A few weeks back (before the start of official practice) I was given a tour of the new basketball practice facility. As I was leaving via the upstairs balcony (aka coach hallway) we had 2 players (new guys to me) taking shots from the corners, one at each end of the main court. They had a constant ball feed and shot and shot. They both never missed, swish, swish, swish, and so on. I really have not witnessed a shooting exhibition like that since Ricky Michaelson. I know they each made at least a dozen, I actually think more before any miss. Then they went to the opposite corner and did it again. I asked the person giving me the tour if this was typical and he said, "all day every day." I must say I left feeling pretty good. I know some of you will say no defense, no pressure, and other valid points but I say they were/are both shooters. I am maintaining hope this season may be a pleasant surprise. We are due and we the loyal faithful deserve it.

Boy, Ricky Michaelson ... you really are dating yourself there 79. Guess I must be getting old myself since I am right there with you. Guys like him and Ronnie Valentine were quite the scorers back in the 70's playing for the Monarchs.

Thanks for the recap of your visit to the practice facility. I like the sound of the couple of guys doing the 3 point shooting drills. Any idea of who it may have been?

As a youngster I remember the state scoring contest he and Roy Ebron from Booker T (I think) had their SR seasons. Michaelson won on the last night of the season. Ebron had scored 69 the night before, and Michaelson answered in the 80s to beat him out. I would later go to the same HS as Michaelson.

Here is my take on this upcoming season. We went 19-12 last year, and outscored our opponents by 3.2 points a game. We would have won several more with modest better FT shooting. At 19-12 we shot 32.4% 3 pointers. If you take out the guys gone, Baker, Fields and Talley, the returners hit 32.5%. Virtually no difference. That 32.5% includes BJ's 27.3% and Haynes' 26.8%. We are adding shartshooters. And I hope that BJ's %age improves. I'm expecting at least a team avg of 36%, would love 38% but we'll see. At 36% and taking the exact same number of treys that increases the scoring by 2.1 points a game. Sadly, I believe that will be fully offset by the loss of defensive efficiency due to the graduation of Baker and Taylor.

That leaves the "supposed" change in offense. If we shoot 4 more treys a game at a rate of 36% made over 31 games (30 regular and first tournament game like last year) that increases scoring 4.3 points per game. I dampen the full impact due to so many new players. So say a 2.8 point per game net improvement I believe with this schedule that provides an additional 2-3 wins. 3 Puts us at 22 and 8 going into the conference tournament.

If we hit what our opponents did from the FT line that provides us 1.4 points more per game. That gives us at least 1 more win. Now at 23 wins (maybe 24). We win 23 and at least 1 in CUSA tourney and we could be a least NIT bound this year.

Personally, we are past due for some goodness in the CUSA tourney.

Not sure how I feel about adding shartshooters 03-lmfao

In today's world that is a poor choice of words.

... We are adding deadeye shooters..... oh wait....

... we are adding guys who can put the ball in the basket from long range at a more prolific percentage .....

We're adding "shartshooters?" Hope I'm not near them when they start to shart...
It seems to me that a lot of basketball players can hit their shots with incredibly high percentages when they are not defended. The ability to make shots when someone's hand is in your face is the challenge...
I guess people aren't picking up on the typo joke.

Yeah, I had to go back and look. It's one of those mind tricks that you read what you think it should say. Kinda ruined the joke.

Well shart!

Hueitt Jr. does hold the North Carolina HS record for three point shots made during a game at 16. I have seen him refereed to as one of the best shooters in the nation.

Can we tip tomorrow?
Latest update... Haynes will be the starter ahead of Green to start the year...it will be interesting to see if that last ..BJ still can't handle the ball very well and will play 3 and 4. Porter and Branden Stith will both start and play together a lot.Caver looks great...best player we have..Kah is hurt and likely his career is over. All 3 freshmen look good but they are still freshmen with a lot to learn.Carver is a spot player but due to our lack of size will play some. We will play some zone and we will get the ball up the floor faster. I think we will be more fun to watch but I don't see a lot of improvement over last year. Having said that I am looking forward to this upcoming season and I hope they surprise me. I am impressed with our new commitments for 2018. We are still looking for more and I think we will be successful. Everyone we are after now are either PF or C. GO MONARCHS

Great report. Thanks
Looking like Green may be up for taking over that 6th man of the year Talley left on the table?

Bummed to hear about Kah. Sounds like we really need Porter and Brandan to stay healthy for the season - not an easy task.

I wonder if Haynes starting over Green is a sign of improvement from Haynes? He showed signs of potential last year in limited minutes.

Seems like Jones doesn't have the luxury of redshirting any of the freshmen? Lack of depth could be a serious issue for us.

Glad to hear Caver is still on pace to be our best player. He is exciting to watch and I look forward to see how he has improved in the offseason.
I'm confused (nothing new there) So the starting backcourt is Caver and Haynes? Has Green been been designated a 2? Where's Hueitt fit in at this point? Has the Greek kid shown anything that makes one believe he can help?
I hope Caver can channel his inner Freeman. I was pretty excited about Green, but if your report is accurate and he can't even beat out Haynes, we may be in for some trouble.

This does not sound great. We need Green on Hueitt to be really good for a freshman. The fact that the dude JJ sent packing prior to attrition is a starter, causes concern for me.

This is speculation, but I would think the starting lineup may look like:

1- Caver
2- Haynes
3 - BJ Stith
4 - Stith
5 - Porter

Haynes and BJ Stith come off to get us this lineup:

1 - Caver
2 - Green
3 - Heuitt
4 - Stith
5 - Porter
Sounds like Caver, Brandan, and Porter are going to need to put the team on their backs this season

JJ didn't send Haynes packing.
I hope it means Haynes has improved a lot bc I was impressed with his athletic ability, but he played terrible last year and shot frequently like he was Steph Curry.

Kah being injured on top of McClinton hurts. Not sure BJ can legitimately play the 4, but I guess we will find out.

JJ didn't send Haynes packing.

Correct. If I recall, Haynes wanted out due to limited playing time and got his wish. Then Talley was dismissed and opened up that playing time again, and JJ talked Haynes into returning. I'd hate to open the can of worms on that whole subject again, but I believe the notion that JJ sent Haynes packing is false.
