Tarleton State is moving up to D-1/FCS
None of the Big Sky schools are leaving, especially for a very unstable situation. Are you all trying to be the next NoDak?

I think I might've said this in another thread but...
Ah...just bring back the Great West Football Conference and be done with it...

The UC schools in the Big West had Bakersfield crammed down their throats as the price to pay for UC San Diego getting into the Big West.
They're not going to vote for Portland State. Not a chance in hell.
Portland State is nationally ranked by USNWR and located on the west coast. Neither a Cal State, nor a UC. That's not a bad potential 12th member.
But yes Wedge, I believe Portland State is the key to any new FCS league in the west. Their location is friendly to both the WAC and BW. Pair them with UC Davis, Pair them with Seattle.
Let us know when a UC chancellor, even just one of them, says they would like to see Portland State join the Big West.
Until then, I stand by my previous statement.

And not that it changes anything, but as a geographic aside: Portland is over 1,000 miles from San Diego and over 900 miles from the Big West schools in the LA/OC area. Even the farthest north BW school, UC Davis, is well over 500 miles from Portland State (Davis is closer to San Diego than it is to Portland). Might as well move Hawai'i-Hilo up from Division II (hi, DavidSt!!!) because they'd be closer to at least one Big West member. Also, Hawai'i-Hilo has the same US News ranking (range of #293-381) as Portland State.

Denver has no interest in re-starting football for many reasons. First is money - DU ia a small private (5,000 undergrads) already nationally ranked in many olympic sports, with ice hockey as the flagship revenue sport. Football would dilute that excellence and would not return revenue to DU. DU does not have $20-100 million for this purpose either, and does not have room on campus for a football stadium.
Second, fan interest in DU football would be no more than 10,000 people per game, rattling around in rented 76,000 seat Mile Hi Stadium - terrible optics. This Denver market is way oversaturated as is with eight pro teams here and four larger public colleges (AFA, UNC, CU and CSU) all within an hour of DU, plus all the other urban and recreational distractions of a major metro area.
DU got rid of its crumbling on-campus football stadium in the 1970s.
Finally, the recruiting area for football in Colorado is pretty terrible. Not many great players from here, and those who are good wouldn't want to come here with better football traditions at other schools.

When Dixie St made the move up, it was a indication, but now with Tarleton St moving up, it sounds like a focus to get FCS football. That will bring stability to the WAC by sponsoring football at the FCS level.
I agree with with the statement that the WAC will give Tarleton better exposure. I can see 3 other big Lonestar Conferences looking to move up with Tarleton.

Midwestern St
Angelo St
Possibly A&M - Kingsville. If they get a call up, that could spur a merger between TAMU Corpus Christi and Kingsville.
Getting some of those schools for football might give some other Big Sky schools cause to think about a move like Northern Colorado and this perhaps spurs UTRGV to start football also. We could see the WAC sponsor football with a big Texas wing and some SW schools.

From the article:
Quote:Q: Has there been any discussion about the possibility football could return to the WAC as a conference sport in the foreseeable future?
Reisman: The WAC is diligently recreating a football conference that the conference was built on with its rich tradition of football.
With that wording, I hope it was a spoken interview and not an actual written answer.

Central Washington and Central Oklahoma both are upgrading their facilities. Central Washington have a bunch of club sports that they could turned varsity. They have been raising money much better than Eastern Washington.
I would look at RMAC, Lonestar, GNAC and western MIAA schools if they can't get any FCS schools to budge.

A&M Commerce is another one that could upgrade. If UTRGV and GCU started programs that’s not a bad FCS league.

Texas Southern wants into the Southland as well. Since they say no. Would Texas Southern join the WAC since they are Houston market.

RE: Tarleton State is moving up to D-1/FCS
A couple of interesting things in this article from the Fort Worth Star Telegram. One is the fact that Tarleton State has just opened up a new campus in Fort Worth. The other is the WAC starting up football in a few years. I wonder where the reporter got that from?
https://www.star-telegram.com/sports/spt...93507.html
“For years I have had a hard time filling out schedules and I can’t get games; now I’ve got offers from all over,” Reisman said. “There are many teams we’ve had talks with. We’d like to have visibility in the Metroplex. We have a brand new campus in Fort Worth and it’s important we have that identity and visibility.”
If all goes according to plan and the NCAA approves it, as expected, Tarleton State will be a Division I school in July of 2020, and a member of the Western Athletic Conference. The WAC plans to sponsor football in the next few years, so initially Tarleton will be an independent DI FCS program.

Glad to see the WAC with an expansion strategy based on a return to sponsoring football. The conference had pretty much run out of viable western D-II move-up candidates that don’t play the sport. Even the non-football-playing WAC members could see that. Now that this change in direction has landed Dixie State and Tarleton State, the older established Lone Star schools with strong football fan bases have to be thinking about their options.

Likely from the Tarleton AD (Reisman). He states the WAC is restarting football in his interview with the Stephenville newspaper.
Reisman:The WAC is diligently recreating a football conference that the conference was built on with its rich tradition of football.
Q: Without having a football conference to play in — and assuming that Tarleton will have to put together a schedule as an independent in that sport — how difficult might that be to find opponents?
Reisman: Texas is known for football. With all the FBS and FCS programs in the state and surrounding states, we feel like this will definitely give us our opportunities to build a football schedule that our fans will be excited about to see our football team play these opponents in the future.

+1
You're right. There's not much in the way of typical 1-AAA type schools west of DFW left to pick from.
(although I'm still holding out hope for UC-Colo Springs)

The students at Tarleton State have voted to approve the athletic fee increase needed to finance the move up to the WAC.
https://tarletonsports.com/news/2019/10/...asses.aspx
Credit to chrisattsu for posting this on the WAC board.
Now everything is on track for Tarleton State to join the WAC in the fall of 2020 along with Dixie State, ofsetting the departures of CSUB to the Big West and UMKC to the Summit League.

I didn’t know they were part of the A&M system.
