I've been working on a project combining the fans for college football, college basketball, and college baseball on social media. I looked at one that supposedly combined it, but I could tell by looking at it that it was wrong. My project has been very eye-opening to me, and I'm only halfway done!!! (have to take a break. My eyes are hurting from looking and copying all of that data!! I tried to do cut and paste, but it wouldn't let me).

You should consider adding hockey to offset southern baseball bias. Especially if you want to see whole picture.. might be surprised there as well. For example, looking at twitter, this is a list of schools that have more hockey twitter followers than basketball twitter followers: Penn State, Boston College, Minnesota, UMass, Bowling Green, Western Michigan, Miami, and probably all of the other non FBS D1 schools. North Dakota hockey has more twitter followers than many P5 football programs..

DawgNBama, for your project, are you combining total followers of the programs or is it more elaborate than that? Guessing there isn't a way to avoid duplicating fans who follow two or more programs at the same school? I suppose if fans are double or triple counted because they follow multiple sports, it would give more weight to schools that have a more passionate fan base as whole, which isn't necessarily a bad thing either.

Yes, my plan is to combine total followers of programs, but I ran into a rather interesting problem. While SkullSparks Analytics does not have a database of college hockey followers, they do have a database of college hockey interactions. They also do the same for lacrosse.

In addition, in a my project, I have focused on male sports teams, but there is data on some female sports teams too, and I may go back and add that also later.

Nodak, I will include college hockey interactions on a separate table with my overall follower data. I really don't know how to combine it my main project since my project is looking at audience size and not how many interactions they have had, so that's why I'm putting it as a separate table. I could change my mind though, and actually look up the top 50 college hockey program followers the old fashioned way, but that would only be for Twitter.

If you are planning to publicly release your findings, I'd be willing to track that info down for you. If you're interested, PM me with the info and format you would like and I could throw it on an excel doc or something.

Seems like, if they wanted to ignore the older crowd and just use social media, why not just count mentions and hashtag usage? Isn't that what those are for?

Look at the actual number of followers. Compare St. Louis City and St. Louis County vs. Jackson County.

It appears that they have trouble locating people in metro areas (your IP address is probably based on where some equipment is located). There is no way that there are 5 or 6 times as many Twitter followers in St. Louis City as there are in St. Louis County.

There are 65K MLB followers in the two St. Louis, vs. 27K NFL followers. There are 53K NHL followers, and 11K NBA followers. People in St. Louis follow the (baseball) Cardinals and the Blues.

There are those who still have their Kurt Warner jerseys who still follow the Rams. Who could they switch their loyalty to? Bears? Ugh as Chicago Bears like Chicago Cubs. No way. Chiefs? Maybe, but KC is a rival of St.L and upstart. Cowboys? Rivals in the NFL East. Titans or Bengals? Nashville and Cincinnati are somewhat physically close, but several states away. Besides they are AFC cities.

Rams will continue to fade in St. Louis, and Kansas City Chiefs may eventually become dominant if they are successful on the field, but St. Louis will be an NFL desert.

Now compare to Jackson County. 70K NFL followers, overwhelmingly for the Chiefs. 56K MLB but the Royals have not been regularly successful.

St.Louis NFL 27K MLB 65K NFL:MLB 0.42
Jackson NFL 70K MLB 56K NFL:MLB 1.25

Chiefs PR immediately placed ads around town when the Rams left. Hunt voted for the move, so screw them. Really screw the NFL altogether. Scummy organization through and through.

The map does claim that Stony Brook has the most fans in Suffolk County (Long Island), with more than twice as many fans as #2 Notre Dame. It also claims Missouri State to have almost half of the football fans in Green County (Springfield) Missouri.

In general, I think this overrates the popularity of FCS and to some extent G5 teams. Alums of FCS schools might follow their alma mater's football team on Twitter just as a school pride thing. But that doesn't mean they'll attend their alma mater's games, or that they'd watch their alma mater's games if they were on TV.


I'm intrigued by how Clemson gets 5-10% of the following in some really random places like various New York, Delaware and Connecticut counties, and even ranks as the #1 team in some Vermont county.

Is there any county without a single CFB fan on Twitter? I see that Terrell County, Texas comes awfully close to that with only one CFB fan. (Who roots for Texas Tech)
