Congratulations to GCU and especially Seattle for finally landing their hoped-for and logical homes in the WCC. I hope CBU also finds a landing spot.
I have to think the Utah schools will now be totally focused on getting into the Summit League. Hope that works out for them.
The Texas schools will have to look to the ASUN or Southland.
Hate to think this signals the end of the WAC after being a fan of the conference for four decades. Conference realignment giveth and taketh away, and these days there seems to be a lot more taketh away.
Why would the WCC add a fourth school in So Cal?
I too thought the “for profit” was a barrier for GCU, but not something that couldn’t be overcome.
11 schools and if Gonzaga leaves, it’s 10 schools. Does the WCC expand or stay with 10.
If the coaches are still at their schools, WCC could have three schools in the tourney in 25-26! I put the qualifier, because the big east invited Butler, but Brad Stevens before they came into the conference. Now Butler is a mediocre Big East school.
Will be interested to see what happens with Cal Baptist! A 12 team Big West?
Might want to put the brakes on three. The WAC and WCC were comparable in conference strength and GCU would not have gotten an at-large. St. Mary’s eliminated doubts when they won the conference tourney as many had them as a bubble team.
Maybe GCU raises the WCC a spot or two to put them near the MWC, but there’s similar deadweight in the WCC as there was in the WAC.
Saint Mary’s was definitely not a bubble team. They were a 5-seed in the NCAA Tournament. The committee slotted them a full 24 slots ahead of the final at-large on the S-curve.
Of 226 brackets on BracketMatrix, the lowest anyone had them was an 8-seed, which is safely in the tournament. 0 brackets of 226 on BracketMatrix had them on the bubble.

Personally I’m glad CUSA chose Mo St. Tarleton needs time to grow at the FCS level. No need to rush to be in a conference of bottom feeders you can accomplish the same things in FCS. Schedule a P5 school get trashed and then play the rest of your conference.CUSA would lose a number of games to FCS teams it’s only FBS in name.
The only sake of argument is money it’s definitely not about your school winning.
NMSU has finally had a couple of seasons above .500 but they beat NO P5 teams. In fact got trashed by them. So, what does it really say about CUSA?
Not much

I hope/wonder is Seattle and GCU leaving causes them to reconsider the WAC.
Why would that make any difference? The best program and a top 3 program the last 3 years are gone so let's stay? Not a real endorsement of SFA if that is how they view themselves then.
I'm not sure what the WAC will do but hope it hangs around.
What would be a pro/con for the TX schools to stay or go? Same with CBU and the Ut's.
CBU is probably stuck unless Zags leave or BW wants to add them
UVU is stuck unless they figure a way to tag along with the UT fb schools to a new league.
SUU and UTech are fairly viable for a jump to another fcs league
as for UTA they probably would rather link up in the SL as would SFA
ACU I think has the opportunity to go to SL or ASun
TSU is most likely to figure out a fbs league sooner than later, regardless of it being a good or bad idea they seem hellbent on that route.
To add anyone the WAC will need to add 2 at min for league voting purposes. Non TX schools don't want to be in a league where its 6 TX and 4 non TX. I think the split will need to go 5 and 5. for the WAC to get some stable ground again I think.
Not to many options west of TX either unless you want a school that plays football in Central Washington or a school in Montana. Probably a deal breaker.
WAC could look at OUAZ or ACU (Arizona Christian) both have football I believe. Probably deal breakers
Why do GCU fans give off an aura like they are perennial national champions? It’s not that the rest of the conference can’t or doesn’t want to compete, it’s that GCU’s funding model is inhernently unfair compared to the traditional model.
I can tell you for a fact GCU was a large part of why they were looking to get out. No one has a chance to finance their athletic department the way GCU does. It isn’t about playing the best schools, it’s about playing better schools were everyone has a chance to win. I know for a fact SFA wanted to part with GCU (they aren’t the only one). I don’t know if GCU leaving will keep the ‘jacks in the WAC, but past conversations make me think the chances are better.
Hot take GCU departure (and to a lesser extent Seattle’s remoteness gone) will keep the WAC together than if CBU had gotten the invite.
NMSU didn’t have a hard time “competing” with GCU. In fact, we beat them like a drum. Don’t believe me? Check the overall head to head. If you don’t think you can compete with them, then you’re the problem. Not GCU.
You’d likely have gone 0-4 the last four years too. Congrats, y’all had history and brand recognition. No one else did and barring an upset, no one will again based on how they find their athletics, with men’s basketball double number two and almost five times last place.
As it is, they still claimed commish cups at the end of NMSU’s times in the WAC.
GCU got their gobs of money only in the last 4 years? Before that, when they were paying Thunder Dan $37M a year (all numbers approximate), they didn't have gobs of money and "unfair" advantages?

Ummm, they beat Auburn, not only that but they absolutely manhandled them. Auburn wasn't very good but any win over a non-Vandy SEC team is a big deal. Also FBS is about more than money. As we all know, yes G5 teams take in more money, but they also spend a lot more too. The exposure is the big deal. The expenses are basically a big advertising budget for the G5.
Y'all, like us this past season, are lucky to have one of the worst P5s on your schedule. Should make for an easy Big 12 scalp. If y'all can do that you'll get more mileage out of that win than you would even from winning the FCS natty.

Yes. Against Liberty’s former coach. A win that likely helped Liberty secure the G5 NY6 Bowl bid.

The year prior?
MTSU—45
No. 25 “The U”—31
https://www.espn.com/college-football/ga...mtsu-miami
Also not aware of many FCS teams that host P4s. MTSU gets Duke in TN next year. Liberty hosts in-state VaTech in a couple. LaTech has H&Hs w/ Big 12 and ACC schools on future schedules. WKU hosted Indiana in 2021.
And the P4 “body bag” games? Your payout is double. Forget 500k, you’re looking at millions.
Even regional G5 opponents are more attractive than FCS schools. TXST, UTSA, Tulsa, Rice, Ark St. (all of whom have scheduled w/ new FBS teams) are sure to bring in more attention/fans than OOC games with, say, Southwest Baptist or Houston Christian.
The scheduling possibilities in FBS are endless. Anyone who’d rather stick around in a flimsy D2 callup fb-only conference and the dying WAC is trolling.

With 8 teams you've got a Western group of 4 (CBU, UT, SUU, UVU) and a Texas group of 4 (ACU, TSU, UTA, SFA).
The loss of GCU hurts.
The loss of SU maybe helps in terms of travel.
Maybe Oral Roberts rethinks travelling to North Dakota in the winter?
Maybe Little Rock rethinks membership in a football league & trips to eastern Kentucky?
The WAC has proven itself resilient in the past.
Let's not write its obituary prematurely.
Maybe this group if they plan to stick together is find a league commissioner that is football focused? I would think BT isn't a popular guy in TX or UT currently.
I'm surprised the TX schools signed off on a basketball guy as commish in the first place.

Personally I am as well, but don't know what went on behind closed doors. I know that ACU was already wanting to bolster its basketball program after two trips to the NCAAs, but I think they allowed themselves to be oversold on the WAC > FBS song and dance. That was sold too fast and too simply, while there was still so much movement. SFA had already shown that having a recognizable basketball program, on top of a historied football program could really help athletics as a whole. So, I think they were also ready to take the chance, also being sold on the FBS dream. Tarleton was so excited about the move to DI and possible expedited FBS move they jumped all in. Of course, if Luck was helping to lead Tarleton in that direction, that explains a lot. UTA was already a good basketball program.
All I know is there must have been some really good used carsmanship going on in the conference rooms for the WAC to keep making the newcomers thinking that they were going to stay balanced in any way. That includes selling the Utah schools as well.

Haha, Tarleton... Yall really trash talk the conference that yall begged to get an invite from. Then shoved it down everyone's throats, that yall were certainly going to be invited. Enjoy slipping into the abyss of FCS football.
Abyss. Great word! The FCS abyss includes The Ivy League, the SWAC, SLC, UAC? and those elusive Montanans & Dakotans! What a very diverse abyss! How can we not be excited about a relatively non-competitive (dollar-wise) level of competition? Maybe we need to aspire to NAIA or non-scholarship FCS so we can experience a more pure form of college athletics. Ponder that! Anyway, Great Word!

Hold on, I thought the conference with Tarleton at the lead, was declaring themselves an FBS Conference.
Not much
Someone is not paying attention and making things up. NMSU destroyed, humiliated, and dominated Auburn of the mighty SEC.

My bad inmissed that.
So used to seeing the Wisconsin and Minnesota Azz kickings the Auburn win got passed me.

Of course we expect to get trashed. No one expected NMSU to beat Auburn. Body bag games are what kept NMSU afloat when we were an Indy. We had several seasons where we scheduled 3 of them in a season, got destroyed but were paid handsomely. We typically get $1.5M-$2M to get our butts kicked. Now that we are in CUSA, we only have 1 and will never go back to 2-3 a season. But that one game is great for our bottom line. And no, we are not expecting more Auburn beatdowns in the future.
