Azusa Pacific is in no shape to move up. Enrollment shrinking and bonds are rated junk.

My take if they want to start an FCS league? WAC needs more schools from the Lonestar, GNAC, RMAC, Azusa Pacific, Central Oklahoma and maybe a Fort Hays State to be called up. I just do not see and FCS schools ditching their conferences.

Agreed, the Franken conference has gotten unwieldy.

So UMKC is out, Chicago could go if the league can bring up some D2 football schools- WTamu, Colorado Mesa.

My question is that the SLC and Big Sky are massive for being single bid Conferences. Could the WAC peel a couple schools with football away to flesh out their football offerings and get some region schools

(Thinking schools like Northern Arizona, Northern Colorado, Abilene Christian, Incarnate Word)

A couple things.

When it comes to football, the Big Sky is not a single bid conference - usually 3 or 4

When it comes to basketball, the Big Sky only has 11 members.

Neither NAU or UNC would join the WAC.

NAU has been in the STABLE Big Sky for 50 years now. They aren't going anywhere.

If UNC were to leave for another conference, it would be for the Summit/Summit League football. But they like the BSC as well.

ACU or UIW would be more likely, since they are recent additions, and might want to align closer with schools like Tarleton

Having another FCS football school in Texas/WAC maybe the push UTRGV needs to get a program going.

What about Portland State?

WAC should push Seattle, Utah Valley, UTRGV and Grand Canyon to start up football. One of the WAC's sports writer who said that MVFC could do an FBS football merger in the WAC also said at the time that Denver and Seattle could start a football program. Both schools could rent out the pro stadiums at the time.

If Seattle do add football? CWU would be a perfect travel partner.

Westminster, UT who recently moved to D2 also talked about adding football. Salt Lake City would be a major airport to think about.

What about Portland State?

It's 1900 miles from Portland to UTRGV. They're not signing up for that.

I see no justification for any Division I school in a stable conference to join the WAC. The current WAC is for schools that have no place else to go in D-I and would move to another D-I conference right away if given the opportunity.

The only schools currently in the WAC that a start up football program make sense for are UTRGV and Grand Canyon. UTRGV has the enrollment to support it and I think there’s a decent sized minor league soccer stadium nearby that they could use. GCU is flush with cash and could upgrade their soccer stadium for football.

Seattle and Cal Baptist? Too small and private

Utah Valley? Not in the shadow of BYU

If Fullerton State, Long Beach State or Northridge State and maybe D2 Eastbay State restart their football program? The WAC is the only room left. If those Big West schools add football and go to the WAC for football only, I could see UC-Davis and Cal. Poly would leave the Big Sky for the WAC.

I am doubtful that any Cal St schools will revive or start up programs. I also don’t see a reason to leave a stable, multibid Big Sky if you are UC Davis or Cal Poly.

That's definitely true, although FWIW I think the conference is in slightly better shape than it was about two years ago.

Would the University of San Diego (the WCC member, not to be confused with the MWC or future Big West schools also in that city) consider upgrading football from the non-scholarship Pioneer Football League to a more regionally appropriate FCS WAC?

They have done the study - the cost of adding scholarships far exceeds the cost of 4 cross-country flights for conference games. So unless they want to spend millions more, that is not an option.

Still pushing the Great Northern?

He DID say that D2 Texas schools going to the WAC was going to be the first sign, but all of his other predictions were a bit...optimistic.
