They are, in a word, haunting.

This is an excellent CD. It comes out 9/25

I love Sufjan Steven's Come on Feel the Illinoise album. It's one of those records that built up for me. I liked a few songs on it at first but the rest didn't do it for me. The second time I listened, I was blown away. I don't know where my head was the first time around. Maybe I wasn't ready for it. Unfortunately, I don't really know too much off any of his other records. What's the next step?

I find his lyrics to be downright amazing. Sometimes though, I just caught up in the mood and sing along without even noticing the lyrics at all. For instance, "Casimir Pulaski Day is about a childhood crush dying of cancer of the bone. I didn't realize that, until I saw him play and he talked about the song prior (even though it's clear as day when I hear it now, I hear it now, and want to cry). My Brightest Diamond's presence on a number of tracks is just simply haunting, you just go along with the song, slowly nodding your head. It's brilliant. To this day, I'm not quite sure what "Chicago" is about. Is it some Christian metaphor? I heard it was about a friend's suicide and him being powerless to stop it, but I can't see that in those words.

Anywhoos, I recommend checking out Seven Swans and the Michigan album. Seven Swans is kick ass. Michigan isn't as good as Illinois, but it's still worth a listen if you're a Suf fan. I've heard Rhode Island or Oregon on the agenda next.
Since it just came out on tuesday, haven't taken it out of my cd player

You can say that again . . . oh wait, we were talking about records, not states.

Seriously, thanks for the reviews/recs, etc. I'll check those out.
Bham, I agree with Kanye, there's not much I wouldn't do for a "Blonde Dyke." That's a genious lyric.
yeah, that record's crazy. i was definitely happy to give best buy my $10.
Ryan Adams - Easy Tiger Alternates (from the Fuel Blog)
Ryan Adams - The Suicide Handbook

i did expect some more monologues like with Dropout and Registration, so I am kinda disappointed, those were great. alas here are some of the songs i like from this record

Drunk and Hot Girls f/ Mos Def: funny as hell

Good Morning: nice one to open up with, sets the tone for the whole album

Good Life f/ T Pain: will be the next single i'm sure, kind of infectious

Big Brother: insight to his role early at Roc-a-fella

Can't Tell Me Nothing: "If the Devil wear Prada / Adam Eve wear nada / I'm in between but way more fresher"
i can't believe you like "drunk and hot girls." IMO that's the one misstep on the whole record.

Where'd you get these? Your take?

Yeah, I'm quoting myself.

So, I was listening to Ike Reilly's "When Irish Eyes are Burning," from his most recent record, and I came across a somewhat related lyric.

I went to see the Violent Fems with my friend John and his girl friend,
but right before the show began, he mixed it up with a girl named Tank.
Now, I believe Tank was Lesbian, and somebody cracks now lez be friends.

Maybe I'm the only one who finds it interesting, but I thought I'd post it anyway.
On the heals of seeing that comercial with the Flaming Lips song, I decided to give At War With the Mystics another listen. When I first heard it last year, there was some really cool stuff on there, but overall it just didn't resonate with me. Other than "Yeah, Yeah, Yeah Song," which I use to test out sound systems at work, I haven't really listened to any of it since that first listen. Turns out, I like it much better this time around. It's a pretty cool record. It doesn't jump to the top of the list or anything like that, but I certainly appreciate it more than I did.

In conjunction, I found this Flaming Lips cover of Elvis Presley's "Suspicious Minds"

Uhhmm, yeah. The title alone sounds worth listening to.
Lush, look for a PM soon.

Thanks to Blah, I just listened to Pearl Jam - Unplugged 2003. I didn't even know this show exhisted. It's fantastic. It really captures something from the 1999-2003 era of PJ...pretty much up until they put out that clunker Riot Act.
Thanks dyno!!!

I picket these up at record shops in Cincy and Bloomington

Bat for Lashes- Fur & Gold- friggin amazing. one of the best albums of my year.
Architecture in Helsinki- Places like This- hey not bad. a lot better after you get past Cameron Bird's at first, obnoxious vocals. good listen.
Ra Ra Riot EP- haven't listened to it yet, but I saw these guys and gals a few months ago. i'm sure it's great
Los Camepesinos EP- friggin amazing. We throw parties, you throw knives is one of the best songs of the year.
New Porn- Challangers- Best cd of '07
National- Alligator- finally got around to picking this up. Effin' awesome. I've heard most of the album via their shows I checked out. Better than Boxer, maybe.
Animal Collective- Strawberry Jam- I agree that it's probably their most accessible release as of yet. Less chaotic and noise (if you will), more melodious.

Boxer is a contender for album of the year for me...so good

And stupid me didnt get tickets for their Chicago show, which was last nite.
The Boxer is def top 10 for me. Too bad you missed the show. I heard the Chicago show was great. I've seen 'em twice and they def do put on a great show, lots of energy. Matt's mom was in attendance at their last Cincinnati show. She was pretty animated. Matt's a great great frontman. They're coming back in town this week, but I cannot attend.
