Depot Town has really help change Yspi's image.
I would agree. Nickle woke me up to that fact when I was bemoaning the Haab's loss.

Michigan Ave is a better venue than Depot Town for nightlife, sans the crime issue. Far better parking and such. Hopefully the EMU sale of the COB will invigorate it beyond Bobcat Bonnies and the Red Rock.

Think football as well, in fact they probably have had more problems there than in basketball. That said, let's be honest what we have here:
When Jim Valvano was caught in recruiting violations of questionable athletes, he complained that NC State was woefully incapable of competing with nearby Duke and UNC for the "best" prospects, not only great athletes but good citizens as well.
MSU suffers from a similar malady. East Lansing is not a "cool city" like Ann Arbor, Columbus, Chicago or Madison. It is a very good school, but NOT ranked in the top level academically with its B1G peers. It is NOT a dream destination.
U-M initially recruited the spectacular college player Mateen Cleaves and then backed off. I asked sportswriters why. I was told that "he was an MSU kind of prospect". That meant that he had citizenry issues and Blue was passing, because of the perceived risk, they did not want another Fab Five scandal.
MSU, however, has done wonders taking the "leftovers" and focusing on less than prestigious areas like Detroit and Flint to fill their roster. Yes, they had had problem children, but a lot of success stories as well.

Michigan's recruitment of Mateen Cleaves ended when "Angie Fisher's" SUV rolled over at 275 and m-14

I'm not going to contest your assertion Fan, it seemed too convenient after all. Nevertheless, MSU is forced to recruit a less than ideal athlete when compared to its B1G rivals. Please don't misinterpret my comments as to the fact that U-M is a totally clean recruiter, I have personally seen evidence to the contrary.

Apropos of nothing: Timmy Bond is still playing pro ball. Currently in the Dominican Republic getting minutes and decent stats.

Didn't this happen after he graduated from the university? I cant recall any incidents with Bridges while a player at MSU. There was the case of three MSU hoops players and a young woman with drinking that lead to a lawsuit. Those stories pop up from time to time. Football misconduct has been rather quiet under the new coach.

For certain programs like ag science and vet school MSU is top tier, the new McLaren Hospital right by campus will help with the medical field. Lots of changes with the Michigan Ave Corridor getting completed and downtown East Lansing has gotten a needed facelift. MSU has always had a higher percentage of in state students than U of M.

On target on all counts! That said, MSU stills faces a decided recruiting disadvantage with respect to U-M, who with decline of MHSAA sports, is also hurting as well. Yes, Blue got into the CFP, but I doubt that they were truly a Top Ten team.
Izzo has been quite frankly a "master" of accomplishment at MSU, his results were superlative. Dantonio was as well, as long as U-M, OSU and Penn St were experiencing coaching dysfunction, then all of sudden when Harbaugh, Meyer and Franklin got hired, he hit the exit door. Now Izzo is not doing so well either.
Tough place to recruit to. Are you likely to recruit some "marginal citizens"? Hell yes!
