There was no way to know Talley was going to have issues detrimental to the team. The guy can play ball when his head is screwed on right. I think any CUSA team would have been happy to land him. Therefore I think JJ did a good recruitment job with Talley. Maybe not a good coaching or mentoring job, but recruiting... yeah.

We'll agree to disagree. Judging the character orbs kid is just as important as judging his basketball ability. JJ has been forced to dismiss a number of players, so it is not like this is a one off.

Talley is a good kid, no one would surmise he would be forced to leave.

Again, signing transfers does not mean they were afterthoughts or because they failed with freshman. I'm not sure where that mentality comes from.

He couldn't get through a single season without breaking the rules. Do it once its a mistake, do it twice you're an idiot, do it three times knowing you will be dismissed, you, at best, are a terrible teammate.

Check out the team. I'm saying Porter will see a huge improvement this season, the guy has put in the work and hearing good things. Godwin is looking good for a freshman.

Im not denying he made mistakes. But, hes a good kid and no one would be scared to have brought him in. Its not like we are marshall and brought in bad kids.

Then why do we dismiss so many players? Maybe they aren't bad people, but they also are not guys you want on your team and we have gotten more of them than most teams under JJ. Guys like Talley or Douglas that look like great players, but aren't being recruited by anyone are not being recruited by anyone for a reason.

I'll go. He's a wing at best. I walked past him on Campus the other day and he can't be more than 6'3. I actually didn't think it was him because he looked like a point guard. I am not sure why it matters if he can play, but he is not a big.

I will do it now.....I said earlier he was not a 6-6 PF that was advertised. I said he was 6-4.5 at best. If we are going to rely on him to play PF we are in huge trouble.

Hard to argue no one was after Talley when he just signed with iowa State AFTER his issues here. Teams wanted him coming out of HS, but he was raw.

A large part of our problems with that is bc the admistration is stricter than normal (talley/Mosely). Douglas was arrested so you could argue he was an issue. other than that?

If smoking weed means you are a bad kid, I bet the large majority of college basketball players are bad kids.

Assuming that weed was the issue...

1. It's illegal.
2. He had three chances but decided that his weed was more important to him than being a Monarch.
3. We have 14 other guys who seem to do ok without it.

No excuses. Talley reaped what he sewed.

+1 ... rules are rules. If you don't like the rules, don't sign with the team.
We are talking about good or bad kids. Smoking weed doesnt make someone a bad kid. Bad decision; maybe.

You are talking about good kids vs bad kids. I am taking about good teammates vs bad teammates and good character vs bad character. They are not the same thing.

In a vacuum smoking weed is not the end of the world. In reality, smoking enough weed to fail three drug tests when you know that your actions will reflect poorly on your school, result in your dismissal, and screw over your friends and teammates shows pretty significant character flaws.

ANd Jones should have know this beforehand?

Of course he should have. It’s irresponsible for him to have not known01-wingedeagle
I don't know. Didn't meet the kid beforehand, but when it is a trend, then you have to wonder why.

A lot more student athletes smoke then you think. Talley just may have been unfortunate when it came to getting picked for initial drug testing. I don’t know how ODU does it, but when I was in school it was completely random (when it would be and who was selected). I probably got tested 5-6 times my entire time in college, but some of my teammates were tested 3-4 times what I was tested.

Our first offense was community service and some online thing, so if someone failed their first test no one would know. I do know that if you tested positive once you basically would be picked every time or every other time.

But I would say it’s stupid to think the coach should have known before the guy got on campus. Now if he does the same stuff at Iowa State, that coach can’t claim that he didn’t know.
We got 16 guys on the roster who work their butts off during the off season and didn't break any rules. Can we talk about them.
