RE: 2021 C-USA Track and Field Championships
Final day has begun. First finished event is men's javelin and James McNaney has a nice PR of 71.41 meters (234'3") to place 2nd. That also moves him quite a bit up the NCAA performance list (around 17th or 18th - he was in the 35 range or so before the meet). Decathlete Corbett Fong was 5th (192'3").

First women's final was the shot put. Erna Gunnarsdottir with an outdoor PR of 16.77 meters (55'0 1/4"), but UTSA's thrower Maia Campbell had a massive PR (56'10 1/4") to win the event. No other Owls scored so 8 points in the event for Rice (although we were expecting 10 or even 11-13 perhaps, so that's not going to help Rice's chances to win or even finish 2nd).

RE: 2021 C-USA Track and Field Championships
Much better results in the TJ. Michelle Fokam wins her 10th (and likely her final) CUSA title with a legal jump of 13.60 meters (44'7 1/2"). And even better yet, Maryam Hassan gets a very unexpected 3rd (41'8 3/4"). MTSU was 2nd and 6th, UTSA was 4th and 7th.

Updated scores - Rice 86 1/2, UTSA 53, MTSU 35

ETA - Fokam's jump was a new Rice record, beating Claudia Haywood's 13.57 mark which she set en route to winning the 1993 NCAA title (which I saw in person in Austin).

After the 800, women's standings:

MTSU 103
Rice 100.5
UTSA 77

The Roadrunners are about to pick up a slew of points in the 400 hurdles, but Rice is safely in 2nd for the meet.

Jason Bugg gets 8th in the 800 with 1:55.56. That might not seem great, but it is tremendous, considering the injuries he's overcome, and the relatively short time he's had to regain fitness. I look for a really strong season from him in 2022.

RE: 2021 C-USA Track and Field Championships
After the 400H

MTSU 107
Rice 100.5
UTSA 98

1st, of course, is out of reach. The battle is for 2nd. If Grace wins the 5K, that puts Rice at 110.5, with the 200, 5K and 4 x 400 for UTSA to get 13 points. They should not get anything in the 5K, and have just 1 in the 200. So they must get a 1st and 6th (or better), or 2nd and 4th (or better) with their 200 runner and their relay team.

RE: 2021 C-USA Track and Field Championships
Taylor Armstrong gets a surprising 4th in the 200 for UTSA to give them a 2.5 point lead. If Grace can win the 5K (with no UTSA points), they'll need 2nd in the mile relay to clinch 2nd by ½ point.

Also the HJ. Their heptathlete (and Rice's one as well) both went 1.72 in the heptathlon HJ. It might come down to who scores more in that event as to who finishes 2nd.

Good point. I overlooked the high jump. We finished that this morning in the Southland before the 4 x 400 relay.

But KC Nwadei has been consistent this season, so we have a shot for 2 to score.

Boom! KC Nwadei and Eliza Kraule get 3rd and 4th, respectively in the high jump - with 1.70 meters (5' 7"). No points for UTSA.

Grace wins the 5K in 16:19.82. That's not among the top 48 to qualify for the NCAA Preliminary Round.
