There is no need to do anything BB wise. 11 works just fine for con scheduling. Until you decide on a FB move you don't lock yourself in doing a BB one.

This is what nobody seems to understand. It’s not about scheduling. It’s about quality. The UConn loss degrades the quality of AAC basketball and actually IMPROVES the overall quality of AAC football. Thus, we need a shot in the arm on the basketball siide far more than for football. Furthermore, unlike football, there are potential “non-football” additions in the east that actually add value. Much like Wichita (and unlike many football suggestions like UAB, GSU, Buffalo, and ODU), a school like VCU actually adds value to the AAC.

The point is, building toward being a true P6 league is about QUALITY—not how neatly the scheduling works.

Yup. That last paragraph is a concern.

My grand plan includes Boise State, Air Force, and Colorado State as all sports additions. BYU, Gonzaga, Dayton, and VCU as all but football. BYU gets scheduling alliance in football.

14/18, Memphis and Navy move east for football, 9 game schedule. 20 basketball games. Other sports become region specific with a national conference championship.

VERY... but I do think it also shows why many MWC teams may become interested in the AAC. We dont have P5 money, but were a hell of a lot closer than anybody else.

Now if we can just get our NCAA tourney credits up, so were at least bringing in $12-13 million a year total.

This will never happen. Hawaii has its own TV deal on the side and adds no value to the conference, along with the nightmare of travel.

That TV deal is less than an AAC FB share. Hawaii has a better FB brand than UConn, but we would need a BB add to balance it out.

Bows have that deal in place because the MW deal sucks for them. The American can make a good case to shake them loose.

The MWC has openly talked about dumping San Jose State and Hawaii. Also, we need a 12th member in football for the Conference Championship game. There is no need for a 12th member in basketball. We can do a 20 game conference schedule or continue to play the top teams against each other and the bottom against the bottom.

Until you decide on a FB move you don't lock yourself in doing a BB one.

1) "no need to do anything BB wise"

What about the fact that the conference only has 3 likely NCAA teams at this point and is about to lose strong MBB and WBB programs?

2) "don't lock yourself in"

Since there is no prospective all-sports member, the best FB option is a FB-only school (e.g., AF, CSU, SDSU).

Therefore, there is no significant concern about "locking ourselves in" by adding a BB school first.

.
Further, the conference needs to add a school in the next 12-16 months to have 12 FB programs within the two year waiver period.

College football: FBS conferences with fewer than 12 members now able to hold championship game

https://www.ncaa.com/news/football/artic...-able-hold

The rule chance was passed for the sole purpose of allowing the Big XII to have conference champion ship game without having to expand beyond the 10 members they had in 2012.

Prior to 2016: "Under current rules, FBS conferences must have at least 12 members, and championship games must be between the winners of two divisions within the conference. Each division must play a round-robin schedule during the regular season in order to hold a championship game."

The AAC at 11 members falls under these guidelines:

2016-present:
"Council members adopted a proposal that originated with the Division I Football Oversight Committee but also approved an amendment from the Big Ten Conference. The amendment, offered by the Big Ten late last week, allows conferences with fewer than 12 members to hold championship games in football, as long as they meet one of two additional conditions: Conferences that want to play championship games must either play their championship game between division winners after round-robin competition in each division or between the top two teams in the conference standings following full round-robin, regular-season competition between all members of the conference."

.
For the AAC, however, these newer rules don't permit the AAC to have a CCG unless there are two unbalanced divisions (6 and 5 teams), or unless that AAC were to play a full round robin conference schedule.

That's why it was necessary to obtain a two year waiver.

============================================
.
The conference must choose one of these options:

1) 6 and 5 team divisions

2) play a full round robin schedule

3) add a 12th team soon enough - - to come on board BEFORE the expiration of 2 year waiver period (presumably the 2021 FB season).

4) Pin their hopes for a CCG game on an extension of the 2 year waiver or an additional rule change.

5) Don't play a CCG game for an indefinite period.

.
Options 4 and 5 appear quite unlikely.

Options 1 and 2 are disagreeable to the AAC schools & Commissioner.

That leaves option 3 as the best way to move forward.

Option 3 would have the added benefit of expanding the conference's viewership and recruiting footprints into a new metropolitan (or national with AF) region.

Option 3 would also be an insurance policy to keep the conference at a minimum of 10 teams even if 2 AAC teams are raided by 2026.

Further, option 3 would strengthen the recruiting and viewership profile of the AAC in BB and FB, which will be weakened as a consequence of having the second lowest number of schools among the P6 conferences.

Three is the preferred option---BUT ONLY if there is a school that can be added that enhances the AAC brand...and we all know who those 3 or 4 schools are.

Agreed.

However, the conference will be faced with a hard deadline, assuming no waiver extension or rule change beyond 2021. Specifically, (unless the AAC were to resume East and West Divisional play with 6 and 5 team divisions in 2022) a new FB member would need to be added for the 2022 season for an official 2022 CCG game to be played.

In order to accomplish that, an initial short list - - of schools that meet AAC criteria and express interest in FB membership - - would probably need to be prepared within the next 12-16 months (by Jan 1 to May 1, 2021), and the addition of a 12th FB school would need to be agreed upon and formalized early enough to reschedule the games for the 2022 FB season.

--Realistically, a 12th member would probably need to be selected by ~ December 31, 2021, if not earlier, in order to make the necessary arrangements for the 2022 conference schedule.

Bearing these time constraints in mind, Commissioner Aresco would have to begin initiating contacts with each of the potential and conceivable conference FB schools within the next 6-10 months, so that he can begin to identify the set of schools that could be included on an initial short list.

Aresco's widest possible "fishing net" would probably include no more than 7 or 8 conceivable additions (top candidates (any of AFA, SDSU, CSU, Boise, BYU that might express interest) plus another 2-3 wild cards that could possibly meet the AAC criteria in a year or two (another MWC, or possibly a Buffalo, Marshall, Independent, etc.).

To assemble a final short list, more extensive discussions and examinations would probably need to take place, including consultations with ESPN in a winnowing process between January and August, 2021.

Assuming that the final decision about a 12th FB member would need to be made between June and December, 2021 - - in time to finalize the details and get to work on rescheduling the 2022 season - - the final short list of 2-3 schools should be prepared by September 1, 2021, if not sooner.

.
If this kind of estimated timetable is even broadly accurate, Commissioner Aresco's stated position of not initiating contacts with potential AAC members would have to be modified quite soon, unless the conference would prefer to resume East/West divisional play with 6 and 5 members beyond the 2021 season. The other options are either unacceptable or too uncertain to rely on.

.
In this context, it would be surprising if the AAC schools haven't already been having some fairly detailed conversations about potential candidates that might belong on a short list. The process may be more advanced than some would assume.

In addition, it can be conjectured (or hoped) that Aresco has already had some initial conversations with conceivable candidates, among the non-P5 schools that he invited to contact him if they had any interest in exploring AAC membership.

The bottom line is that Aresco and the AAC can't remain aloof and disinterested in searching for a 12th FB member for too much longer, unless they are willing to live with the adverse consequences of continuing with only 11 FB schools in 2020, 2021, and beyond.

Here's how CSU describes itself "Colorado State University in Fort Collins, the System’s flagship institution, is a doctoral-granting research university with a student body of more than 33,000, with one out of four students being first-generation scholars. As the state’s only land-grant institution, CSU has been serving Colorado since 1870. CSU boasts top-ranked business, veterinary medicine, and journalism schools, as well as groundbreaking research in atmospheric sciences, infectious diseases, and clean energy technologies. In addition, the CSU Extension offices, providing services to all 64 counties in the state, offer community-oriented education, research, and 4-H programs."

No quality team will join AAC without an AAC binding agreement. Everything has to wait till 2026 when B12 renegotiates its TV contract and makes a final decision on expansion.

What do you mean by a "binding agreement?"

Are you referring to the need for the AAC members to formally agree to replace UConn with a 12th member, and to confirm it with ESPN?

If so, that could be done in time for the 2022 season.

No need to wait until 2026.

Of course, everything could change in 2026, but the AAC could function until 2026 with an agreement signed, let's say, by 1/1/2022.

There's no guarantee that the Big 12 will either "blow up" or raid the AAC in 2026.

The AAC could/should prepare for 2026 by adding a 12th member(s) in both sports, so if 2 AAC teams are raided, the AAC can move forward with a minimum of 10 teams per sport.

That would have diluted the payouts to then-current B12 teams. When ESPN wouldn't buy in, the B12 aborted their expansion plans. That probably left a bad taste in the mouths of some schools who went through a lot of time, effort, and $$ to apply for the invitations the B12 offered.

You're close, but it would not have diluted the payouts, b/c there was a clause saying the B12 could add up to 4 teams and ESPN would have to pay the full rate for each, without diluting current payouts.

The B12, due to political reasons, got greedy and tried to add 4, and ESPN squashed it by threatening to bail on the Big 12 when their current contract was up.

I think if they had tried to add only two, it might have worked.

.
According to this in-depth article, the 2016-17 three-act farce was mainly attributable to political controversies, disagreements between Texas and non-Texas schools, and discouraging financial projections:

.
Remember when the Big 12 was going to expand ...

Jun 28, 2017 Jake Trotter ESPN Staff Writer

As the Big 12 presidents and chancellors were wrapping up their summer board meeting in Irving, Texas, last July, one prominent school official was driving to a dinner when he flipped on his satellite radio.

...he couldn't believe what he was hearing.

"Almost careened off the road," said the official, who immediately began phoning his colleagues... They, too, were stunned.

"...an inferiority complex drove the Big 12 to begrudgingly explore inviting Group of 5 members, even when the desire to do so was never really there.

...It didn't take long for the Big 12's public expansion process to turn messy.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (and other TX officials) posted messages endorsing Houston's bid to join the conference. "Big 12 expansion is a non-starter unless it includes University of Houston," Abbott wrote.

Houston, meanwhile, failed to generate enough support among the non-Texas schools, which feared having to recruit against another Texas school for precious Texas talent.

BYU had been viewed as the frontrunner in any Big 12 expansion scenario. The LGBT community's opposition, however, severely diminished BYU's candidacy.

Elsewhere, close to 20 schools from the Group of 5 schools mobilized to compile talking points, brochures, PowerPoints and videos...

Yet just as the operation was ramping up, the appetite for expansion was rapidly waning again.

During league meetings... the expansion push lost almost all momentum, especially after Boren was informed that adding the likes of Houston or BYU or Cincinnati would not deliver the lucrative conference network for the Big 12 he so desired.

As the Big 12 began staging the in-person interviews in Irving, it was becoming clear no candidate stood much chance of inducing the eight votes needed to secure an invitation."

Good post! OU President Ben Boren started the B12 expansion fiasco. Barry Switzer, OU's primary fund raiser for both academics and sports, immediately came out against expansion.

https://www.ncaa.com/news/football/artic...-able-hold

The rule chance was passed for the sole purpose of allowing the Big XII to have conference champion ship game without having to expand beyond the 10 members they had in 2012.

.
For the AAC, however, these newer rules don't permit the AAC to have a CCG unless there are two unbalanced divisions (6 and 5 teams), or unless that AAC were to play a full round robin conference schedule.

That's why it was necessary to obtain a two year waiver.

============================================

Three is the preferred option---BUT ONLY if there is a school that can be added that enhances the AAC brand...and we all know who those 3 or 4 schools are.

.

You keep missing the point. There is no drop dead date or period of time when the AAC knocks off the “aloof act” and takes Blinn Jr College simply because they are kinda in the footprint and are willing to say “yes”. This is not an “act” or a “game”.

The league already has a list. It is a very short list of teams that actually add value and help support the leagues P6 initiative. We all know who those 3 or 4 teams are. If we can’t swing a deal to get one of those teams—then we will either continue on with a divisionless CCG (if a rule change happens) or we go temporarily to uneven divisions. Eventually a team that adds value and is interested will come along.

Bottom line—-there is no deadline.

Not entirely sure what you mean by "there is no deadline," given that there is certainly a "waiver deadline," at the end of the two-year waiver (conclusion of the 2021 FB season).

I gather that your point is that Commissioner Aresco has stated that the AAC could go on indefinitely with only 11 teams, after the 2 year waiver expires.

In other words, while there is a two-year waiver deadline, the conference doesn't have to respond by adding a 12th team, and thus doesn't have a deadline for adding a 12th team.

We don't disagree on that point. The conference could go on for years without adding a 12th team. All they'd have to do to have a sanctioned CCG is to move forward with an unbalanced East-West divisional arrangement.

.
However, many readers, including 65% of those who responded to a poll on the topic do consider the addition of a 12th team by 2022 to be a better option than going forward with 11 teams, for a lot of good reasons including balanced 6 team divisions, as well as adding viewership and recruiting regions, etc.

.
While it's true that the AAC could wait for years to find a school that meets the stated criteria (national brand recognition, etc.), it may turn out that the choices won't be any better 5 years from now than they are today. In that case, it might be better to select the best available candidate in 2 years and help them get up to speed - - if there is one that's acceptable to the member schools - - in the hope that it will become a highly valued member a year or two after joining the conference.

.
I also agree with the generally idea that there are only a relatively few schools that would come closest to meeting the conference's criteria.

But the word "few" is defined slightly differently by different people, and it's not entirely clear that Aresco's original description - suggesting that there were only a very few (BYU, Boise, & Army) - continues to apply now as it appeared to when he first spoke those words (last summer).

While the conference had an initial list (BYU, Army, Boise) immediately after UConn's departure was announced, the list may well have been updated since then.

No one seems to be sure, but many around here consider 1, 2, or all 3 of Army, BYU, and Boise to have more or less removed themselves from the AAC short list. Army seems extremely reluctant to join any conference after spending years in the basement of the C-USA. Boise & BYU have sweetheart deals with broadcasters and have little to gain from joining a(nother) P5 conference.

Many or most observers do consider Air Force, San Diego State, and Colorado State as at least potential AAC FB only members. All three may be more likely than BYU, Boise, and Army to have any potential interest in the AAC. The list may end there, but it is possible that the AAC would give serious consideration to a couple of others.

===========================================
.
So no, the AAC won't add a Blinn Jr. College or an FCS, and perhaps not any non-MWC FB school.

However, if AFA, SDSU, or CSU FB should express any interest in joining the AAC, Aresco could solve a number of problems all at the same time by inviting one of these schools to join as a FB only member.

-Balanced 6-6 divisions for optimal CCG

-Addition of a viewership/recruiting region

-Improved stature/recognition of a 12 (vs. 11) team conference

-Conference viability protection against future raid from P5s

.
One last point:

Aresco's point about national recognition or "brand" as a major requirement could possibly be satisfied by adding an AAU school with strong academic reputation. While most do not consider this likely, there are at least two AAU/R1 schools (SUNY-UB and Rice U.) that meet this criterion, one of which is a former member of a power conference (Rice U., a former member of the regionally dominant Southwest Conference, along with Houston and SMU).

Adding such a "brainiac" school would be comparable to adding a Northwestern, a Vanderbilt, a Duke (when Duke wasn't a FB power), or a UC/Berkeley. The only P5 conference that doesn't have such a FB school is the Big 12, with the possible exception of Kansas. All of these schools are strong national brands despite a lack of FB success, and Rice in particular would fit that bill, having filled that very role when it was in the once-dominant SWC.

Some have asked whether the top and middle tier AAC teams were better off having a UConn to help them build favorable W-L records, just as the Ohio States and Michigans benefit from having a Northwestern Rutgers on the schedule to trounce each season and they do have a point.

For those interested in a MWC team, here is a story on Colorado State. No mention of the AAC. Talks about P5 aspirations.

CSU and P5 aspirations.

You do want a state flagship with P5 aspirations in the AAC but you can't UCONN it here.

University of Colorado Boulder is the State Flagship University not CSU.

I said a flagship, not the flagship.

Hope you are prepared for disappointment.

So then you DO understand that CSU is NOT the flagship university in Colorado and since there can be only one flagship it can not be considered to be one of several or several hundred flagship schools in Colorado.
