RE: Lots of smoke starting to show in Memphis
Tubby as a floor coach and development coach is still good. No one pays 3+million for only that. He utterly failed at the PR aspect. Barely tried. He mostly failed recruiting wise until it was too late. He is paid top 10-15. He will get 10 million to help him land softly. Good riddance

I felt that way until this past week. The well is so poisoned at Memphis that Tubby needs to go. It's not obvious to fans outside Memphis, but here are a few issues:

1. Quotes by Tubby:

"Memphis fans have to realize this is not the Memphis of 10 years ago."

"We are going to be a top team in the conference this year (2017-18)."

"Memphis fans need to learn to have patience."

Many more I can't recall . Maybe others can.

2. Tubby has refused to do much PR since he arrived. Almost zero. That has turned all the local media against him, and makes things worse.

3. Things fell apart in Season 1 when the team quit late, losing 6 of 7, and blowing a shot at an NCAAT berth, and certainly the NIT.

4. After Season 1, almost everybody should have returned, but everybody transferred out except Martin and Rivers. We had to sign 11 guys in April just to field a team for this season.

5. Tubby has yet to sign any Memphis recruits, although several top guys would fill needs for us. Until a couple of weeks ago, his only signee for 2018 is #337 in the rankings. He got a nice pickup late, Jones, #101 in 24/7, but still no Memphis kids.

He has so alienated the local Memphis AAU and HS coaches that nobody is helping him.

6. This season, we suffered our two worst RPI losses in 48 years, and the two worst losses in the same season, ever.

7. Our attendance has dropped from 12K with Pastner to 6K, and we are in danger of slipping low enough to lose our FedExForum lease next year.

8. Revenue is down by a couple million, and so far, next year looks even worse.

I could go on and on. There is much more. I have been supportive of Tubby, and think he should be given a fair chance, but no objective person can look at our performance and trends lately, plus consider all the above, and think we are definitely experiencing a program turnaround. We are staring at Year 3, with no end in sight.

Hell, Justin Fuente walked into a FB program that had won 3 games in 2 years, was at the bottom of the FBS rankings for 4 years, and had us winning, bowling and ranked in Year 3.

Basketball shouldn't be harder, right?

At any rate, given the publicity this week, which should have been kept under wraps, we don't have much choice now. Penny may be a risk, but he is a Memphis legend and our risk.

I bet our attendance immediately jumps back up to 12K, and other donations will also rise.

Time to take the plunge, I'm afraid.

1) It's not and you aren't cheating anymore, that means you need patience to build.

2) The local media was against him since the beginning and are the main promoters of the storyline he has to go.

3) Tubby corrected that issue which was the end of the nose dive Pastner put you in and was largely the result of Tubby being forced to keep Daddy Lawson who believed his boys were bigger than the Memphis program.

4)No, most of those players should have gone they were part of a dysfunctional program. You don't build your foundation on rubble. You just mix a little in to strengthen the concrete.

5)Your Memphis AAU are the cause of half the problems and seeing the extremes of your fan base I see where they get it. The Lawson's are all over this and are trouble. Tubby will not take local recruits until the program is established and running the way he wants it. He will not fight for control of his program with some wanna be local superstars. Memphis would be wise to follow this model or it will be held to ransom every time the next Penny Hardaway shows up.

This is the number 1 reason people want Tubby gone.

6) Tubby had 11 new players because your school had gotten things so backwards that players thought they should be in charge of your program. A rebuilding year from scratch will always have some wtf moments.

7) Did you expect band wagoners to show up in a rebuild? This downward trend follows the national trend and the obvious that Memphis is not at the top and will take time to get there. Apparently you have 7,000 die hards and about 12,000 general fans that fill it up when you're rolling.

8)Again pretty standard for a rebuild.

Dude, you always tend to misread me. I'm not making an argument for firing Tubby. I'm a Tubby supporter.

But it's a DONE DEAL. He is G-O-N-E. Penny has already been hired. It will be announced not long after we lose a game. If not, it will be one of the biggest about faces in history, lol.

I was simply trying to explain what happened that caused so many fans to turn on Tubby, and why the president himself feels a change has to be made.

Attendance. Revenue. Historic losses. Lack of recruiting success. Lack of PR work by Tubby. Risking our lease. So on...things a president has to care about.

Yes, for purely selfish reasons I wanted a Memphis win. USF will kill an RPI.

Now our reasonable chance at the NIT continues.

You don't have a clue. People make HUGE donations for season ticket seats. That's is the lifeblood of our revenue. Those donations have dropped dramatically and will be even worse next year if Tubby returns. You can only operate in the red so long.

Yes, he would be awesome. . .

He had a ho hum NBA career, never won a championship.

He has some aau experience and like 5 years coaching high school in Memphis.

Yup what a get. No recruiting experience, no college or NBA coaching experience, no compliance experience, no real travel or media experience as a coach.

Hell at least Clyde Drexel won a championship in the NBA . . .

Please educate me on the awesome history of Tulsa basketball and the incredible professional players you guys have produced. Maybe Bingo Smith from the 70s? Ironic since he was from Memphis.

Penny’s NBA career was stunted by injury, but there is no denying he was an amazing basketball player prior to that. Had he continued on the same trajectory, he would have been in the Hall of Fame.

We can debate whether he’s worth the risk as a coach or if we think he will be successful, but there is no reason to rip Penny the player.

Funny all that trajectory happened when he was paired up with a real hall of famer. Otherwise he was badly over paid for and won nothing.

We've had a few, Paul Pressey comes to mind but hell he has way more coaching experience than Penny. . .

You might seriously need some professional help the 1st time Hardaway brings a 5 star stacked team and runs TU off the court the way Calipari did. My gosh, even Pastner "couldn't coach" and "was only a recruiter" and he beat Tulsa like a drum

What Memphis coach hasn't routinely beat Tulsa like a drum?

I was simply trying to explain what happened that caused so many fans to turn on Tubby, and why the president himself feels a change has to be made.

Attendance. Revenue. Historic losses. Risking our lease. So on...

I'm not disagreeing with you, but none of those had anything to do with this.

There is no rational reason to fire him. Just a lot of excuses.

Your fanbase wants Penny and Penny they shall have.

You don't have a clue. People make HUGE donations for season ticket seats. That's is the lifeblood of our revenue. Those donations have dropped dramatically and will be even worse next year if Tubby returns. You can only operate in the red so long.

Apparently for mighty Memphis, two years.

And next year how good will 2019-2020 ticket sales look after Penny and his freshman get their heads kicked in? The year after?

How will they look in three years when you fire Penny enrage half your fanbase and can't get a decent coach to look at you?

Cal saved you once, who will you be gambling on then?

I see a long term problem and you see a short term fix.

Pretty sure Memphis fans show up just fine for NCAA teams, something you are unlikely to see with an inexperienced coach and a team built on freshmen.

Tubby

Try who has beaten Tulsa like a drum, Calipari and Calipari players. To paraphrase he isn't walking back in that door.

You can all rationalize this anyway you want, the reality is if Penny doesn't win big your program is done. You'll be an after thought brought up in Calipari's coaching resume.

Personally I'm not betting my program, even as little as it is, on a guy with no coaching experience.

This proves you don't know much about Memphis, which I suspected. You honestly think our president and biggest boosters, who oversaw our rise in football from worst to Top 25, bowls, championships, etc. would hire or fire a coach based only on what message board fans think?

Hiring Penny will cause our attendance to possibly double from 6K to 12K. It will stop our balance sheet bleeding. It will rescue our current lease. It will ensure we get the best of the recruits from Memphis. It will create an excitement level in Memphis probably unprecedented for a new coach hire. Those are all real reasons, not excuses.

It's a risk, but not a huge one. I'm out. I simply tried to explain what the situation is that even makes this a choice. It has zip to do with the fan base on message boards being upset.

ill start by saying im 100% for hiring penny if an elite assistant is there to guide him

but with that said almost everything listed here happened at UH too
sampson and tubby are identical type coaches, who are actually extremely good friends

1) sampson's not a great recruiter either...houston is one of the deepest recruiting hot beds in America and our team is almost exclusively out of state juco
a) rob gray -NC juco
b) corey davis louisana transfer/juco
c) devin davis indiana transfer/juco
d) starting center juco.
e) zanna nigeria/new york- mid major grad transfer

there are 3 houston kids on our active roster- galen (a legacy), chris harris (grades made him go to juco, we were the only one who stuck with him juco) and fabian white....
none of the houston kids we have were touted besides maybe fabian, who took 3 years to get ...and none of them were active in the main houston aau circuit...we haven't gotten an elite houston kid yet

even our big recruits next year are from Louisiana and north carolina

2) has made comments about our fans and program...like tubby, sampson is bruttally honest when talking to the media. he says how he actually feels

3) we have had horrible rpi losses every season, including this season.. his first season we lost back to back to 320+ rpi teams (which at the time, we debated in our forum if that was the worst 2 back to back losses in school history)

4) samspon was supposed in inherit an elite team, (1 5star and 3 4star) like memphis, we had an elite recruiter who couldnt coach ....and like memphis they all transferred out after we fired him.....also most of everyone on sampsons first team transferred out or declared aswell

5) it took sampson 4 years to finally get the ball rolling as a top 25..

agree on the last 2) this is why i actually think the penny move makes sense...houston wasnt relying on basketball revenues like memphis ..and houston was losing fans, didnt have ant to begin with. we had the ability to be patient

give tubby 4 years (2 more) and memphis will be a tourney team...like houston you probably wont be a elite local recruiter, but like houston the success itself will bring some decent recruits...your fanbase will be somewhat restored..8-9k from winning and youll be back to being a regular tourney team, just probably not as a regular high seed.. likely flying under the radar by the national media

i think penny brings a gamble but it could bring 13k+ plus back in 2 years, plus elite teams with tons of elite recruits and high media attention...if the assistants are legit ..memphis resurgence top a top 10 program could be there
and i know thats what memphis wants to be..tubby will never be that

Do you see me over on the Memphis board posting for you to keep Tubby?

The comment is perfect though, because I do have a dog in the fight.

You all f-ing up your program hurts the whole conference. The Penny hire reeks of desperation and hurts the whole conference.

You getting on probation hurts the whole conference. How much better would a full smu team be right now? Probably still fighting for an NCAA birth.

We don't need you to lead the conference in attendance for two years and fall off the face of the Earth for a decade even if I am going to enjoy beating on you and counting Memphis in the win column every year.

If you don't want criticized for saying stupid stuff keep it off the conference board.

Yeah not even close.

Go find a thread I started on Tubby, or on Memphis for that matter. Or even one where I bring him up.

You all come out with ridiculous stuff, like wichita's bench is going to win the AAC ridiculous, then get mad when others don't agree. Keep it on your board or expect other conference members to respond.

Of course if you all had a sound argument you wouldn't be talking about how much I post on Memphis or Tubby. You'd be arguing you were right.

You can all rationalize this anyway you want, the reality is if Penny doesn't win big your program is done. You'll be an after thought brought up in Calipari's coaching resume.

Personally I'm not betting my program, even as little as it is, on a guy with no coaching experience.

It's not your program and you have no dog in the fight. Let it go.

Sorry, what board are you on?

The AAC board.

You post more about Tubby on this board than probably every Memphis fan combined.

I don't care if you you agree or not. People disagree all the time. That's not really the issue. It's just you repeating the same thing over and over and over and over and over.

If you had a sound argument, you wouldn't have to repeat it a million times. I'm seriously starting to think you have mental problems.
