Sorry to be a bearer of bad news, Doug Ripley is just filling in.

Rats, I thought he did a great job.

Guys, I agree about Ankerson, but the football and hoops gigs are his until he no longer wants them. The powers that be don't have the balls to make a change.

They also don't want to make a change...whichever way you want to interpret that.

I have a feeling that the constant spittle-infused echoes coming off of your own screen are making you think that there is some great consensus on this point.

My guess is that there is not.

If there isn't a consensus on this it's because our fan base has become a joke.

You know what types of schools don't fire a coach for consistently missing the NCAA tourney? W&M, that's who. Brady actually made an NCAA tourney at JMU and he still got canned a few years later.

We HAVE to raise our standards to at the very least get back to Blaine levels of success. 2 good but not great years of recruiting are not nearly enough to make up for the boring basketball/100+ rpi teams we've been watching (and most likely will be again this year).

Jones has a chance to save his job this year. He needs to do it because a few decent recruits is not nearly good enough to justify his continued employment at a job he didn't deserve in the first place.

I'm not sure about "becoming" since you've thought they've been a joke since 2005...or that's at least when I started going to games/paying attention.
Regarding Game atmosphere...loved the DJ and LOVED Doug Ripley
Regarding this team and this season. It is plain and simple regardless of how the team looked today, in January, what each player does or doesn't do, or what coach Jones does or doesn't do.

To get to the NCAA's, we must go through MTSU. The regular season and conference season can help set us up to beat MTSU.

Everyone agrees Doug Ripley needs to be the new voice of the Monarchs, football and basketball. Did the DJ help bring energy to the crowd?

There was not a lot of people at the game but I think it will certainly help. Plus the Band had some new tunes.

I liked the addition of the DJs. There wasn't much crowd to bring energy to, but I think it will be a help when we do have people in the arena. IT also made all the cheesey timeout promotions feel way less forced and much more entertaining.

Curious, why do you object to Ripley? I tend to like his work, especially on PA, but have heard folks say they don't from time to time and am genuinely interested in what it is about him that rubs some people the wrong way.

I like him, but he does talk a lot for a PA.
I don't know his PA work. I listen to some LM games and I think he doesn't give enough play by play as opposed to conversation with the color analyst. And while it may be his job to to put ODU's best foot forward, there have been too many (for my liking) games where the LM were down double digits with a couple of minutes to go and he's spouting the "well, if we do this and they do that and then we do this . . ." Invariably by the time he's done with the scenarios, the other team has hit a 3 or some such thing. If he was to take Jack's place on PA I'd have no objection. I'm embarrassed for Jack sometimes that he has to say some of the things he has to say Atlantic Bay 3rd down, now it's a Go Get 'em Monarchs play. We don't have the greatest fans in the world but when there's a play where we need to be loud, I think in general we do pretty well.

That's fair.

He is really good on PA, though. He sounds so much more professional that it reminds me how bad Jack really is.
For what it's worth, put me in the Doug Ripley camp. I think he brings some fresh energy that is desperately needed. If I may nitpick, after our player is fouled and makes the shot, Doug says "And now Caver will shoot a free throw to complete the 3 point play" Man we don't need that kind of jinxing on us! Just say he has one shot.

I'm not superstitious, but I'm a little stitious.
Well, count me in the Ripley and DJ camp. Ripley feels like I'm moving from my old flip phone to an iPhone X. As for the DJ, I'm in agreement with Monarchblue that the DJ added some funny commentary during those promos that made them work. Two examples were during the flex cam (I believe):

1. A little girl wasn't flexing but she smacked her brother and the DJ commented, "or you can just hit your brother."
2. A CNU fan had a tank top on and slid his shirt over exposing his nipple. The DJ with a chuckle said, "OK sir, we didn't need to see that" which elicited a chuckle from the crowd.
It means absolutely nothing but CBS has us as the 7th best program in the state this year;

Ha! Idiot. We are easily 3 or 4 depending how the VCU game goes. Liberty? are you effing kidding me. That shows me whoever put this list together did zero research and knows nothing about basketball
Yeah we discussed this somewhere. Not sure how Norlandwr can put that on paper.
I am not sure why some of you are so surprised. This is the perception of our program on a national level. While it may not be accurate, it is still important to have a realistic look at how the basketball world perceives us. I would argue that some people on this board have a far more distorted perception of the current state of ODU basketball that these writers.

How is this the national view of ODU basketball? We beat Richmond last year, should have beat VCU. George Mason hadn't won more than 11 games in the past 4 years before last year. Liberty won 21 games in the Big South and 3 of their wins were against DIII schools. It took me five min to look that up. This writer did no research, its is not the current state of ODU basketball because every ranking that I have seen up to this point has ODU better than every school in VA except VT, UVA and are right behind VCU in most rankings. You have no idea what you are talking about and neither does this writer.
