid that is that big and great of an athlete is probably going to be highly sought over.

And it used to be once when a kid got the offer or twice, when he got the offer and then when they commit. Now it’s a constant stroking of the ego with the offers, commits, de-commits, commit again, then into the portal and repeat that same process all over again each time. It’s the constant feeling of being recruited and even re-recruited by the school you’re already at; now multiply this for some guys that are now going on their 3rd or 4th college program.

This whole announcing of offers also helps the lazy programs that don’t put the work in but see a peer made an offer so if this recruit is good enough for State U then let’s throw our own offer at him.
There’s some recruits on campus and I saw coach Daniels already teasing, so I’m guess we’ll have a couple more commits before the weekend is over. Hopefully next weekend we get some early commits out of the class of 25 as well.
An offer made to a grad transfer offensive linemen from Campbell with some underwhelming offers.

There are numerous differences between what we had in November and what we now have besides coaching.

Other than Ponds (off the top of my head), it does not seem like we have a lot of younger proven talent. Seems like 90% of our talent is in the final year of eligibility.

While it is hard to maintain building blocks in the NIL/Portal era, it seems like we will have pretty different teams 2023 versus 2024 versus 2025.
Saw we got another commitment coming for this 24 recruit:

Sahir West
LB
6'3" 220 lbs.
Baltimore, MD

Good sized LB and looks like he’s from Atkins’ alma mater.

Based on Twitter looks like Allen’s IU staff offered him along with UMD. We had him on campus last year for a visit.

This is what I like to see.

We were getting a lot of these last fall.

How is it in any way not a badge of honor?

This is some big time old man yells at cloud energy here. I hope these 16 and 17 year olds understand the way they’re announcing their scholarship offers is affecting JMaddy’s interest in them.

247 shows him with a few FCS offers and ODU being the only FBS prior to his HC signing (link).
I know his coach well, good kid, and a big framed one with room to fill out.
Inbound!

Not sure why but the X isn’t showing, but he committed today.

I'm not concerned, he filled-out his frame and transitioned from TE to an OT. Also, Holy Cross has identified and developed o-line talent pretty well the past few years, so it's good that HCBC brought along their o-line coach. Of their 5 starters, one got invited to the NFL Combine and 3 hit the portal, JMU got 1, Michigan State 1, and Duke the other. He got interest, but obviously not offered, from hometown Penn State and also Pitt, ODU offered on top of the FCS programs.

Thankfully we have a lot of OL on the roster so we don't necessarily need him this season. Perhaps redshirt him and give him a year to bulk up more.

Yeah, between what we have coming back and what we got in the portal, we have enough depth that a couple players that previously started in college will be backing up.
I do wonder how hard it's going to be to redshirt and still hold on to talent moving forward. We saw what just happened with Ibrahim Barry (though we've also yet to see how that specific case will have played out).

I think if you have the talent you'll see the field early. With him I think he might be a tweener that is too slow for WR and maybe not strong enough of a blocker to be a TE. Maybe in the right system he can create matchup problems and have success. He had all of these offers in high school but ended up at JMU, then hit the portal and last I checked didn't have a landing spot. If he was a hidden gem he'd be out in Bloomington right now.

I don't think Redshirting will not be as big an issue in the portal era.

The double negative is an interesting way to say you think it will be a big issue.

I believe it will be case by case, not all players are ready to see the field and some need the extra year to develop. Others with talent will be eager to play immediately. The goal for most will still be to develop into a pro caliber player, if they can. That redshirt year can be beneficial.

Practically speaking, from a team perspective, the answer is the best players earn their game time. If a true freshman beats out a senior, so be it, though that will be unusual. BC seems to be a coach that believes in competition in practice, and will have competition for every position.
There were a few players that dressed and maybe even traveled, but they ended up redshirting. Riley Robell is one example, he dressed and even when d-line depth became an issue they still kept him sidelined to preserve that extra year, but they would’ve broken glass in case of emergency. And then there’s a much bigger group that didn’t dress or travel on gameday and we’re never going to see the field in 2023, Barry being one of them. I’m guessing he’s not leaving us for a P5 or even G5 and wouldn’t be surprised to see him at a place like Towson.

I thought Barry already transferred out and went to a B1G school, no?
