Tara Simpson-Sullivan wins the women's hammer throw with CUSA Championship record 66.01m! Perez was 3rd! Fey fouled.

It looks to me like the man placed 1st and 3rd in the Hammer Throw and the women also placed 1st and 3rd. All throwers are freshmen and/or sophomores.

It looks like Tara Simpson-Sullivan won by almost 30 feet and set a new Conference USA Meet Record by almost nine feet...as a freshman.

Perez had a little PR - none of the other hammer throwers bettered their existing mark. But Perez had the 7th best conference mark entering the meet and finished 3rd, so that's a nice bonus points pick-up for her. UTEP's hammer thrower on the men's side had the best mark but he had a bad meet, finishing well back.

I've got to say - I think WRC is downgrading the women's chances to win. If you do a straight point allocation of the various women's teams based on their top times/marks on the season to date, here are the approximate point totals for the top 4 teams...

1 MTSU 128, 2 Rice 110, 3 UTSA 106 and 4 Charlotte 98

Now that's not a true indication of how a conference meet will go because you've got some people who are favored in events who haven't competed in the event prior to the meet (perhaps the UTSA heptathlete, and Grace Forbes in the 5000 for example). But then some people are listed in events that they're not competing at the conference meet too. Plus people can be hurt or not at 100 percent.

MTSU only has 17 athletes at this meet, and if Forbes does indeed run 3 distance events, she's taking away a bunch of points from MTSU distance runners. Their athletes are pretty good (and pretty much all foreign) so I do think they're the favorites on the women's side. But Rice (and UTSA) can beat them if things go their way. Both Rice and UTSA have more athletes competing than MTSU, so MTSU really can't afford any mistakes along the way.

BTW, the men's side dope sheet is much more lopsided. The top teams there are (1) Charlotte 177, (2) UTEP 130 (and they're already down a few points off that after the hammer), (3) MTSU 103, (4) Rice 100.

Plus there may not be any live video this weekend? That would be a bummer - they've definitely had live video of the conference meet in the past.
