Dude there’s laws on the books for how to involuntarily institutionalize people. You’re made up scenarios don’t apply. Read what it takes in North Carolina.

People with a violent history who are diagnosed with schizophrenia and homeless with no guardian are textbook “threat to self or others”

Dude, there has been a concerted effort to rewrite definitions and what constitutes xyz now.

Obviously states would ENFORCE whatever the standard is. My question is, who sets this new standard of “insanity?”

Why not have a universal standard that every state must abide by to ensure that nobody slips through the cracks? Wouldn’t the federal government be a better enforcement arm of this new policy?

"the party of small government and states rights" is NOT the Democrat party. For now.

It's what the Republican party is, at the moment, but they will change.

People who don't recognize the people in charge are mostly scum regardless of party affiliation are deaf, dumb, and blind.

I wish that was the current republican party, I would still be voting republican. The current republican party is vastly increasing the size and scope of the government, and trampling states rights.

To state that "The current Republican party is vastly increasing the size and scope of the government" is factually inaccurate. It is in fact doing just the opposite. The only part of the government that is intentionally being increased from what I can see is the military.

The Democrats have been vigorously fighting his efforts to downsize the federal government in Congress and via Liberal Judges.

CLTPirate is certainly trying.

Other than my two years after community college at ECU, I have lived in Charlotte my whole life and probably will stay here my whole life. I care a lot about this city its helped raised me and plays a part in who I am. Iryna's death is horrifying and disturbing; the person who did it should spend the rest of their life in prison. People were discussing how horrible it was locally well before any footage came out or it became national news.

My point in the thread is what is the solution to reducing horrifying crimes like this as much as we can. Many conservatives and some center-left liberals will argue we need mass incarercation, to lock up all the crazies and criminals to get them off our streets. But to others, there are more systemic issues that create these sorts of people, mainly poverty and untreated mental illnesses. This leads to the US having crime and a massive homeless population in it's cities. It is my opinion that you can lock up as many people as you want, but until we fix those systemic issues, these problems will persist.

Decarlos Brown is a deplorable human being and should be locked up for the rest of his life. Clearly, by the massive number of times he was arrested beforehand, there was a sign that this guy was a problem, and someone needed to step in. However, the city government failed to put serious programs in place to address someone like him.

Sadly for both of sides, those who wanna lock all the crazies up right now and those who believe in building programs addressing these systemic issues, nothing will change because Charlotte just had it's primaries and for the most part the exact same people got elected again and nobody is challenging them in November.

Until democrat leaders in these urban centers are held accountable for their lack of action in regards to cleaning up their cities, then the voters & leaders deserve blame.

Stop electing judges that focus more on equity instead of interpreting the law.

Stop electing the same people who don’t prioritize the people they represent.

There aren’t enough republicans in cities to enact change, that comes from you and your voting base. It’s up to you.

Charlotte had a Republican Mayor from 1995 to 2009 for 14 years; the crime rate was the same or higher under him than it is now. I'm not blaming the Republican Party either, it's systemic issues that aren't being confronted.

this is not a power granted to the federal government and therefore reserved to the states.

We have a pesky constitution in the way.

It's not funny at all. It would be exactly what a left wing black ops (and I'm not talking democrat but foreign left wing black ops) would hope to use to incite a Conservative backlash so they could claim another January 6th moment for press and the remaining Deep State. The misdirection in the wake of the shooting including the old guy who yelled "I did it." and brought attention to the audience in front of Kirk instead of the roofline behind the rally, all of it smacks of a coordination. The scratched offensive messages on the shell casings, the plant gun all designed to mislead until the 24 hour capture window had closed.

It reminds me of the kind of coordination that happened in Pennsylvania where you have an idiot kid as a patsy with a rifle to draw attention away from a much more probable shooter who would have hit the President had he not turned his head.

I think the intent behind the killing was to silence Kirk for sure, but also to create a backlash to give the adversaries of our free speech and freedom to assemble another backlash to frame as the right's insurrection and a threat to "democracy" and all the other stuff they like to toss in to defray attention from their crimes.

I agree. I'm convinced this was coordinated and it was much more than one guy. The big question to me is, was it a foreign or domestic plot?

Congress from years ago (2016 and beyond) ISN'T what you were referring to. You were incorrect and are now trying to cover your tracks.

You used the term current Republican Party. I provided evidence of how the CURRENT REPUBLICAN PARTY is reducing the size of the government since Trump took office in January. Now you're just grasping at straws in attempting to save your argument.

Trump isn't responsible for all of the corruption and stupidity that happened during the Biden administration (2021 - 2024), and the Republicans didn't have any clout to reduce the size of government during that time - but you already knew that.

What objective measures are you going to use to declare someone clinically insane?

What if Alabama declares every trans person to have a mental illness and put them on a watch list?

What if California tracks people’s social media and declares than anyone espousing right wing views is at risk and mentally insane?

You need some sort of agreed upon objective measure that isn’t politically motivated state by state.

Every trans person does have a mental illness and so do the wackos who affirm and enable their delusions.
