Man, you are REALLY emotionally vested in the outcome of Memphis basketball. Sounds as if you will be rooting for our success right along with us, and for that I say, "Thank you!"

I am, I root for the whole conference to win every game but the ones they play us.

1) it makes our conference better
2) Tulsa looks better when it wins against good teams then it does beating down bad teams
3) NCAA tourney runs by other teams fattens Tulsa's pockets
4) Tulsa has been in a trash league and other teams success just makes it more fun.


Hell I want the AAC to win every ooc game and their NCAA teams to win games. I talk about ECU and USF basketball killing our RPI and Tulsa football screwing up the g4 record/narrative.

Hey Tulsa, if you win tomorrow, you will have the last win over Tubby at Memphis. If you lose, you will have the last loss to Tubby at Memphis.

That's assuming UC takes care of business if we get past Tulsa.

If my neighbor is an ECU fan and one day he gets super hyped and decides to paint his house purple and build a three story pirate ship in his backyard he cant. Do you know why? Because the neighborhood covenants don't allow for harebrained plans on ones home or property.

The same should be true for the American conference. We're trying to solidify our status as a major conference. What happens if one of our top basketball programs completely loses their **** and tries to hire a middle aged high school coach to run their program? The conference's reputation is put at risk.

There should be an oversight committee that can step in to verify the credentials of an applicant for a member school that starts to color outside the lines. All applicants should have several years division one experience as a head coach or as an assistant under the tutelage of a winning division one coach.

A bad coaching hire costs the conference and its member schools millions of dollars. Memphis fans tout all the great recruits they'll be able to bring in - yeah, in year one. What happens in year two if Penny goes 5-25 on his maiden voyage? That's right, his recruiting pipeline dries up quickly. See, he's hot **** now because he hasn't had a chance to prove his incompetence.

Everybody loves Penny as a HS coach because he's lots of fun and a great story teller. All the players and their parents know that one day they will leave Penny and move on to a real school in a major conference. Now they are going to have to consider Penny as their child's last stop before a professional career. The stakes are MUCH higher now and Penny has to show that he can not only win, but can develop kids into grown ass men.

There are exactly zero parents in the Memphis area willing to risk their kid's financial future on a team that is struggling to break into the top 40. I don't care how much Penny is loved in Tennessee, if a local Memphis kid has a scholarship offer to a top 25 school... they gone.

You see this now with Tubby. It's not that he isn't "going after" the top kids in Memphis, it's that he can't. They don't answer his call. If Penny, a totally unproven coach doesn't win his ass off nearly immediately, he will lose his current connection with the local talent and have to rely on his own "skills" to build the program, just like Tubby. This is the likely scenario that will play out. And if it does, Memphis is totally ******.

Again, players and parents love Penny because Penny was an NBA star and coaches high school basketball. It doesn't matter if Penny's team goes 30-0 or 0-30. If Jamal is a 5-star athlete, he's going to Kentucky. The same isn't true in college. If Memphis is unranked, these kids will get much less exposure. If Penny is a poor coach, these kids will get much less development. Coaches have a much bigger impact on a player's NBA prospects than many people think. Cleanthony Early, Ron Baker, and Fred VanVleet do not sniff the NBA if they don't play for Gregg Marshall. I believe that implicitly.

Memphis getting back to being Memphis is VERY important to the success of this conference. Tubby knows how to build a program; Penny knows how to woo young black men who are fans of the NBA. There is a MASSIVE difference. There are 25 coaches like Tubby in the top 25 college basketball rankings. There are zero like Penny.
