(07-31-2016 06:40 AM)LeadBolt Wrote: [ -> ]If I recall correctly, there was a successful push to raise money for summer school tuition for men's basketball so that the guys could spend the summer in Williamsburg strengthening their academics and working out. Does anyone know if this was this implemented?

Yes, all players were scheduled to attend the second summer school session. They were able to get in weight training, scrimmages, and practices. There are major limits to the amount of time coaches can spend with them each week, but I think it's pretty organized outside of that time to allow for good teamwork and conditioning.

I think the NCAA began allowing coach involvement in 2012(?). We have had players in during summer for years, but I'm not sure how many students were able to take classes to help reduce their in-season workload. Our summer school fundraising was developed to provide additional funds to pay for classes in the summer. There was already some monies set aside for this (that people had contributed to with the stated purpose that it go to summer school). I wanted to increase this fund so that all players would have summer school classes paid for.

Thanks to the amazing response from many on this board, we have raised over $78,000 in gifts and pledges. It all started here and then some others kicked in as the fiscal year ended. We had some previous basketball players come in with nice donations and five-year pledges as well. I haven't followed up with anyone in the basketball program to see how many class hours the guys got.

Fantastic! Basketball, with mid-week travel takes a toll on classes. Summer school helps that a lot. I didn't realize the NCAA had changed the rule on coach involvement. Were all of our recruits able to participate?

Yes, Justin Pierce and Nathan Knight were both here for summer 2 session. Got to participate with everyone.

Was Matt Milion here as well? Will he need to sit out this year?

Coach Holmes tweeted today that both Matt & David Cohn were working hard in the gym. So he's there. As a D1 transfer, Matt has to sit out this year.
I had an opportunity to see one of the final all-squad scrimmages (no coaches allowed) a little over a week ago
before the players head to their homes for a few weeks until the College term begins.

One scrimmage, of course, isn't a full picture of the team at all...but all the players other than Tott (who is playing this summer for the Slovakian National Team) were there and all save Hunter Seacat (who had a minor ankle problem that kept him from scrimmaging) played during the hour plus at the Rec Center.

Just a few quick observations based, of course, on just one hour of viewing...

*Dixon is in remarkable shape, with additional pounds of sheer muscle across his chest, and looked in mid-season form for his biggest season yet (he is playing in the DC located Kenner League against Power Five players. He also looked taller, but that may be due to his more muscled physique.

*Omar is Omar, displaying all his shots...the hook in the post, the two handed three-pointer that sometimes looks like the old 1950s set shot, the "carry the ball on his hip" drive, etc. Several of the players told us they expected him to score 20+ points a game.

*Milan, the BC transfer, is a left-handed Burchfield, but with more solid bulk and game. He will step right in a year from now as a starter or sixth man. He moves well and showed penetrating strength.

*Speaking of Burchfield he appears ready to continue to expand his driving game that he showed in spots last season. In the scrimmage he drove to the basked numerous times and was very aggressive. The sixth man it appears. He has added a few much-needed pounds

*Malinowski is in top shape, looked to me that he's primed to start. He literally glides across the court
and is much stronger and bulkier. He was missing his shots during the scrimmage but showed his unique court situation awareness. He won't steal the ball like Tarpey, but has great instincts and will score much more.

*Cohn talked to me about twenty minutes...he is effusive about the team and believes greatly in his team
mates. Showed his patented speed/quickness and deception and said that with all the shooters on the team he looks to drive and pass the ball out for open shots lots more this year. The guy looked in mid-season form
and, to these eyes anyway, is ready to play 30+ minutes a game this year.

*Whitman looked thicker in the legs and showed more aggressiveness...at least in the scrimmage. He has been practicing a outside 8-12 foot shot and made several. Can he replace Sheldon?...a one-hour viewing
isn't anywhere near enough to say.

*Burchfield was aggressive in the workout, driving/rebounding and demonstrating why he was All-Metro in DC. Paul has lots of ability, can shoot the lights out, and I believe he'll be part of the eight or nine man rotation as a sub this year. He is 6-8 and could be a valuable part of the team.

*I saved what might be the best for last......Nathan Knight could be a game-changer for our Tribe. This young man is 6-9 (no doubt about it) and easily weighs 250-260...but it is all muscle. He has no flab, none.
His wing span is easily in the seven foot range and he can jump. he has an outside shot. He showed the ability to dribble the ball the entire court and can pass fluidly. The power center/forward W&M has never had. He's a raw talent, easily fouls too much and has lots to learn. But it's all there...potential we've not seen at that position at W&M. His contribution this season depends on learning from Tony, adapting to the defense and developing his talents. A budding big-time player.

In summation...a team that has a very good chance to win 20 games again despite playing teams like Duke, Louisville and Rhode Island on the road. If every thing comes together...and I really hesitate to say this...
the team that, barring major injuries, finally takes us to the NCAA.
Thanks for the update...
And Pierce ?

I'm expecting that Matt will help the team by pushing the other PG's in practice. I'm glad to hear that he and Cohn are working out together. That will help both in the long run.
I really like the gym rat culture in place. You hear how tireless guys are in their individual workouts and then you are adding guys like Pierce and Loewe that are reportedly legendary in their hometowns for working out. These guys will be ready.
Sorry to leave out Pierce. He is as advertised...similar in build to Omar. Very quick and a relentless player
with a quick shot and very athletic moves. With Rowley, Burchfield, Omar, Daniel, and Malinowski already here just not sure how much he'll play this year.

How about Schlotman, How did he look? I know Tony had high hopes for him.
Schlotman was playing point guard during the scrimmage and, as he always does, showed finesse with this ball handling and passing. Did try a couple of penetrating drives, something we really haven't seen much of in his time here to date. He is not going to get, unless somebody gets injured, lots of playing time with Cohn and
Tott here and with Dixon doubling down at time at guard.
Interesting to look back on this thread. Pierce, Knight, et al. Really leaves me with continued appreciation for all the hard work our coaches put in just to make us happy.

We were all so in love with Nick Sherod, too. Pierce's average in assists and rebounds more than doubles Sherod and Pierce also averages more than 2 points more per game.

I'll take Justin and thrilled he chose the Tribe.

Agreed. And as was discussed in another thread, a commitment from Sherrod or Pemberton would make the Milon transfer not possible. I'm not trading Milon for either one.
As a continuation of the Tribe recruit comparisons, I have seen Davidson play multiple times this year in person, and I wouldn't trade Luke Loewe (who had considered Davidson) for Davidson commit, Carter Collins ( Tribe target), for anything.

I, also, would not trade Milon for Richard Washington, who has seen basically no court time in two seasons at Wake.
