Arledge played for us one year, avg 9 points and 5 boards. I would take another player like him in a heartbeat next year.

Those two players not being here next year open up a lot of possibilities for us. It hurts not having them this year though.

I would have loved to have seen what Painter could have been had he come to ODU first and not gone to NC State. It was obvious early in his one season, he was raw and poorly conditioned, and even during Blaine's worst year, he really developed. 4 (or possibly 5) years under Blaine could have made him a whole different player. I felt badly that he spent his senior year going through that, though.

McClinton is still in school at ODU.

Yeah I thought the plan was for him to apply for a medical RS.
Sorry if I confused anyone...McClinton is in school and getting his degree BUT his eligibility is used up. He will not play for ODU or anyone else next year. There will be no medical redshirt. His career is over.

So blew.......as someone who clearly has an ear into the program.......do you think we are anywhere near landing an actual impact big man next year?

If we lose Stith and have to start porter and carver next year with little behind them it will be mean yet another step backwards. What say you?
As far as landing one I have no idea....I do know we are in the hunt for 2...one is from Finland. If we don't land one of these I am sure we will go grad transfer or juco route. If all we have is Porter and Carver I would agree it will be a step backwards. You should remember that counting this year and next year we have signed 5 three star recruits...I can't remember ODU ever accomplishing that before. That having been said I think we will get a big. Whether he will be an impact player only time will tell.

Ehhh kah was a 4 star and I don't believe caver had any so I take all of that with a major grain of salt.
If our whole team is defense oriented then why do we have such trouble getting big men? Defense starts with controlling the post and rebounding.

We have just signed three promising big men. Two of them sound like they can help right away and one will prep like Carver did. It sounds like two slots are available still, a freshman and or a Juco,d1 transfer or grad transfer would all work out almost perfectly. Assuming they are good. Recruiting is going well IMO.

The rating system for kids is not necessarily used to look back on players and determine how they turn out in college. The system is used more as a gauge as to how heavily they are being recruited. We have had many 2 star recruits... Some good some bad...A 2 star generally means that player is not being recruited by as many schools as the 3 and 4 star guys. By us landing players that are being recruited harder and by more schools shows we are heading in the right direction and the coaching staff is improving their methods of recruiting. So to answer your question if we are near landing an impact big man my answer is yes. We are getting better at recruiting . We have a solid set of recruits coming in therefore we are more attractive to a big man.I think we will but only time will tell.

Because there aren't a ton of them available and we haven't been in a position to offer immediate playing time. Now that we have immediate playing time to dangle we have signed 3. I also think this staff's idea of a 4 is harder to find. Many programs would make guys like Talley a 4.

What I consider a big. The only guy on this list is Porter..Pervier was but didn't play enough to matter. As far as Ekipke,Reece or Vaughan they are not what I would call big men.The thruth is they are all 6ft7 at the most. When we talk about big men I am talking 6ft8 to 7ft.And guys weighing 220 at the least. We need a stud in the middle.I will admit Brandon fit the role last night but against stiff competition I haven't seen him be able to finish.
I feel somewhat similar to what you have stated blewbyu. In defense of Giles, I believe that he was including the power forwards on his list of 'bigs' and as such I am OK with some of the others he mentioned if that is what he was intending. Carver, Vassor, Taylor and Brandan are among those players, although some if not all of them have at one time or another have played center for ODU. I don't like the freshman from Greece listed as a big. He looks small even compared to some of our other guys that play inside.

Like you, I don't really consider a 6'-7" guy to be a 'big' when talking the center position for ODU so long as they are still playing a power style of basketball. The more Jones incorporates a zone into his defensive scheme the more it helps if he is going to be smaller inside though.

I don't want to prejudge any of the incoming freshmen big guys till I have had a chance to see them. I know that one is listed at 6'-9", and I have seen the guy from Georgia listed from 6'-6" to 6'-8" and around 220 lbs as of his junior year of high school. Who knows his real height or what he will look like in a couple more years at ODU?

All that said .... I really do hope that Jones is able to land the big guy to anchor the center spot that he is still seeking for next season. To me it will go a long way in determining their success either next year (if a transfer comes) or in the years ahead (if a true freshman signs), and depending on the situation, potentially for both next year and the years ahead.
I would much rather have a colson (6-5) type player that can score everywhere than a big goof center. If they get a center, i hope its someone that can move. We are finally starting to play a little more uptempo and have the team to do it, no need to slow it down now.
I'll take a 6'6" to 6'9" guy who rebounds well, blocks shots, defends well, and can get out and run. I have absolutely no problem with a Richard Ross type "center" with our current roster.

I'm pretty sure that no one wants a "big goof center" as their next recruit. That sounds like Pervier.

We are talking more along the lines of Washington, West, Hodge, Laughton, Lee, and Hassell as what we are hoping for. As for the tempo ... yes, I agree. I haven't seen the tempo slow down because Porter has been in the game and he is our biggest player and along the lines of what we are hoping to recruit. It is nice to have that shot blocker as the last line of defense too.

It's fine that you would rather get a 6'-5" player instead. Everybody's favorite ice cream isn't vanilla.
Another Porter? That would be just sweet! Should be interesting. Hopefully an experience player and a freshman or 3 years eligible type like Porter was, would work out well with spacing graduating classes it seems to me. But what do I know. I would take the best available talent.
I'd love to land another Porter; however, I'm realistic. Porters don't fall to teams at our level very often. You don't see athletic 6'11" guys on many mid-majors. You typically see 6'11" oafs or 6'7" to 6'9" athletic guys on mid-majors.
I'd more happy with a 6'7" George Evans type guy than a 7'0 Anton Larson type. Height is important, but its not everything.
I'd prefer not to settle for a 6'-7" center. We didn't in the past.
