RE: ODU's perfect conference for you guys
People love the Cinderella matchups of UMBC beating UVA, but that would be replaced with something like Iowa State vs. UCLA. Meanwhile our tournament Cinderella matchups would be something like Stetson vs. WKU or NSU vs. Dayton. Not much national interest there IMO. All just speculation.

I don't think the P5 will kill March Madness and I don't think they want the hassle of forming their own governing body from scratch. They might push for a new subdivision of football allowing them to keep more of that revenue and relegate us to a new FCS made up of G5 and some top FCS programs though.

Not exactly. Our matchups would be something like Villanova vs Stetson or Gonzaga vs NSU.

Assuming they don't take the BE with them and find a spot for Gonzaga. I don't think it's happen but they wouldn't leave valuable property behind.

RE: ODU's perfect conference for you guys
The media's favorite schools (cough..the P5) have it made in terms of March Madness. How many times must I see mid-majors get screwed come selection sunday just for the committee to throw in some mediocre P5 program? Then the mid-majors that do make it in tend to be given a horrible seeding. So I don't see the P5 going through the effort of creating their own tournament when it's pretty much gravy for them now.
Football is the same way. Until there's a true playoff format and a viable path for all FBS teams, then the elites are favored as well. UCF did their job and had a remarkable season not too long ago. I think they were hosed when the committee gave them a final ranking of 7th? So unless you play in a handful of conferences, most FBS schools best/realistic goal is to get to a decent bowl game and be mentioned on ESPN a few times out of pity.
With the way things are, I think reinforces why it's important to be in a good basketball conference. Sure the "big boys" will still get the helping hand come selection sunday, but it does wonders for your chances if your conference is likely to get multiple bids regardless.
The A10 is a fantastic basketball conference. When you consider that and the regional locations of the programs then it's a no brainer for us.
It truly doesn't matter what FBS conference football goes or if we change to independent. Until the playoff format changes, the only reward you'll get is a random bowl and maybe a shoutout on ESPN for 5 seconds.
Yes things could change if the P5 breaks away and creates their own division. I just have a hard time seeing that happen since things are already in their favor.

ODU's perfect conference for you guys
Davidson, VCU, George Mason, St Joe’s, Dayton, UMass, and Rhode Island have all made Elite 8 runs in the modern NCAA tournament era. That’s half the conference. Has anyone in CUSA accomplished that? I think WKU made a run or two in the 90s but not sure if they got that far.

Working from memory (dangerous at my age) but I believe Charlotte made a Final 4 run in the 70's. WKU has also hit the Sweet 16 a few times.

UTEP won the championship back when they were Texas Western. Though that does predate the 'modern' NCAA tourney a bit.

UTEP won a National Title in 1966 when they were still Texas Western. They made a movie about it.

Charlotte, WKU, UTEP, Rice and LaTech all have sweet sixteen trips. WKU, Rice, Charlotte and UTEP all have elite eights or better.
But only WKU (2008) and UAB (2004) have done it in the last 20 years.
And while it’s understandable to compare the two groups, I’m not sure we should look down on schools for something we have never accomplished ourselves.

I'm curious as to thoughts people have about how recruiting would be affected if football goes independent. Personally, it would be a negative for me as I would want to compete for a league championship and know basically who I will be playing against every year. It seems that an independent schedule would be more unpredictable. Just my thoughts.

I'm totally with you. I think independence would be a death sentence for football. No conference championship to play for. No bowl tie agreements. No conference TV deal (yea I know). Less than desirable scheduling opportunities (I really don't want to play Liberty at all much less annually or possibly home and home). That has got to have an adverse impact on recruiting.

I agree 100%. Going independent for football is suicidal. It’s analogous to giving up. No way we could have attracted a head coach the caliber of Rahne if we were independent.

If we are playing Army, ECU, VT or UVa. And a Big money game, in addition to the alliance games, that’s a not a bad schedule. I think we could probably put together better schedules as an Indy, not worse. I agree the championship and bowl tie ins are an issue. Maybe they can be solved. Certainly we could have an “alliance” champion. And probably get at least one bowl tie in for that team.
Indy football isn’t ideal, but if it saves basketball relevancy, it’s worth it. I don’t see it as much worse than CUSA. Maybe even more interesting to fans

That is a lot of ifs with Army, ECU, and UVA. The VT series is stable for a bit but after that is done what kind of appetite will they have to continue it? Will the seismic shift in 1-A football have happened that keeps the P5's further isolated and more leary of playing G5's much less going to them? The possible scheduling alliance of independent football schools is hardly something that is compelling to me. As mehtastic as CUSA is, the conference does have tangible benefits that independence can never provide.
I'm all for doing something to help basketball and the other sports but if it means independent football then that something is a nonstarter.
