RE: Is It Too Early To Start The Fire Candle Thread…
Just revive the old Candle threads when he was the OC. Funny how the Board had gone after Cannon hard - and he was eventually gone and then out of coaching completely. Same with the DC in the Amstutz days when Toledo Tom found him a head coaching job in Indiana (Lou West).

Seems the Board finds the coaching weaknesses long before the AD does.

We were, but left at halftime. The Candle era has really tempered my passion for Rockets football in a negative way.

Not yet, what if the Rockets are 3-1 going into MAC play ? More then likely 2-2. If they are flat coming out playing CMU and lose, the boo birds will be out then.

Everything about that offensive performance was underwhelming.

With us starting out MAC play with CMU and NIU, we will know quickly how good or bad this team is. D looks great. O looks really bad.

The lack of an offensive line tonight and declining performance over the last 4 years was not a surprise. Seeing that Finn's running abilities kept our offensive moving for a while was expected. But keeping Finn in the game in the 4th quarter was insane. Had he gotten hurt we would have no future offense. Bad choices along with a bad 4th down call. Nothing has changed for the positive, it will be a long year!!

Quit talking about OL injuries. We have no depth. Last year was bad and we have the same this year. Candle won't fire his buddies, so this is what we have.

There are (or was) 21 offensive lineman (not including long snappers) on the roster heading into the season. I think 5 were true freshman - so they probably won't figure into the numbers unless injuries continue to pile up (although it appears Spoth may get some PT). Then add another for Devin Rogers being moved from DL to center and getting a lot of playing time there last nigh. So - in total, 22 available players - 2 out with injuries. Don't know how many are walk-ons. If we recruit that many offensive linemen and can't get a consistent, let alone dominating, performance from the OL - what does that tell you about the coaching and recruiting for those positions. You're right - Candle won't fire his buddies - unless he is told to do so (opinion based on what came up a couple years ago with the defense coaches dismissed). And now look at the defense. Impressive. The seniors on the OL: Kelvin Ateman who was supposed to be a superstar out of Cass Tech. Has been somewhat underwhelming. Great size at 6-6 300, but not a pile mover. Mitchell Berg - 6-6 295 One of the injured. Expected back mid-season. Has done well. Chris Ocasio 6-2 300 transfer in from Edinboro. No knowledge of what to expect. 2nd year in a row with a transfer from Edinboro. Can we recruit their coach away from them? Those only seniors on the OL I saw from a peak at the current roster.

So hopefully they get better through the year. Need a leader on the field. Maybe Rogers can bring that attitude from the defense to the offensive line. Glad the coaches came up with this idea to bail Hallett out. Wonder what happens if we don't have Rogers to spell others on defense. He's 6-2, 285 and a Jr. He looks to have a serious intent on the field. Will he take over the line and get in guy's grills if they keep getting beat or miss assignments? Seems no one else does.

3 OL out with injuries, Candle said in the presser that Ocasio was hurt in preseason and is out too.

Not sure I would have played Finn in 2nd half at all.

With the Offense needing work, play him at least the 3rd quarter.

I think they all want to be coaches... but in reality they just in the stands or go home at halftime.

100% agree! 22 guys on the roster and the best Toledo can do is pull a defensive lineman for some added depth. Where is the development and recruiting? The defensive staff certainly have it figure out. Candle made the coaching changes to fix that. Candle's forte is supposed to be offense, and the offensive line situation is bad. Toledo should have scored at least 50 last night. That's the kind of game, where Toledo should have at least 2 running backs over 100 yards. OSU and San Diego State defensive lineman are going to be carrying our backfield into the their endzone for scores. I can realistically see Toledo having negative yards of offense against those two teams. Toledo has Central after that. Central put up 44 on Oklahoma last night. Toledo probably has a better defense than Oklahoma State, but if you can't score or get a first down, it won't matter. If Toledo begins MAC play 0-2, it's beyond time to move on to a new coach.

Defense will be fine and keep this team in many games but you still need to move the ball and score points - and regardless of the reasons (and there are many) this offense will continue to struggle and be consistent -that will get one to a 6-6 or worse season
