RE: Matt vs McCarthy
There aren't any Republicans that WANT to be speaker.

What did it take, 15 votes until McCarthy became speaker?

This could go on indefinitely.

They have to pick someone. Its not like they are being asked to invent cold fusion. The real lesson here is to do what you promise to do to get elected Speaker.

The Repubs have the same problem they had in January. Nobody can get enough votes.

It only took 5 or so Repubs to take down McCarthy, b/c all Dems voted against McCarthy.

GOP needs to learn to elect a Speaker that reps their voters. In Texas Dems actually elect the GOP speaker. They vote in a singular block lol. Maybe GOP should learn something. That's why the GOP Speaker is a drunk.

Ehh. The Democrats are voting against any Republican. This vote simply reflects the fact that McCarthy cannot get a majority of the House from the Republican Party. He barely had them in January when he was elected and his failure to follow through with the agreement he made with the GOP members caused him to lose the Speakership. I think its a good thing. The next Speaker wont think he can get away with ignoring promises to his own Party members.

The next speaker could end up a dem. It would only take a few people switching sides for that to happen. Try to go for someone more conservative and the some of the moderates wont go for that. McCarthy barely got it after 15 rounds of voting.

There is a reason all the dems joined to remove him. I can promise you it is not because they believe this will lead to a more conservative speaker. They aint stupid.

Any Republican voting for Jeffries is done politically. Nothing Ive seen among the current inhabitants of DC indicate anyone there is looking to give up power prematurely---especially to elect a Speaker they likely disagree with more than any more conservative Republican. We will be fine. The Republicans will elect a Speaker from their own and will move on. Its more important to get the right leadership than it is to align under bad leadership thats comfortable with more of the same crap we had under Democrats. Whoever is elected will understand they cannot make any promises they dont intend to follow through with.

As I said there is a reason every democrat voted to help Gaetz with this. And I can promise you it's not because they believe a more conservative speaker will be elected.

Crazy, but Kevin can run for speaker again. He's got enough support to make it interesting. Can you imagine if they removed him and he got elected again?

They voted the way they did for several reasons. One---they think it embarrasses the Republican leadership. Two---it helps to run time off the clock on the Republican agenda. Three---The Dems dont want to be in any way responsible for a Speaker they will need to relentlessly attack and oppose. You are completely misreading the Democrat vote situation if you think the Democrats have any illusions that this ends with Jeffries as Speaker.

Whoever the Speaker is to me is powerless. So yeah it’s an interesting story but if the GOP nominates someone else it’s not like they will be ultra conservative and the spending will stop.

I'm sorry but this is just all show. It doesn't matter what the House does, once it gets to the Dem controlled Senate and then to a Dem president, nothing Gaetz wants will ever make it through. He knows this. It's all for show and publicity and fundraising. Republicans have to regain the Senate and win the White House before any of these things Gaetz and most of us on the right want, none of this means anything...except to open the door for a Dem to swoop in and win the Speakership from a divided GOP caucus.

Once again, democrats act in lockstep, republicans drift all around. This is why we lose.

We are going to end up with a RINO or a democrat.

That wasnt even what was required. All that was required was for McCarthy to go back to normal budget process were the 12 funding bills were individually passed. Thats all he had to do. The rest is up to the overall membership of the House. Instead---with only one bill passed----McCarthy sent everyone on a 6 week vacation setting them up to return one week before the all 12 bills were due. McCarthy did this to himself.

This is exactly what happened in Texas. The dems choose who is speaker because the republicans can't get it together and vote for someone. So the dems run a republican Texas. They already have the game plan that worked.

Except in congress it's even worse. The majority for republicans is even smaller so they need fewer people to switch.

I do not have the faith you seem to that when the government shuts down and it's because republicans can't pick a speaker that a few of the moderates in purple/blue districts wont side with the dems.

It can happen in Texas of all places, but were sure it won't happen in DC. Tariff of abominations vibes.

They dont get a Democrat Speaker in Texas---but Democrats do get the opportunity to insure the Republican Speaker is less conservative than much of the Republican House membership probably prefers. Democrats could potentially do the same in DC if they can peel away a handful of Republicans---but doing so means the Republican Speaker would be elected with a bipartisan majority making it much more difficult for Democrats to paint the Speaker as unreasonable or extreme---which is not what the DNC or the Biden Administration wants.
