I do think that's a big black mark on our academic advising office. When people transfer out of Rice for academic reasons, they have failed the athletes. That's several embarrassing failures on their part this year now.

Good luck to him. I can't begrudge anyone for making a decision based on academics!

I still don't understand how this is a real reason unless he can't keep his grades up in the Rice pre-med classes.

I'd also heard that he wanted to be involved in a fraternity.

He's an honor roll kid, so I doubt that's it. I'd heard other reasons, but I'm sure we'll find out when he announces
No idea if it means anything, but Coach Kreider started following 6'7" SF A.J. Turner. Coach Pera also follows him, but starting doing so ages ago (probably when Turner was in high school). He is transferring from Boston College after 2 seasons, so would have to sit out a year. Averaged 27 mins/game as a freshman and 30 mins/game as a sophomore. Had offers from Princeton, Stanford, Harvard, Penn, Northwestern, and a bunch of good basketball programs coming out of high school (was a top-200 national recruit). Haven't seen anything else linking him to Rice.
Here's a current breakdown of Rice's 2017-18 roster by class year (scholarship players only listed), assuming both Lott and Letcher-Ellis leave:
SR (2) - Mency, Dylan Jones (Tr)
JR (1) - Cashaw
SO (4) - Adams, Harrison, Martin, Meyer
FR (2) - Hunter, Spence

Still an astounding 4 open scholarships. Not sure if any of the walk-ons are candidates for a scholarship or for major contributions.
I wonder if we might go after an international player or two... Those guys tend to sign a little later and you don't always see them coming.

Hopefully Linebaugh has some connections from his playing/coaching days in Europe.
What's the deadline for transfers to make their decisions?
Evans to VCU.

Kaarlgard once again looks like an idiot by not blocking Evans from transferring there.

Rhoades looks like a **** head for raiding our program of players. Respectable coaches do not do that. Archie Miller isn't raiding Dayton at Indiana. Shaka didn't bring a bunch of VCU guys to Texas.

I disagree on all counts. I feel better about Evans transferring with him ending at VCU. He and Coach Rhoades are obviously very close. Does anyone think Evans would have come to Rice, if not for Rhoades? If they have that Pera/Harden-like bond, more power to them.

+1. No respect for that move or the type of players he apparently recruited.

Well I guess we just agree to disagree.

I'm not so much mad at Evans as I guess if you have all your options on the table, you go where you want to be...

Kaarlgard is just incompetent. Almost every AD blocks their players from following the coach in a coaching change.

And Rhoades looks like a POS for raiding his former team. I literally can't think of an example of this happening in a non-grad situation. If he had any respect for Rice, he wouldn't do that.
It just doesn't feel that way to me when Rhoades said long ago that the first player he called after getting the Rice job was Marcus Evans, plus Evans is returning to his home state. And is it really "raiding" if only one player follows him, and that player is returning to his home state?

Totally agree on JK. Horrible move. To those who keep saying they wouldn't mind hiring young "up and comers" as coach if they only stay 2-4 years, the transfer situation will happen most every time. Who the hell wants to rebuild ever few years??

Coach takes his star player to a "better opportunity" sounds like raiding to me.

The transfer situation has pretty much killed the hire an up and comer every 3-4 years. When Tulsa started with Nolan Richardson in 1980 then proceeded to hire coach after coach most with great success they did so without losing the core players. Of course the support they receive helps keep players at Tulsa unlike Rice. Unless you have that support you find yourself in our situation.

I agree with Bigs on this one. I'm pissed at Rhoades for this, but not Evans, who both had a close relationship with Rhoades from the time he was a Freshman in high school and is returning close to home. I also don't understand how you can blame Dr. K for this. He no doubt knew that Evans was going to transfer anyway. Aside from holding grudges, why block his transfer close to home and with a coach he's very comfortable with? It's not like we play VCU or they're in our conference.
I'm in the boat too that I'm not going to get mad at Rhoades or Evans. And this move isn't unexpected at all to me. Rhoades knew that Peera had a very strong chance of succeeding him, and even though we'll have a bit of a transition next year, I do think Peera has assembled a strong staff and I could see basketball being back to the 2016-17 level within two years.

But Kaarlgard needs to put his foot down and take responsibility for the other transfers. Evans going back home to Virginia is fine, but there is no reason in the world he should allow MLE or Douglas to transfer there. I'm also wondering whether he can demand a home and home with VCU just like VCU got with Texas for next year and the year after that (that is if we want two games with them).

More importantly he needs to do some serious soul-searching within the department and find out why we're losing so many athletes in so many sports (ironically just about every major sport but baseball).

Because it makes you look soft. You're just going to let your former coach raid your team? What if Rhoades had wanted more than just Evans? What if he said "I want Evans, Cashaw, and Meyer!"

You honestly believe that JK should let guys follow coaches unfettered? That's a bad precedent.

JK could've said I'm blocking you from transferring to "C-USA, UH (Both of which he did), and VCU" and not received any flack from the athletic community. If this was truly about Evans playing close to home, he could've transferred to Hampton, William & Mary, Richmond, UVA, VA Tech, NC St, etc...

Instead, Rice gets cucked once again.
