They're not. They're involved in the college athletics business. The fact that players like Wiseman want to play under them instead of under the rulemaking of a different Chinese / Euorpean / Australian / Developmental league is up to the players themselves.

This is the sort of over simplified and frankly ignorant POVs that so many take in so many situations that allows for these corrupt systems to exist. Easier to just compartmentalize than analyze. Like someone working a mon wage job, “hey you don’t like it, find somewhere else to work. Go back to school, yada, yada.”
So basically tour saying it’s totally fine that schools, coaches, sales agents, product companies, administrators, employees, vendors all make bank because these 18 year olds could just pick up and move across the globe and play somewhere else. That its fine schools make millions and pay the actual employees providing the most important services for a fraction of the overall revenues. It’s really simple, in capitalism employees are paid what they are worth. Within two months of the Cali bill the NCAA already caved. The NCAA reckoning is coming, many fans will be unhappy as the have’s will further separate. But you can’t manipulate the market simply because you don’t like the results. If you do, then our core economic principles are compromised
You must have been enraged when athletes gained the right to free agency and stripped the owners of their ability to print money. I mean those players could have worked in the real world or went to japan to play.

Yup.

Actually we're kinda bummed. Most of us wanted to play Memphis at full strength.

Thankfully Memphis has already shown they can win without Wiseman so it should still be a heck of a year. 04-cheers

I've said since last summer you guys would win the conference, both regular season and tourney. I see no reason to change that now. You'd have beaten us even with Wiseman.

They're disgusted with the whole series of events. Also if this is truly Karma as you say, what will your Karma punishment be then?

What karma punishment? I've only responded to the rhetoric that's been spewed ad nauseum all year. I never stated that WSU was gonna "own the AAC", that we were gonna win multiple NC's, crown my head coach king of the land.

I bet Penny wishes he could have that 11k back.

No, you never said we were going to win the AAC. Just everyone else across the country. Who was and is the only team in the AAC that is ranked?

The Karma is you saying Memphis can't win with freshman and an inexperienced coach. Well how is that working out so far?

I'm not saying we're going to win the conference now, but nobody had higher odds to win it prior to all of this stuff with Wiseman.

Memphis fans saying we're going to win the conference was by no means a reach. So why the Karma?

The karma is a large segment of Memphis fans that poured over here after Penny was hired and said he would be a HOF'er, owning this league, and winning national titles, before a game was even played. Most of them were just the typical fly-by-night bandies that are now crickets at this place. Then you get posters like TigerBill and Tigers1983 who continue to carry this lame shtick where they can't make a single serious post if their lives depended on it.

And then you had a poster as recently as last week saying that Memphis wasn't gonna lose more than 1 game the rest of the way. That kinda arrogance just begs for karma to come in and stomp it out. And it happened.

That's all. Like I said, I've tried to be cool with the Memphis piling on currently, but this news deserved a few mentions for all of the endless garbage that plagued this place for months. I can't imagine how worse it would be if the roles were reversed. I think most of the responses have been fairly tame relative to all the crap that was flown around previously.

Ok. That still doesn’t change the fact that with Wiseman we would have kicked the crap out of a lot of teams. We’re still gonna win a bunch of games and Penny has turned out to be a much better coach than many of the trolls around here predicted. We could have pulled the Karma thing on you too (when Teddy got the boot) for constantly being a a$$, but no one said a word.

I've been doing 11 hour days here lately so I haven't been able to follow the situation but my thoughts are this: it really sucks for Wiseman because he's the only one truly hurt here.

If the NCAA had just told him in May he was ineligible he could have signed a 100k G-League contract and just gone and done his thing there...no harm, no foul I mean, Memphis' team seems to have come together fine after beating Tennessee, NC State, and Ole Miss without Wiseman.

Also, Wiseman is the reason Precious Achiuwa and Boogie Ellis signed with Memphis...so seriously, thanks for that James!

Maybe, but I don't know that we know if the NCAA is done with us just yet. It would be crap, yes, if they harmed us more. But we don't have UK, Duke, MSU or UNC on the front of our jerseys.

I believe Wiseman was only ineligible at Memphis because Penny was a Memphis booster. If the NCAA had made that declaration in May he probably would have signed with another top school for this season.

I'm not in support of paying the players because I don't believe they're employees anymore than HS basketball players are employees of the HS's they go to. But, I also don't like paying the coaches, admin, etc... to benefit off of amateurs. That's the real problem. It's not that players should be paid. It's just that the rest of the system shouldn't be.... and the money should be reinvested in the schools to lower the cost of tuition for every student.

I'm not ignorant of the work that these kids put in, but I'm also not ignorant of the benefits they already receive for their work in terms of scholarships and promotion of their personalities to professional organizations and sponsors.

When those billion dollar tv contracts started rolling out, the integrity of college sports went out the window.

This was the basis of Wiseman’s suit against the UofM and the NCAA.

Incorrect

He still received an illegal $12,000 "gift" so he still would have been suspended for some games (school probably wouldn't have tried to delay it and still okay the kid like Memphis did), plus he still would have to pay that amount back to a charity before being reinstated.

Players have been busted by cash/gifts even involving teams they don't play for.

Links? Citations? We're about to have some fun!

There are none because that's a straw man. 'Large number' probably means one.

I don't have time to dig through a year's worth of message board posts to find them. But since you have a lot of time on your hands writing books, go for it, and "disprove" me.
