If VT goes the G5 head coach route, I'd much rather go after Luke Fickell (I know, he won't be G5 much longer, so get him now!).
OTOH, if Dan Mullen does become available, he wouldn't be a bad hire, IMO.
I seem to be in the minority, but I also wouldn't mind if VT hired Hugh Freeze. IMO, that kills 2 birds with one stone - bring a good recruiter and in-game coach to Blacksburg while also eliminating an in-state recruiting competitor.
IIRC Fickell has never coached outside of the state of Ohio plus neither Fickell nor his wife have ever lived outside of the state of Ohio.
Anywhere he goes is going to be a huge adjustment.
No offense, but Fickell is one of the most sought after coaches on the market. He can afford to be extremely selective on his next gig, should he chose to go elsewhere. It's probably not going to be an ACC job (Notre Dame is on that short list, but I am not counting them since they are Indy for FB).
I have to admit that you are probably right. Fickell wouldn’t come to VT.
Napier does remind me of Fuente six years ago. I would rather take Clawson.

Clawson wouldn't be the first VT coach to have been a head coach at another ACC school, though Tech wasn't an ACC member at the time. Bill Dooley coached at UNC, and left Tech to coach at Wake Forest. He was replaced at Tech by Frank Beamer.

Imagine what Clawson could do at VT!

I want to see that happen.
If Satt's offered that job, he should take it.
He'd leave a fan base of whiny a** b*tches who are suddenly entitled, and he'd experience a true fan base, be at a real football school, in a very winnable division.
Hopefully, he isn't offered. It would be crushing to Louisville's program, and set us back several years, when we are truly on the cusp of a very solid football team.
I support this message. We can’t keep bringing in a new coach every 3 or 4 years! Brohm said no, let’s move on.

+1. I don't think Clawson lacks resources - this is his ceiling.

Most of Clawson's stops in his coaching career have come at private schools. That private school experience was a a prerequisite in Wake's search when Clawson was hired.
I could be wrong, but I just don't see Clawson leaving Wake Forest to take a job at a public University.

Shane Beemer beat Auburn last night so he may be a viable choice. But would he jump after 1 season at SC?

Why wouldn't he?
Go to a place he could be successful or a place where he has already reached his high water mark.
Who wouldn't jump at the chance to get out of Columbia?

It's South Carolina!
SC is the postal abbreviation for South Carolina.

Shane Beamer already said no. Maybe VT should have fired Fuente last year and taken Beamer before USC-e, but it’s too late now.

Clawson was basically created in a lab for the Wake Forest job. He’ll have opportunities to leave this year if he wants, but I would be surprised if it were for another ACC job. I don’t think he would rule out a big name public school if Florida or Penn State came calling, but his skill set is ideally suited for a private school. If he does leave it would probably be for a school most people aren’t thinking of like Texas Christian.
I think the most likely scenario is he signs the renegotiated contract being worked on by Wake right now.

I can't see Clawson leaving Wake. He's got his thing going there. Unless he's bored and wants another challenge, I can't see him jumping.

Clawson is an interesting candidate if he really wants a new challenge. TCU would be a nice fit, so would VT. I don’t see big name public schools (Florida or Penn State) having an interest…those schools live-off recruiting and donations, those are not Clawson’s current strengths.

This is a good news for WF. Clawson has a good chance to take deacons to the OB this year.

No chance XLance. Shoot, the way it's looking right now, LSU is going to really pull out all stops to keep Napier from going to UF.
