RE: 2021 C-USA Track and Field Championships
Grace wins the 10K - running just as fast to win without spending too much energy (33:50.06) - about 12 second win (50-60 meters).

I neglected to mention that Grace destroyed Cali Roper's old meet record - 34:30.90 (as did the 2nd and 3rd place finishers).

Not that I know of - pretty bush league effort by the conference.

They just posted the men's LJ results (we didn't have anyone in that event) and Jack Turner of UTSA (also the decathlete winner) is currently listed as winning with a new world record leap of 12 meters on the nose (39'4 1/2"). He shattered the old record by nearly 10 feet. Congrats to the young Brit.

And no just in case anyone thinks that's a legitimate mark, it can't be right.

ETA - they fixed it - he got 4th actually.

This conference is crap. I just looked on espn+ and like every other small conference has their track meet on tv.

Michelle Fokam wins the long jump (her 9th conference title - she should get #10 tomorrow in the TJ). Her best mark was 6.47 meters which is a new PR for her (although she has a longer, wind-aided jump this year). We also got 6th in that event from senior Teesa Mpagi, which was a few unexpected points.

RE: 2021 C-USA Track and Field Championships
Two Owls qualify for tomorrow's 1500 meters final on both the men's (Topini and Murray) and women's side (Forbes and Patel). We may not qualify a ton of people in the prelims today so any additional qualifiers today will be a plus (we should have 1 in the 100H and maybe 1 or 2 in the W800? - we may not have any additional men's qualifiers in the running prelims today?).

ETA - actually the freshman hurdler (Coutee-McCullum) must have hit a hurdle as she had a last place overall finish in the prelims. That's a big disappointment as she could have had a top-3 finish (and the conference leader from UTEP DNF as well so that race was wide open). That will really hurt our chances to win the title but it might give UTSA a boost in their effort to beat MTSU.

ETA2 - we could also qualify 1 in the W400 (and we do - Johanna Bangala runs a season best of 55.28 to qualify 7th in that event).

RE: 2021 C-USA Track and Field Championships
The women are not having much luck today. There was the mishap in the 100H, and now in the 800, Alyssa Balandran runs a nice PR (2:11.44) and has the 8th fastest time overall. But because how the meet is set up, it's the top 2 in each heat plus the next 2 fastest qualifiers, so she just misses out on the finals (the 8th qualifier ran 2:11.40). MTSU has all 4 of their 800 runners qualify, so that will be a lot of points tomorrow in that event for them.

To win a conference meet, you have to perform very well but you also need a little luck. The women are doing well but they may fall short on the luck part of it in 2021.

Jason Bugg qualifies in the men's 800 in a bit of a surprise (he only had the 17th fastest time in the conference heading into this meet). So now the men and women each have 3 qualifiers out of the running events.

That's probably going to be it for either team unless there is a big surprise in the 200 or 400H.

RE: 2021 C-USA Track and Field Championships
good news, bad news in the day's final event for the women

Rice gets 4th and 7th (Natalie Goddard, 4th, 11:01.59; and Maddie Forbes says to her sister you're not the only Forbes who can run as she finishes 7th in a time of 11:15.93!). But MTSU goes 1-3.

Entering tomorrow, here are the up-to-date women's scores....

1 RICE 62.5
2 CHARLOTTE 49
3 UTSA 33
4 M.T.S.U. 24
5 MARSHALL 23
6 SO. MISS. 19
7 UAB 18
8 NORTH TX 16.5
9 F.I.U. 16
10 LA TECH 6
11 FL. ATLANTIC FAU 4
12 W. KENTUCKY

RE: 2021 C-USA Track and Field Championships
My unofficial count has MTSU w 12 qualifiers in running finals tomorrow, UTSA has 8, Charlotte 5 and Rice just 3.

The Owls are definitely favored in 4 events tomorrow (both of Grace Forbes' events, the shot put and Fokam in the TJ). But we'll need to squeeze out other points in the field events (especially the HJ and TJ?) to have a chance. MTSU is not a sure thing - they only have 1 field event performer of note and she is actually competing in both the TJ and HJ almost at the same time - which will be interesting.

I actually think UTSA has a chance to win - their field events tomorrow are good ones for them. Which is an interesting angle to watch because they've never finished higher than 6th at the CUSA outdoor meet before.

Rice gets a 3rd from Andrew Abikhaled (8:52.20) and 5th from Hociel Landa (8:54.03) in the men's steeple. Both were nice PR's.

Top 5 men's teams heading into tomorrow
1 CHARLOTTE 60
2 RICE 53
3 UTSA 45
4 M.T.S.U. 35
5 UTEP 30

The men won't score as many points tomorrow as the women but they're not done yet either.

Nick Hicks won the discus earlier - another nice PR too with that throw. We were 6th and 8th (Brad Rozner from football team) in the HJ.

3000 steeplechase

BTW, I said Hicks won the discus and that was wrong. He was 2nd - but it was still a nice PR for him.
