I remember those days pretty well. I followed EMU WBB as well as MBB.
Remember us defeating I believe CMU for the 2012 MAC championship.
I watched EMU's game a few years later at TOL after which Ms Heady would be killed in an automobile crash. The game was on TV (think one of those DirecTV college game packages). Later we had the '32' game as I called. Still have photos that Andrew M. took of the players coming out of the tunnel with their '32' jerseys on.
Getting back to the coaching change. Lot of times, the 'next one over' in a successful program takes over. Will that be the story at Duke MBB 2022/23? Most expect Scheyer to be another Coach K.
EMU: We fumbled the ball when Braun left. We fumbled the ball when Verdi left. Although I like Scott, and he is a good AD, one can say EMU did fumble on Christian Spears. He was a NATURAL good fit as a MAC AD. The incumbent, next office over hire.. I heard he was not happy with the hiring process. Adios EMU.
So we were losing Verdi, Finley, Spears, etc. EMU has recovered with Scott, but WBB went into the toilet and can't get out. And as posters have been saying, I assume having a year left on his contract is the only thing Castro has going for him. Castro is essentially a de facto lame duck. Last year of his contract. Losing most of his best talent from a team with a poor record.
And going back 30+ years ago we had a president who fumbled big time.
Scott has done a great job working with Game Above and the SAPC and fund raising. But he was around for the cutting of sports. We used to bring in conference championships in sports like women's volleyball and women's basketball. Baseball has been a disaster. We have a lot of teams in rebuild mode both basketball programs volleyball women's soccer and yes maybe even football this season. We are waiting on the young and inexperienced and hope they rise to the occasion.
Yeah, it is kind of hard to parcel out Scott's handling of sports as he was tasked with cutting sports and trying to address Title IX issues. One of the bad things about being a VP, is that the AD, can get the s*it job of cutting sports. I couldn't believe the BOR simply played dumb and kind of like, "Oh, cutting sports and Title IX on the the agenda??" all the while trivial items are well known. The school president and BOR should have stepped up and took responsibility.
An AD's job is basically hiring and firing head coaches, dept. HR, fund raising, budget, compliance, scheduling, facilities management, sports info, etc.
As an administrator these functions, especially 'back office' functions, are delegated to senior staff who are responsible for day to day affairs.
I don't really follow EMU/MAC Olympic sports like volleyball, soccer, etc. (be lucky if I follow the FIFA matches this year). I have nothing to add about them.
Baseball has been down for a number of years. I have NO idea how to rate a coach in that sport at EMU.
Basically I follow the 'big 3' which are obviously FB, MBB and WBB.
Scott did not hire either C.C. OR Castro. Both were hired by Heather. Everyone seems to really like his MBB hire, Heath.
Scott's next biggie will be WBB. 2022/23 will be a very rough year and I'd assume Castro will be a lame duck unless he can pull a rabbit out of hat or somewhere.
I really feel this is like 2020/21 for MBB. Last year of a contract, lost key players, etc basically all of the ingredients for a very rough season.
I appreciate all of your info Steve.
It, to me, seems that the majority of the issues you bring up with Verdi actually comes after his decision to leave. If he handled the decision poorly, okay, I get that. And it obviously caused a ripple effect on the rest of thep rogram and athletic departmnet. But seems to me like that goes on Lyke more than anyone else. Was Finley not chosen because she had sour grapes towards Verdi for leaving like he did?
I have heard all of that drama before (players wanting one assistant over the other, etc.) and thought there was more on the table than that. Maybe that is just in the info you choose to keep for yourself (and that's perfectly okay).
Full moratorium on the season will be on its way soon.
I pretty well indicated what I know about the events we are discussing about Verdi leaving and hiring a new coach.
As I indicated, Verdi left EVERYONE high and dry with his abrupt decision to leave.
I do not know the details on how Heather made the choice she did to hire Verdi's successor.
My question would simply be, why not Finley? And this is NOT meant to be snarky, but why Castro?
What I mean how did the selection process go that Castro was selected and Finley was not?
As we know in the MAC, esp. FB, the HC leaves for a better job, and the assoc HC is usually hired. Couple of schools come to mind.
The sorrow is that, IMHO, we had a really, really good staff with Verdi, Finley, Thibault, etc. In 'hindsight' (?) that was an incredibly talented MAC staff. Normally MAC assistant coaches don't end up being assoc HCs at HM programs.
Last thought: An unsuccessful hire typically sets a program back say 5+ years. We saw it with Boone, Ramsey, Ron English (FB), etc.
