They may become the equivalent of ECU football - a program that failed to rise to the occasion of a better/bigger conference affiliation. WSU is in Year Five and the current trajectory is not good. It's another reason why I'm so thankful that the B12 awaits. The hoops quality in that conference is heads and shoulders above the AAC.

Yeah but we could become the Wichita of the Big 12

Yep, maybe the folks at Memphis are envisioning that talent continuing to flow into their program after Houston, Cincinnati, and UCF depart. Memphis may be back to dominating as they did when Cal coached them in a third rate conference to the national championship final game.

Only problem is they definitely don't have Coach Cal there now 03-lmfao

Uh... They fired Greg Marshall?

Seriously. That's about it. Without Greg Marshall, they are basically Tulsa without football.

I should've said a little bit more. Marshall's first year in the AAC was his best. He went 14-4 in conference play [25-8 overall] and made the tourney as a 4 seed [lost in the first round]. The next two seasons he finished 10-8 and 11-7 in conference play and did not make the tournament either of those seasons. This was a program that was supposedly added for its competitiveness and upside once in the AAC. That isn't happening now of course but Marshall's ability to win at a high clip started to fall after his first season. I also remember all the Wichita St fans over on the conference board who beat their chests when they first arrived on the scene. They were going to dominate the conference LOL. Now, there's only a handful of posters over there. My point is this is a program that hasn't lived up to its original billing IMO. They would've been better staying in the MVC in hindsight.

Marshall coached them 3 years in the AAC.

His first year was that Shamet-led team that, as you say, got a 4 seed in the tournament. So they were a top 15 type team. Pretty good.

The next year, they made the NIT. They lost a bunch of players and were mediocre.

In what would be Marshall's last season in 19-20, the tournament was cancelled. They were ranked at times during the year. They were a bubble team.

The program was falling apart under Marshall, but BearcatJerry is correct, in my opinion. What happened to Wichita St. is they don't have one of the best coaches in the country anymore. The notion that moving up a level to AAC exposed them is pretty ridiculous to me.

Wichita State had one of the best coaches in the country because they had the endless well of Koch brother money paying his salary. They have a nice arena with good fan support. One day they can make it back.

Yea... I don't think the AAC did anything to Wichita State. They were great the first year. They had a ton to replace and struggled in year 2, but Marshall still had them playing pretty good basketball all things considered. Year 3 was a COVID year and they may have made the tournament. Marshall was an incredible basketball coach but also apparently was an ******* that finally inspired mass revolt from his players). Maybe the transfer portal was his undoing, because players weren't willing to take his being an ******* when they didn't have to sit a year to leave.

RE: 2021-22 College Basketball Season General Thread
Along those lines of a meh Memphis and WSU and no UConn in the AAC, CBS Sports ranks the B12 as the number one power conference in hoops right now...

Quote:1. Big 12

Big 12 teams in AP Top 25: 5 (No. 1 Baylor, No. 9 Kansas, No. 15 Iowa State, No. 19 Texas Tech, No. 21 Texas)
Record vs. ranked teams in nonconference play: 7-6

Key Big 12 wins in nonconference play: Baylor over Michigan State (Nov. 26) and Villanova (Dec. 12); Oklahoma over Florida (Dec. 1) and Arkansas (Dec. 11); Kansas over Michigan State (Nov. 9); Texas Tech over Tennessee (Dec. 7); West Virginia over UConn (Dec. 8); Iowa State over Xavier (Nov. 24), Memphis (Nov. 26) and Creighton (Dec. 4)

Breakdown: The Big 12 is No. 1 with a bullet and I'm standing on a pretty solid limb with this proclamation -- both BartTorvik.com tempo-free stats and KenPom.com rate the league as the best based on their own efficiency data. In nonconference play it has shown itself worthy of wearing the crown, too, with seven wins over ranked opponents and two of its league members -- Baylor and Iowa State -- claiming two of those wins over top-10 teams. What's more impressive is that while No. 1 Baylor and No. 9 Kansas really help carry the respect of the conference on the whole, the depth of the league has held well with unranked teams like West Virginia and Oklahoma notching wins over quality power opponents as well.

B12 Tops In Hoops

The AAC after Cincinnati, Houston and UCF leave together with the newcomers? A big fat deflated tire. Thank the Lord we gone and playing in a big time hoops conference not last seen for us since the Old BE.

The Big 12 has been the best conference in college basketball the last half decade (as a whole, you can quibble specific years). The new Big 12 will continue to be the best conference in college basketball, and probably be an even better conference.

As cousin Eddie would say, "Clark, it's the gift (the Big XII) that keeps on giving all year long".

The Big XII was essential, not only for our football aspirations but perhaps for survival; viable FBS programs may continue to be winnowed out of existence in the G5. But the cherry on the Sundae is being part of the #1 basketball conference in the country.

And while we're at it, UC baseball coach Googins was on "Coffee with Cunningham" yesterday and said the American remains really good in college baseball--#5 out of 32 college baseball conferences. But the Big XII is #2. Are we excited yet?

Louisville lost to Pittsburgh. Biggest Kenpom loss for them in 20 years. They're going to be looking for a coach this off-season

Is Memphis the most talented (by recruit ranking) team in the country? If not they have to be top 5. Crazy they still haven't made they tourney in almost a decade and are looking like they'll miss again

They are absolutely out unless they win the AAC Championship now.

But this puts Penny in position for a career-defining second NIT Championship (which is good as gold a few miles down Victory Parkway).

Can we just agree that Rath and I were right about Penny? It's probably the one thing I've been as dead on with as is humanly possible since I started posting here 03-lmfao

There's the Penny issue and then there's the Memphis issue. Josh Pastner and Tubby Smith had issues there as well. It's not been the same there since Calipari left honestly. Most of us knew Penny was never a coach worth his recruiting chops.
