Police in Auburn, Alabama, said Julie Gard Schnuelle, 59, was found dead Saturday in a wooded area of Kiesel Park with injuries consistent with an assault. Harold Rashad Dabney III, 26, was arrested on two counts of capital murder in the death of Schnuelle.
The Auburn Police Department said in a news release that Dabney was arrested Sunday following an 8:30 a.m. call reporting a "suspicious person," noting that detectives "made observations that led them to believe Dabney had involvement with the homicide." Dabney also stole Schnuelle's Ford F-150 pickup truck, authorities said.

Julie was a work friend of my wife's, prior to my wife's retirement from the school of Veterinary Medicine. She had been a student worker in her lab. Was renowned for having taken her credentialing boards the day after delivering her first child, who has now also graduated from Vet School, was beloved truly by all who knew her, worked hard to get everything she had, and who walked her dog in that park most afternoons. The trash who killed her was from Montgomery originally before getting a residence in Lee County. He stabbed her to death in a public park, 30 minutes after a wedding that was being held there was over. He apparently had staked her routine out, waited for the unexpected crowd to leave and killed her to get the keys to the pickup truck.
Our community isn't like the Hellhole of West Montgomery where churches have been shot up with automatic weapons fire, where honest poor African Americans fear for their lives and the lives of their children and grandchildren. It is absolutely a heinous and senseless crime where one wrecked wretch of a creature kills a very gracious productive one. Since Auburn is a university town it has a liberal bent among the faculty who live here, but they are currently shaken to the core. They've taken our solitude and safety for granted, not recognizing the problems of overdeveloping apartment space which the State bought up to place vermin like this guy among us. If you told them of the problem, they dismissed it as xenophobia. Not today!
I think it is time that we recognize that repeat violent offenders, 30-year-old gang members, sexual predators, only produce violence in others if they aren't taking the lives of the innocent. It's high time we place the sanctity of life of the productive members of society above those of its criminals and realize that making your world safer is a benefit for all, poor and rich alike. Predators should not ever enjoy the opportunity of another chance to hunt among the civilized. Either lock them up for what is truly the remainder of their lives or execute them.
It reminds me very much of a young kid in Columbus, Georgia who was gunned down on his mother's doorsteps for not joining a gang and who as 9th grader had college scouts visiting him for his basketball. When he was killed I told a gathering of the white community near the area that today it was the son of a poor black family who was murdered and that if they didn't get outraged about it sometime in the future it would be their kid that was being murdered.
The daughter of a prominent black boxer, was kidnapped from a gas station on S. College Street about a decade ago and murdered, by a black guy from West Montgomery who killed her for her cash and jewelry and her car. The white community in Auburn was shocked but there was no outrage like there is today!
Had they addressed how those perps were coming to Auburn for richer less defensive prey perhaps Julie would be alive today. If Auburn City police maintained a presence in each of the city's parks it would be a major improvement. The Police do a solid job, the cheapskates at the City Government simply don't budget enough for the population size when school is in session and the community swells to over 85,000 instead of the 50,000 or so when schools out.
We have too few to safeguard the children of so many. The campus police were rolled into the City Police years ago.
But this issue transcends Auburn. Look at what that monster did to a 4-year-old girl after parole in New Orleans. We as a people have to make a decision. Do we do what is necessary to stop predators among us, or do we continue to turn the bastards into cause celebs for political agendas. Let's protect all honest citizens trying to make a better life for themselves and their children, and let's quit worrying about the damned perps who violate everyone else's right to feel safe while out for a jog, shopping, or leaving a public building. This nation has its priorities backasswards and shame on the rest of us for not pushing the politicians who shelter these predators out of office for good. Let's relocate them to places like West Montgomery, Watts, Battery Square, and Little 5 Points in Hotlanta and see how long they last!
If we don't protect the least among us in our society, don't be shocked when those known to the upper echelon of society get murdered. To protect the one is to protect the other! And we truly are morally bankrupt as a nation if we don't!
We lost a great professor, a great person, and a friend to so many in our community and it grieves us. But it only happened because we allow certain areas in every state to be breeding grounds for the lawless and we do that because we don't care enough for the innocent people who live in those locales to do something about it!
