Nothing wrong with going 4-23 or whatever the 93-94 season offered and nearly every loss was a blowout. So nice that, today, something like that would be totally unacceptable.
So, back to recruiting. We have two, 2016 graduates on the current squad, Tarpey and Sheldon. We have two recruits signed, Knight and Pierce. If we were to sign a third recruit, or pick up a transfer, does that third slot eliminate the walk-on, Jamison Glover, for the 13th spot on the roster next year? I assume that a transfer wouldn't impact the 13th slot because he'd have to sit out a year like Cohn. And how in the world do we replace the six scholarship players who are currently classified as sophomores when 2018 rolls around? Talk about a recruiting challenge!
No, Glover wouldn't be affected. It's 13 scholarship players, not total. Most teams carry a roster of 15. Those additional 2 walk ons are very important for practice as the season progresses. A transfer, if under scholarship, would count against the 13. I would imagine some of the scholarship logjam will sort itself out the way it was created - through injuries. Otherwise they will either go scholarship light for 2018 or try to bring in a big class. I think it comes down to who they like and who they can get. Shaver, recently, hasn't been in the business of just giving away scholarships unless he feels they can be an impact.
All this talk of Coach Swenson led me to wonder where he is now, so I Googled him. I didn't find an answer, but I did find his Wikipedia bio -- which I wonder if he wrote himself, or if somebody was having a little joke.

Did you know that "Statistically, Swenson was the one of the most winning coaches W&M men's basketball history." that "Coach Swenson has been known as ones of the countries [sic] greatest recruiters," and that "His efforts as a motivational speaker have been recognized by many organizations and universities."?

How did we ever let this miracle worker slip away from Williamsburg???

As an aside -- belated thanks to any members of the 93-94 team that post/read here. Thanks to your suffering through that awful season, we were able to get rid of him.
One great memory from 93-94. As you know, UNCW doesn't have a football team. So, their homecoming is scheduled during basketball season. Let's just say when we weren't very good we were scheduled there a few times. One of our 4 wins that season was at their homecoming. We played great that day. UNCW fan's were a little displeased. I remember one of our assistants almost getting in a fight with a fan that threw a drink cup at him. Good times...
UNCW fans don't throw things on the court and you know it! Not even a Frisbee.

Thanks! Very helpful information.

Mr J--I'm still trying to figure out who you are. When did you play?

I think you mean when was I on the team :-)

I played in the Swenson/Woolum era of the mid 90s
Sorry that you had to endure playing for Chuckie.

I have a few coaching stories that would make you shake your head, but I'm not comfortable sharing here. Maybe over a beer at Paul's sometime.

Name the date and time...I'll be there. I most enjoyed his gesture of halfway taking his coat off when he was mad at the refs.

I went to all the games at home from 1988 to 1991. My fondest recollection of Coach Swenson was how he often rewarded a great offensive or hustle play with a seat on the bench. If a guy was struggling, he remained on the floor until he did something good. Charlie though was an excellent coach. Had Randy Bracey not gotten hurt, we might have won the CAA tourney in 1998. Charlie and Coach Shaver also both represent W&M very well. I do laugh at any negative comments toward Coach Shaver because anyone that watched our teams during the Swenson years knows how much better things have been the last 11 years. I wish our players from the late 80's and early 90's could have played for Charlie or Tony. There were some talented players that played during that era but the system made it nearly impossible for them to win consistently.
You have to look at the entire Tribe situation in the athletic department during the Swenson years to understand how he got here and why. Our AD made some really stupid mistakes including that hire, but was very well liked by some in the administration. Some would look at him as a hero of sorts, but he wasn't very good as an AD. Compare that to what we had in the 70s and since Driscoll showed up. I give this Athletic Department a lot of credit even though they may not be perfect, we've seen massive changes in terms of facilities and fund raising.

Please explain. As an Alum I lived and worked in PA, NJ, NY, and CT for 30 years after gratuation. In those days, before the internet, there was Zero news about W&M Athletics available beyond the Commonwealth of VA. I felt lucky even finding a W&M football or basketball score listed in the Sunday Edition of the NY Times. I was always a regular contributor to The College but in those days did not specify that my contributions go to W&M athletics. [Which I now do]
Maybe a new topic could be started on this subject. We've strayed pretty far from 2016 basketball recruiting.

Plus one04-chairshot
Yeah, not that this stuff isn't interesting, just needs it's own playground, so we can look here for player/recruit news.
"KUA defeats Champlain College (QC) 84-49 in an Exhibition today in Meriden. Nathan Knight leads with 22 points and 10 rebounds."
William & Mary signee Justin Pierce had 36 points and 15 rebounds in three quarters against Glenbard North (Ill.) per @MercuryEliteAAU
Goodness.
Pierce follows up his monster night
"Glenbard West 2016 SG Justin Pierce @JustinBPierce3 drops 36 pts and 14 reb tonight!William & Mary commit had 36 & 15 last night"
Cross your fingers...it's early in the high school season but Knight and Pierce look like pretty fair recruits.
