RE: Kevin McNamara reporting Memphis in talks to join BE.
Memphis has potential in football and brings a top flight basketball school into the fold to keep the Big East one of the top two conferences in the sport. Also good history with NBE schools and pretty good market. Win Win. Let's do this thing. Add Temple and Air Force and THAT's a great conference with national appeal.

And so far you've shown nothing to prove that statement.

Memphis is better than Army in football, basketball, women's basketball, and baseball.

Memphis has a better television market and national brand.

Memphis has strong ties to the Liberty Bowl.

Memphis has rivalries with eight (current and future) Big East members.

You might be able to make a case of Memphis vs. Temple, but not Army. Memphis is a far better candidate.

I can't make one without the other. My original claim was that I wasn't thrilled over the move. That's because it didn't add up to my personal "homerun" scenario. The homerun I was hoping for was to add Air Force, Army, and Temple. Adding Memphis means we can not have all of these. Therefore, I'm not debating Army vs. Memphis, I'm saying that my three would be the ideal three. You're the one that chose to focus on Army. All three bring somethng that the others don't... they work in conjunction with eachother.

Replacing Army with Memphis would not, in my opinon, be the ideal scenario as the conference would be sacrificing a national following, tradition, elite academics, and some of the best student athletes in the country. Army would bring more eyeballs to the TV as people in bases all over the country, and even world, would be tuned in. More eyeballs = more money. As far as the liberty bowl... ok, I have no clue about that bowl, the relationship Memphis has with it, or how the whole bowl system/negotiations work, so you may have something there... I don't know. But I imagine there's gotta be some good bowls that Army/Temple/Air Force have a relationship with.

On to your points... Temple is the "B-ball priority" add. They, like Memphis, would bring in a strong B-ball program, but without sacrificing football. As far as TV markets go, Army's national following far outweighs Memphis, as well as Philadelphia (which Temple would bring in), so that point is gone. With the rivalries, once again, I don't know much about Memphis and their history, but my lineup has no shortage of rivalries either. We'd have all three academies constantly duking it on for the Commander-and-Chief's trophy. Temple should be able to develop a nice rivary with Nova in the other sports, so all three schools will add some fun rivalries to the conference.

I believe I addressed everything.

You're right, that's what got Boise in. The difference is that Boise is a top 15 team pretty much every season. Memphis and Army both lose more than they win. He argued that Memphis sucks less. I responded by making the case that the positives Army brings to the table still outwiegh them sucking slightly more. By me saying the line you mentioned, I was looking to direct attention to Army's off the field strengths.

For example, you wouldn't argue Southern Miss brings more to a conference than Notre Dame would you? Even though Southern Miss had the better record and was ranked, there are still other factors that make Notre Dame the much better add. The same applies to Army. I'm not saying that Army = Notre Dame (they obviously don't), just trying to come up with an example.

As for Boise, There's a big difference between making the case from a win/loss perspective for a top 15 team that wins 11 games every season, compared to teams that win only four or 5. I don't believe you can judge these things in a vacuum. Boise's wins overrides their weaknesses. I'm arguing that Army's strengths override their losing more than Memphis' strengths override their losses.

Boise State will find things a bit more difficult playing the schedule they are going to have to play going forward. You do not believe me I know, but you will see. Attrition is a tough thing to deal with; top 15 will not be as easily done year in and year out. I love what Boise has done - knocking off the big boys to start a season. And I wish you could of had the chance at the BCS title at least one time in the past 5 years - would have loved to have seen it.

Remember your roots, my friend; Boise was not what it is today even 20 years ago. You had relaxed academic standards, built a program and racked up wins in a so/so league.

Yeah, I agree with you. Don't get me wrong, I'm not arguing we're always gonna be at the top, I'm just looking at the past and saying that what we've done over the past decade earns us a spot in the BE is all. Things will no doubt get tougher and we'll have down seasons just like any other program at some point... but I look forward to the challenge of competing with the big boys. Should be a fun ride!

Army has a better national brand than Memphis. Army is in West Point, NY part of the NY Metropolitan area so they have the better television market. I'm tired of hearing the Liberty Bowl argument, last season proves how much the Liberty Bowl cares about Memphis when it took a Big East and an SEC team.

Army does not deliver a national audience nor the NY Metro market. Other than the Army/Navy FB game they're never on television. Memphis routinely is on television in basketball, and occasionally in FB.

What? I personally saw three Army games this year living in San Diego.

Vs SDSU, vs AFA and vs Navy. That's three more than I saw Memphis play.

Army was on CBS, not CBS Sports Network, the actual CBS, twice this year. They were on CBS College Sports four times and ESPNU once. That's seven games on national TV. How many did Memphis have on national TV?

How can anyone take you seriously on this topic when you make fuktarded statements like that?

Who cares about basketball? Army would be a football only add anyway.

Last I checked these moves are all about football and markets. I'm sorry if that's an "inconvenient truth" for Memphis fans...

I see Tiger fans have come out en mass to defend and attack anyone who questions the possible, potential, theoretical move.

Basketball value? Many of us agree with the value your school brings without a doubt. Regional rivalries? Most of us will let the UL and UC fans defend that point.

Telling everyone about the Liberty Bowl tie-in, potential football resurgence and the Fedex money? Worthless. It's like the Tiger AD saying the school deserves to be in the SEC. Let's see it and then interest will build I'm sure.

Also, I'm still not all that clear how Fedex plays into all this, they already denied any interest in "donating" money to a BCS conference to take the Tiger.

So Hypothetically...

East....

Louisville
Cincy
UConn
Rutgers
Navy
USF
UCF

West....

Memphis
San Diego St
Boise St
Houston
SMU
Air Force
Team X

The talk of the Memphis & Air Force adds are heating up.. So if they were both added- hypothetically the Big East is at 13 Schools...

At this point the last teams that may get the Call for the Big East are Temple, Fresno St, and UNLV- If they Change their Mind about splitting up their sports..

I think its very reasonable to believe that the next move for the Big East will be a football only add of a Western School..

Yeah but if the BE senses that Louisville will bolt for the B12, the scenario could easily be no Team X. Although I'd love to see Fresno or UNLV added, that's the way I see it.

While football is driving the bus, one would think basketball is still a priority in the BE. They are making desperate moves to add football teams because of their AQ status, but I hardly think they will sit idly by and go from the best basketball conference in America to the 3rd or 4th best without trying to make some kind of move. Just my two cents.

I agree that what your saying is very, very possible; however if the Big 12 were to pluck 2 Schools What Then- I think expansion is far from over, and sooner or later we could see FS/Temple/UNLV,etc..

I didn't come over here to attack anyone. Will I defend my school? Yes, just as you would. I just think it's interesting that most of the condescending comments about Memphis are coming from fans of the schools who have yet to play a single game in the BE. Go figure.

FedEx paid $100M for naming rights on the basketball stadium that the Memphis Grizzlies and Memphis Tigers play in. They also contributed $75M to build the FedEx Institute of Technology on the University of Memphis campus. Not to mention single-handedly paying for a new baseball stadium for the Tigers.

I don't think there is any question about FedEx's interest in the University of Memphis. They are one of the single largest donors we have. Not to mention that FedEx CEO Fred Smith's son plays football for the Tigers.

The BE would theoretically receive the cash through sponsorship dollars. FedEx is already one of the largest sponsors of athletics in the country. It's not a reach to expect they would become a major partner of the BE.

As a publicly traded company, you probably don't want your CEO going around trying to bribe his favorite school's way into a collegiate athletic conference. Hence, the denial.

Memphis attempts to buy its way into a BCS conference

By Jeff Eisenberg

UPDATE: FedEx released a statement through spokesperson Carla Boyd on Sunday refuting CBSSports.com's report. "While FedEx is supportive of the University of Memphis' efforts to join a BCS conference, recent reports that FedEx is offering financial incentives as part of this initiative are incorrect," the statement read. "FedEx executives have not had any discussions with BCS conference officials regarding conference realignment."

This is HIGHlarious. It's almost word for word what the Chootah State fans were saying about getting into the MW. Just replace FedEx with Nike/MGM and Tigers with Aggies and you're golden... 03-lmfao

I can think of at least eight BE schools that do.

Army still doesn't bring either football or a market. That is an inconvenient truth.

Army brings more of both than Memphis...

No they don't. They can't deliver the New York market and West Point is a tiny little town. They're not a draw nationally and haven't been relevant in football since the 1950s.

Memphis went to five bowls in the last decade and went to two Elite Eights and an NCAA final. Memphis is better athletically and market-wise than Army and it isn't even close.
