Exclamation G5 Media Deals & Payouts
The SBC expanded their media deal with ESPN in 2021 to increase broadcasts from 15 to 23 total. I believe each school gets 500,000 in media payouts. It's unclear whether that payout will increase with the expanded media deal, or if so, by how much.

What are the deals and media payouts for the other G5 conferences?

Are there other local TV deals for individual Sun Belt (or G5) schools that you are aware of, that bring in revenue in addition to that?

RE: G5 Media Deals & Payouts
$200K is dated information it's from the old pre-2018 contract. Karl Benson through in with ESPN while C-USA and the CAA (Flo) went different directions; those different directions have not paid off.

The Sun Belt's new deal/extension with ESPN that runs through June 2031, is roughly $2m per school with an escalator (it goes up a few % every year).

https://sunbeltsports.org/news/2021/7/22...rship.aspx

https://www.dnronline.com/sports/college...b0901.html

A little blurb about the reason schools left C-USA, whose per school media payout is said to be as low as $100-200K:
Quote:"The new Sun Belt is valuable TV property for ESPN, providing quality mid-week games and depth to its ESPN+ streaming service. It’s not in the realm of the SEC or ACC, where schools can get paid more than $50 million a year for media rights. But Sun Belt schools could earn around $2 million a year when all is said and done, a figure that puts them near the top of the Group of 5 conferences and dwarfs leagues such as Conference USA and the CAA."

I heard the same Belt at aprox 2 mil. 1/2 the MWC deal and 1/3 AAC. and just over double the MAC if I remember their new deal correctly.

RE: G5 Media Deals & Payouts
What I read was that the deal ending next year for CUSA was estimated at 400k per year per school, down from $1.3 million in their 2010 contract. Who knows what the CUSA 4.0 gets.
The AAC deal was a billion dollars over 12 years ending in 2032. The old members are to get $7 million a year and the 6 newbies half that.
MWC gets $270 million over 6 years ending in 2026. But with the Boise special deal, its hard to say who gets how much. Its $3.75 million when you average it out.
With the MAC, i've seen both $8 million a year and $10 million, so between 667k and 833k per school per year. That deal ends 2027.

I've never seen anything reliable on how much the Sun Belt will get going forward. Just message board rumors. The deal before expansion was about 200k per year per school ending 2028.

If that is correct it is hard to imagine 2mil per school. Sounds like they are likely to be near MAC. if so well below MWC level and Way below AAC. Surfed a # of articles couldn't find any estimates of size of deal. I would expect it is still south of 1 mil. per school.

That is what seems logical to me, so I'm skeptical of the $2 million number that gets thrown around a lot on message boards. But the market may have gone up so $2 million isn't out of the realm of possibility.

$2MM/yr/member for SBC would be at least double what they get individually now. It doesn’t matter how much more aac or MWC makes over SBC, SBC will still be competitive vs the aac and MWC just like the aac and MWC are competitive vs acc and Pac12.

SBC had top notched G5 teams with what they were making, $2mm/yr/Mem would only make them better than they are now. What aac and MWC make has no affect on SBC performance on the field of play.

I’m repeating myself, but, this “my **** is 7cm and yours is only 1cm” stuff is getting ridiculous. What G5 needs to do is form a more practical alliance. We need to band together somehow and increase all G5 conference revenue and competitiveness as a group that works together, not against each other. I am not against AAC as an MWC fan. AAC has no affect on MWC except our stupid agreement to allow only one G5 champion a shot at a bigger postseason prize (NY6 Bowl). We aren’t powerful enough to demand more so we need to be much more creative in how that one, and only one, G5 champion gets a shot at the glory in the post season. I’m all for a G5 play-in tournament, especially if playoffs go to 8 or 12. Screw this depending on CFP committee! Just scrap G5 conference championship games and have the 4 or 8 best G5 duke it out for access to NYD/playoff. We’d have to go to 3 OOC game + 8 conference game format, and might have to all start at week zero, but I think it’s better than depending on what a poll or computer ranking says. Use those for seeding only.

RE: G5 Media Deals & Payouts
G5 College Football Playoff Payouts: $90 million collective pool
The “Group of 5” (the American Athletic Conference, Conference USA, Mid-American Conference, Mountain West Conference and Sun Belt Conference) divide their collective pool pursuant to their own agreement and formula. Although the formula has not been formally disclosed to the public, reports have the majority shared equally, with a small portion set aside to be distributed based on performance. (For example last year CUSA received $17 million from College Football Playoff.)

AAC
In 2019, the 11-school league reached an agreement with ESPN on a 12-year, $1 billion deal; it started in the fall of 2020 and runs through the 2031-32 academic year. The deal averages $83.3 million per year, which means each school receives about $7 million annually. (Navy is in the league for football only; league member Wichita State does not play football.)

Conference USA
In 2018, the league announced a five-year deal with CBS Sports Network to serve as the primary rights holder. Stadium and Facebook also carry some of the league’s football and basketball games. Schools receive $429K - 500K annually. (https://www.lcsun-news.com/story/sports/...291057001/)

Mid-American
In 2019, the league and CBS Sports Network announced a four-year extension to televise football and basketball games through the 2022-2023 season. The deal, a four-year extension from the original agreement signed in the 2015-2016 season, is through a sublicense agreement with ESPN. The deal is worth about $8 million a year, which means each of the 12 schools receives about $600,000 annually.

Mountain West
The league has a six-year deal — through the 2025-26 academic year — with CBS and Fox that will pay the league $270 million. CBS is the primary partner. Each of the 12 schools receives about $4 million annually.

Sun Belt
The league announced in July that it had extended its agreement with ESPN through the 2030-31 academic year. Each school is believed to make about $1.25M annually.

Do any of the G5 schools have local TV deals to supplement the media payouts from the conferences they are in (for games not on national tv)? I guess this would be like a second tier TV rights deal.

ESPN owns everything for the AAC, SunBelt and MAC so I don't think there is any local opportunities for those 3.

Pretty sure Hawaii has its own local tv deal and doesn't get a full MWC tv share because of it.

That is what seems logical to me, so I'm skeptical of the $2 million number that gets thrown around a lot on message boards. But the market may have gone up so $2 million isn't out of the realm of possibility.

The source of that $2 million figure is Shane Mettlen, a reporter for the Harrisonburg, VA Daily News-Record (circulation 50K). In one article he asserts that SunBelt teams "could earn" up to $2 million a year, though he doesn't say the ESPN contract will pay that amount. So, it could include what teams earn as their share of NCAAT money as a one-bid league (about $120K) and their share of the G5 CFP pool.

The ESPN deal also runs through 2031, and it's possible that figure might be what escalators would bring the payout to in the 10th year, not what it would average over the life of the contract. In a later article, Mettlen says the number could be between $1.5 and $2 million. So for the current year, a guess (no details have been released publicly) of $500K is probably a lot closer to the truth (and even that could be an exaggeration).

A thing you can do is google up the tax forms the conferences submit every year. ProPublica gets them through FOIA requests or whatever, and posts them.

I looked at the Form 990 for the Sun Belt from 2019 (last non-pandemic year, I'm not sure how long these take to trickle out).

PAge 9. Part VIII line 2B gives the Television and Radio Revenue as $3,920,523. So a little under $400,000 a year for the 10 football schools if UALR and UTA got none of that pie. But it's a little less than that in the end, because on page 10, lines 24 (b) and © they have about $1.3M in TV and instant replay expenses.

Anyway the football schools all got $1.4-$1.6M in total distributions (pages 34-39, no idea why these pages are so short) and UTA and UALR got $328,000 and $362,000.

https://projects.propublica.org/nonprofi...2817671569

Sun Belt has signed a new deal with ESPN since then, so I wouldn't be totally shocked if ESPN jumped them above the MAC. MAC-ESPN deal runs through 2027, best I can google, so they'll be on the clock soon too.

It's correct that UH has a local Pay Per View deal with the local Spectrum Sports cable subsidiary which is worth about $18 million over the life of the MWC contract. Also, the conference has agreed to share just enough of its TV money to bring UH's annual revenue up to the level of the other MWC schools. So doing the math, the incoming cash totals $270 million + $18 million = $288 million, which divided 12 ways over six years equals $4 million per year per school.

Not sure about local, but CUSA has multiple TV partners. Conference USA’s current television deal is divided through CBS Sports Network, Stadium and ESPN+ through 2023. The league’s 14 member schools brought in around $400,000 in TV revenue in 2018-19, with most of its games being accessible through free streaming serves via Facebook on mobile devices.

https://www.bgdailynews.com/sports/wku/s...a716f.html

In 2019 CUSA announced a four-year contract for a 10-game package of C-USA football games to be broadcast on NFL Network. The partnership will begin in the 2019 football season with one game each week on Saturday afternoon. However after the 2019 season the agreement was voided.

RE: G5 Media Deals & Payouts
The Sports Business Journal put the media rights of the SBC at about $1.2m per school after the extension to 2031 kicked in 2021 (guess they tore up the last three years of the prior deal).

https://www.sportsbusinessjournal.com/SB...02/15.aspx

The MAC is supposedly around $833K per school ($10m for 12 schools) according to the AP. Note it mentions the prior SBC contract that ran out in 2018-19 as $300K (the renewed one 2019-24 originally ran around $500K, and appears to have bumped up again in 2022 with the extension to 2031 and expansion approval). The MAC will likely get a bump in a couple years with inflation, as MACtion November fills a big hole in ESPN programming.

https://apnews.com/article/d01c9d9805f64...8d93c32ef6

CUSA is somewhere between $200K and $400K ($300K according to AP -- ball park). But they don't have a contract after 2022-23, and it's clear there is no interest from ESPN or FOX. Where will they go? Facebook? Or produce their own and get a channel on ESPN+ like the various FCS conferences? C-USA is likely to be the permanent caboose of G5.

This doesn't make much sense. If the Sun Belt is at $1MM per school now, and they add two schools that bring eyeballs, an FCS power, and a solid basketball school...and the additions got ESPN's blessing, then why on earth would the deal DECREASE? I'd say somewhere between $1.5-$2MM is accurate.
