RE: Is It Too Early To Start The Fire Candle Thread…
Here is the take from at least 4 ex players on the game last night (texting during the game):
- Finn did not look good; very uncomfortable not being mobile
- Gleason looked way good enough vs. EMU that he should have been starting this game, give Finn another week to heal
- Finn's completions were in great part due to receivers making a ton of adjustments on poorly thrown balls
- We are looking very much more a lucky team than a team growing with each victory
IMO the program is successful but certainly not building on the "consistent success" that Lester is mentioning
Keep in mind that our new AD wants UT to be "the BEST G5 program" in the country and our FB team is not headed in that direction
Hoping for a good November crowd on Tuesday!!! Go Rockets!

WORST PLAY CALLING IN HISTORY OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL LAST NIGHT!!!!!!!!
TOTAL &$%@#!*^% !!!!!
Throwing deep consistently on 2nd & 5 form your own 15. Making a not even close reception on 6 consecutive series. Everyone around me was going crazy. First time ever I went down to the first row and YELLED at Candle when he was less than 15 feet from me when he was talking head to head with Finn. I screamed at him about "his play calling sucks !!!!!!!!!". I was completely overwhelmed with frustration at our complete nonsense play calling. WE were never ever calling "yardage appropriate" plays. On 3rd and long we were dinking screens behind the line that were snuffed out for losses 3 times.. We never threw to the sticks or first down line.. I just don't understand.
We are very fortunate we won last night. We've lost two heartbreakers but our choices in those games were &^%$#*^ crazy too.
We are 7-3 & 5-1. Lucky to be so and unlucky to not be 9-1 and 6-0. Crazy season.
Go Rockets!!!!!!!

If the Rockets win out and make a good showing in Detroit/Bowl game, it would be a safe bet that Candle & Co. will exit for greener pastures…
Then all this positive or negative conjectures about the current state of the football program will be a moot point !!

I think the bottom line for some is they would like to see a legitimately strong and respected program. This year feels like Toledo will win the West, because everyone else in the West stinks. Is there anyone in the West ranked above 100? Toledo beat Ball State last night, because of skill players on offense and the defensive coaching/play. Last night's offensive game plan seemed to be to throw it 30 yards down the field, run it up the middle for 2 yards, and occasionally utilize the tight end. That was about it. A solid offense and offensive coaching staff beats Ball State by at least 17. Ball State has a great running back, but that's it. Being happy happy, because Toledo is playing slightly better than the worst teams in the nation, seems empty.

Last night I was not pleased either. Too many run on first downs, and using Boone inside our own 20 yardline. But winning these games is a positive change. We may just have the leadership on defense to overcome indeptitude on offense in moments.
Ball State looked like us in 2019 and 2020. Competitive vs. a better team with a bell cow runningback that just isnt quite enough. Their fan base thought Neu was worse than Candle. Rough go of it for coaches in the MAC outside of Albin.

I just did if you’re going to be offended that people don’t think Candle should be the head coach here at Toledo. Also, some posters on this board think all comments should just be positive and everyone is happy and no coach should be criticized and I’m just glad those posters don’t read pro sports teams fan comments

It is going to be hard to fire him should he win the division. Mid American conference coaches don’t generally get fired for doing their job. Their job is to be competitive within the conference. Anything more than that is a bonus. If he wins the division and certainly if he wins the conference, there’s no way you can fire the guy.

Is It Too Early To Start The Fire Candle Thread…
The west used to be the bell cow of the MAC. This year, outside of UT, OU and UB, it's a down year overall. I am glad we are sitting at 5-1 in the conf (should be 6-0). But like another poster said, I don't see a team gelling and getting better and playing like a well oiled championship team.Same dumb penalties and play calling each week.
We are very lucky to win two, one score games in a row. I guess that is good, but when our luck runs out, I hope it's not in the MACC game. It took a 4th and 10 completion vs EMU. Last night after a dud of an offensive second half, we get one good drive to pull ahead. I hope some of it was rust on Finn's part, but he didn't look good throwing the ball, despite 300 yds in the air. Recievers were under thrown and adjusting all over the field.
I still don't think we can run the ball effectively. If we needed one long, pounding, clock-sucking, soul-crushing drive to preserve a win, I'm not sure we have the horses to do it. On decent runs we get 6 yds and can't break a tackle. I think our next starting running back isn't on the roster yet.
I think it will be an interesting game in Detroit, but have zero expectation that we'll come away with a bowl victory. I was pretty optimistic we'd be competive in the bowl after the 2017 championship and we got curb stomped. I liked our offensive group better on that team with Woodside, Swanson, Diontae, Adeniyi, etc.

Except that he is being paid twice as much as some MAC coaches. When you get that money there are some big expectations,

The 2nd year in a row playing App State after winning the MAC for the 1st time in 13 years, in another Alabama city is not something I care to think about as a dig on UT. The guys used it as a vacation. We had a boatload of seniors who smashed records on that team. It is what it is... We were a top 40ish team who didnt care. Agree to disagree.
There are only 7 or 8 of G5 teams I wouldnt expect to beat. And we should be competitive vs. all of them. Troy is very good. Coastal is very good. Tulane, and UCF are very good. I like our chances to play a one score game vs. the rest. If its a game vs. MSU in Detroit, itl be about motivation. Id be excited just to be in attendance.

9 wins, 11 wins, 6 wins, 7 wins, 7 wins, 7 wins with 4 left. Average those out yourself.
Dont count how ever many you want, because "they werent his players"... although he was on the staff and was the main recruiter under Campbel... Amstutz doesnt get 2001s title, thats Pinkel right? Beckman basically made us great in 2012... you see how silly that is.

I think you are missing my point...we have four seasons since last MACC game, seems like expectation at this point is to get to MACC where team should be, and not just another 7 win season and losing a bowl game. So last night has gotten team to edge of getting to MACC-that's great and what we should be expecting, anything short of that would have been disappointing. If Rocket had recent string of poor seasons, below .500, never contending, then expectation would be different.

Highest paid coach has an incredibly bad record against MAC teams with a winning record. That's not success by most people's standards nor is it earning the income. The complaints are legit.
If complaints about the coaching are getting old for you, which I can understand, you have options. Or you can show the ability of empathy and realize these are mostly just venting. They are not addressing you. They are not personal attacks on you. Even so, you can even put on "ignore" if you are that weak a person, as a few seem to be.
It's the ADs job by what measures to determine if a coach is earning the salary. "Fans" can come and go as they please. If that is a struggle for another fan to understand, then isn't that their problem?
too much bold face.

I like UT chances to finish 9-3, many mid majors in the nation would like that record.
