Well, he wasn't defending the guy's actions, which is what I meant, just arguing that he needed mental health help, and incarceration didn't help in his case, which basically is true.

OTOH, if they had kept him in jail, at least he wouldn't have been able to murder Iryna.

I agree but we need to be able to and use involuntary institutionalization more frequently. Since you live here you know there is pressure to remove this judge, although the mayor just got re-elected.

I don't know what levers the judge had to pull, since the latest arrest was for a very light misdemeanor (misusing 911) but a homeless diagnosed schizophrenic with no guardian should NEVER be given a written order to appear. They should be institutionalized and medicated.

It is far from racist to state "all lives matter".

I am done worrying that some may take offense. It is my little act of defiance in the face of evil.

RE: “I Got That White Girl”
We’ve done the social experiment of avoiding mass incarceration for the past decade and it has failed. This is not the first time, we’ve don’t through this before and it’s always had the same result- we last saw this in the late 60s and 1970s and it failed then also. There are just a small segment of society that needs to be locked up to protect the rest of us (and to protect them from themselves).

hopefully we can rely on the party of small government and states rights to keep that with state legislatures (where it currently stands) and local authorities to best handle.

Away from Cheetoh, Thiel and Putin, where it doesn't belong.

"the party of small government and states rights" is NOT the Democrat party. For now.

It's what the Republican party is, at the moment, but they will change.

People who don't recognize the people in charge are mostly scum regardless of party affiliation are deaf, dumb, and blind.

I wish that was the current republican party, I would still be voting republican. The current republican party is vastly increasing the size and scope of the government, and trampling states rights.

I was never referencing the current democratic party. The post alluded to trump and I was (sadly) joking that the former party of small government and states rights (again, the republican party) could leave the power of involuntary institutionalization where it currently sits- with individual states and local authorities.

So leave it up to the states, but they haven’t fixed the problem at all.

You don’t sound serious about actually fixing the problem.

What objective measures are you going to use to declare someone clinically insane?

What if Alabama declares every trans person to have a mental illness and put them on a watch list?

What if California tracks people’s social media and declares than anyone espousing right wing views is at risk and mentally insane?

You need some sort of agreed upon objective measure that isn’t politically motivated state by state.

Other than my two years after community college at ECU, I have lived in Charlotte my whole life and probably will stay here my whole life. I care a lot about this city its helped raised me and plays a part in who I am. Iryna's death is horrifying and disturbing; the person who did it should spend the rest of their life in prison. People were discussing how horrible it was locally well before any footage came out or it became national news.

My point in the thread is what is the solution to reducing horrifying crimes like this as much as we can. Many conservatives and some center-left liberals will argue we need mass incarercation, to lock up all the crazies and criminals to get them off our streets. But to others, there are more systemic issues that create these sorts of people, mainly poverty and untreated mental illnesses. This leads to the US having crime and a massive homeless population in it's cities. It is my opinion that you can lock up as many people as you want, but until we fix those systemic issues, these problems will persist.

Decarlos Brown is a deplorable human being and should be locked up for the rest of his life. Clearly, by the massive number of times he was arrested beforehand, there was a sign that this guy was a problem, and someone needed to step in. However, the city government failed to put serious programs in place to address someone like him.

Sadly for both of sides, those who wanna lock all the crazies up right now and those who believe in building programs addressing these systemic issues, nothing will change because Charlotte just had it's primaries and for the most part the exact same people got elected again and nobody is challenging them in November.

Until democrat leaders in these urban centers are held accountable for their lack of action in regards to cleaning up their cities, then the voters & leaders deserve blame.

Stop electing judges that focus more on equity instead of interpreting the law.

Stop electing the same people who don’t prioritize the people they represent.

There aren’t enough republicans in cities to enact change, that comes from you and your voting base. It’s up to you.

Dude there’s laws on the books for how to involuntarily institutionalize people. You’re made up scenarios don’t apply. Read what it takes in North Carolina.

People with a violent history who are diagnosed with schizophrenia and homeless with no guardian are textbook “threat to self or others”

No, not all lives matter. You murder someone in cold calculating evil and your life should instantly not matter at all.

Carry a weapon. Kill these monsters.
