So, when a player is forced to leave the team to keep his scholly, does that give the coach another scholly to use? If so, what prevents the coach from bringing in 200 players, seeing which ones are best, and forcing the bottom 100-and-whatever to leave the team but keep the scholly?

(05-12-2023 10:08 AM)jmu98 Wrote: [ -> ]Let's also be very clear here there is a good chance many of these guys did not enter the portal by choice and were forced into it. The NCAA rules currently mandate that the school has to honor scholarship, but if these guys want to continue to play the sport they love they are forced to transfer even without great options. In the Colorado situation there were actually 4 guys who were essentially asked to to transfer who decided to stay at CU, retain their scholarships, but no longer be on the football team.

Colorado/Sanders are clearly trying to clean house, and replace as many players as possible. They are pushing the boundaries on that. If it works, expect to see the same approach used elsewhere.

What we are seeing are possibly unintended consequences of the portal. "Possibly" because maybe this is what some of the P5 wants.

The portal benefits a few highly desired players, but also could end up breaking the traditional "student athlete" model, where the players could be assured of staying 4 years to complete their degree at the school of their choice. Now they can be essentially "fired" if a school wants to chase replacements.

All this benefits "elite" players and also "power" schools, but I am not convinced it is a positive for the average student athlete.

Once again NCAA rules now mandate that they must honor scholarship, but that does not mean they have to be retained on the team. Not that this is a good thing but at least the NCAA has recognized the need to make them honor scholarships. That said most of these guys/ladies came to play a sport and are going to transfer in order to play and that is where the issues really lie. Schools can now miss on a kid and force him into the portal where in the old days they had to live with their choices, though some schools would go with the medical retirement route to free up the scholly.
Scholarships were always 1 year deals that had to be renewed, not a guaranteed free ride for 4-5 years. Kids were always recruited over and nudged along, most when reaching that point had already lost the desire. I played with quite a few guys that quit and kissed that scholarship goodbye, others stayed around helping out in any capacity (filming practice etc.) to keep the scholarship.

The “Houston Nutt rule” did (until the portal because made it obsolete) he liked to bring in almost 40 new recruits then weed them out and/or squirrel them away at a JUCO to go back and get later. You’re supposed to only grab 25 signees, which even with 25 a year and 5 classes add up together you can’t get over 85 total. A whole lot of players get squeezed out in that situation. And say he signed 38, that’s 13 players that would fall down to those below, adding other schools that over recruited and you have a whole lot of hoarding by these P5s.

Also Purple, funny as you mention that as the Pitt Panthers did exactly that back in the early 70s. They brought in upwards of 100 freshman and threw them out there to weed out the keepers. A couple humongous recruiting classes with guys like Tony Dorsett and Matt Cavanaugh in there and they were went from a bad program to winning the nation title in 1976. I had an old coach that played on that title team, he said it was nuts.

6’4” OL transfer from Louisville. Was a redshirt freshman last season.

So what’s our best guess/biggest need? Does Mr. Gunn play inside on the DL, or get slotted in as an OG?

I like the signing. Had some very solid offers out of HS. Good size and lots of eligibility left. Versatile if we needed him to be.
We are loaded on the OL. I would love to see him get a shot on the DL. He has experience there and excelled. Imagine the look on an opposing quarterback's face seeing that locomotive incoming at full steam. 04-jawdrop

I dont think we can have enough quality depth on the OL. I think coaches keep him there and work him into the rotation. Who knows, kid may even crack the starting lineup this year

After 3 seasons, he has 1 reception, which was in their 5 passing TD 53-29 shootout with CCU. Looks like he only played in 3 games in 2022 (one is Sep, one in Nov, bowl game in Dec), but I'm not seeing anything about an injury so wondering if the plan going into the season was to redshirt or it naturally happened.

EDIT: Listened to his interview with Dave Riggert and it sounds like he was injured for 2022 season.

One reception in 3 years from a peer team. Not overly excited......

Likely did not have much of a future with ECU.

Taji Hudson was absolutely going to be in WR rotation this year. It was a surprise when he entered the portal since he paid his dues and was about to get his shot this coming season. Losing him hurts and we had to hit the portal to replace him.

Interesting. Thanks for the insight. Is Taji a PWO?
Mullen was Indiana's seventh-highest recruit in program history, a consensus four-star recruit and the No. 254 player in the class of 2022 out of Coconut Creek High School in Florida, according to 247Sports
Well that's awesome. But like...how did we get him???
Addressing potential weaknesses with solid OL, WR, and now CB transfers. We may be dangerous this year if QB play is up to par

His brother Tiawan also played at Indiana (2020 1st team All American) and is signed with the Chargers while other brother Trayvon (40th pick overall in 2019) plays for the Ravens, so hopefully he’s the 3rd CB in the family to excel in college. Also, his cousin is some guy named Lamar Jackson who now has the cheddar to get that Montpelier Collective going. 04-cheers
2022: Redshirted the 2022 season ... special teams scout team player of the week against Western Kentucky (9/17) ... co-defensive scout team player of the week at Rutgers (10/22).

Looks like he did not get a lot of action last year. It is a wonder how he ended up at JMU. Played college at Indiana, and High School in Fla.

I love the addition. Wonder if this is one of those recruits that changes his mind before he plays a down for us........

I get the pessimism but it would have to happen relatively quick. Maybe he wants to see Lamar's games on Sundays. I hope this sticks because he seems like a legit prospect in a room that is young but talented.
