I think it was a poster that said it, haven't seen anything official. (unless I missed it)

Stith with play 4/5, Porter will play 5. Carver and BJ will play some 4.

I posted it... Kah has a back issue and is likely out for the year...Which means his career at ODU is likely over....Now let's get back to the playing zone defense because you can rebound better out of a zone...That is the whole reason we are playing any zone at all. We will only be playing zone when we have the small lineup in the game. The only time Brandon or Porter will play any zone is when they are in the 4 guard lineup so the new young guns can have some playing time. The new players are not ready to play big time defense yet. Maybe later in the year but not now. It is easier to box out playing zone than man to man because you can see the floor better and you know when the shot goes up so you box out whoever is in your area of the zone defense.
Playing zone for young defenders makes sense because it is easier to play defense. Though, he can take some serious work to perform well.

Completely disagree on the rebounding aspect. Have never seen anyone opine you can rebound better in zone.
@VCUSports: And that will do it. Liberty leaves the Stu with an 85-69 win over VCU in the Exhibition.

Yeah, I don't see how either poor defenders nor rebounding would lead to zone being a good option. To okay zone and not get lit up from three, you have to be good at it, and you have to be committed to it.

I have never heard anyone say it is easier to rebound out of a zone, but I have heard people say it is difficult to rebound out of a zone so much that it is almost cliche for announcers calling a game when a team is playing zone. Seems to me its much easier to box out when you know exactly where your man is.

I thought the mantra over the last several years was that we didn't play zone because it was too complicated and maybe we'd see a little later in the year as they put in time to learn it? Now I'm triple guessing myself.

Good start for Mike. I know it's an exhibition, but Liberty is an awful basketball program.

Depends on the zone. If it's a tightly compacted zone, it's easier to rebound out of a zone. If it is an extended zone, it is easier to rebound out of man.

Move over Minium, I'm jumping on the Liberty bandwagon.

I've watched a lot of basketball over the years and have always heard the exact opposite. Commentators have always said that it is more difficult to rebound out of a zone because it is more difficult to find someone to box out.

There are a few main reasons to play zone. One is that your opponent can't hit outside shots...which is why people have liked to play zone against us the last couple years. A second is that you don't match up well on a size basis from a man to man defensive basis...which would be why we would choose to play zone with a 4 guard line-up. A third is to protect your big men who are in foul trouble. We may need to employ this due to our lack of depth in the post.

Liberty won 21 games last year. Made it to the CIT quarters, lost only one starter.

And as you know by the plethora of posts here JJ is an awful coach who Rhodes has a tough time beating. So I think it is a great start to this new era at FecesU.

These days, if you are playing a tightly compacted zone, you aren't going to need to worry about rebounding because the other team is going to be raining 3s on you all night.

HA this is true. Usually the time for a compacted zone is when a team is severely overmatched in the athleticism department.
Liberty is actually supposed to be decent this year (relatively speaking). They are even ranked higher than us in that poll where we got a 191. Nice to see VCU get steamrolled, but it is just an exhibition. I believe they actually lost to Virginia State or Virginia Union one year where they made the tournament... and it may have even been their Final Four year. That said, I hope they sustain this level of suckiness all season.

If you think Rhoades didn't go for the win in his debut, at home, against liberty...you're kidding yourself.

I like the way this season is starting off. I just hope that VCU isn't too much of a drain on our RPI. 05-stirthepot

Looks like the Mike Rhoades school of defense took place again last night.

I don't understand how two Division 1 teams can play each other in an open game and not have it count towards your W/L. Just label it an exhibition and it doesn't count?
