ODU's perfect conference for you guys - jaybird44 - 01-27-2021 05:04 PM

Yeh,if it were an ideal world with only odu in mind.

Odu va tech virginia jmu navy vcu-non football
East carolina nc state north carolina Duke wake forest

Yeh, I would like that too, but not happening. I believe my source, sun belt 2.0, here we come

I wish it would be aac or sun belt east app st coastal 2 Georgia schools liberty and cusa east minus Florida schools

East carolina and navy in american would have been nice though

Time will tell. They may be wrong, but we are not staying in cusa

Speculation from a Charlotte poster with "sources" that claims knowledge of a different move for both Charlotte and ODU together. I like their plan much better than Sun Belt 2.0.

Odd. Both of those links tell me the page no longer exists.

Drop all sport except FB into A10 along with UNCC. FB would go Indy with UNCC. Then you have 6 east coast teams as independent (UMass, UConn, Liberty, UNCC, ODU, Army) making scheduling a little easier, still would be tough. The A10 supports all ODU's sports. Could work.

Could the 6 Indy teams, create their own football conference? Or do you think the A-10 would be open to the idea of a separate A-10 football conference like the CAA with CAA Football? And hey isn't Notre Dame officially still independent? 03-lmfao

That’d probably be the best situation for us short of AAC. Anyone know if FBS football only conferences are allowed or do you need a core of all sport schools?

RE: Odu's perfect conference for you guys - monarx - 01-27-2021 09:45 PM

That’s why they call it a “scheduling alliance” rather than a conference. I guess we all agree to play every year, but hold our own media rights as independents. Then we get around the NCAA not allowing a “football only” conference. The trick would be landing some bowl affiliations for the “alliance”. Does it have a championship too? Who knows. If it gets ya in the A10 finally, I don’t really care. Do it! That said, Army, UConn, UMass, LU and UNCC are teams I don’t mind playing every year.

I believe you need an all sports core. I can't find the number but thought it was a minimum of 7. No football only leagues allowed.

The more I think about it the more I warm up to the possibility. I think the A10 conference is basically a perfect fit outside of getting in the AAC or above, and Indy football at the very least is an /interesting/ concept. I would want some guarantee about bowl affiliations before I would feel super comfortable about it (maybe ESPN finally sponsors a bowl in Norfolk? Indy Alliance winner vs whomever). And even if we just got on ESPN+ for every game, that would basically be where we're at right now so that's kind of a wash. And the ODU-Army game would be a pseudo Army-Navy game haha. Would be easy to sell tickets to that game.

I would hope that if this happened the move wouldn't burn any C-USA bridges though. I really enjoy being in the same conference as Marshall, UAB, WKU, MTSU, and Charlotte (I know it's rumored they'd be joining too but still), and hopefully we would be able to continue football and basketball series with them. And I like the rest of the conference too. I think C-USA is full of a bunch of peer institutions to ODU, both in athletic ambition and academics (save for Rice I suppose), I just wish they were each all at least 500 miles closer.

That’s what I was thinking. So could have a scheduling alliance maybe do some collective bargaining for bowls and TV but not allowed to have a title game, G5 access bowl, and will get even less peanuts from CFP deal.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/NCAA_Division_I#FBS CONFERENCES

This looks like 7 all-sports. But an FBS league needs 8 members. So minimum of 7 plus a football only would be allowed. Or as many football only's after the first all-sports 7.

I'd be pretty excited about that situation.

I'd be pretty jealous of you guys if true. A10 hoops would be a dream. But I'd hate to not have a path to the G5 NY6 bowl.

We pretty much have no path anyway, like once in a century.

And that’s pretty much the trade off. I doubt we’d ever see an NY6 anyway, so it easy for me to want to see ODU do this. Marshall actually has a legit chance to make it to a ny6 one of these days.

The A10 would be great.
I am still unsure what we offer them beyond dilution of their NCAAT payout - unless VCU is pushing this - which is a good possibility.

I am skeptical of football being able to survive as an Indy though.

1. Very problematic scheduling, which could still cause travel issues.

2. No media contract - even the paltry CUSA media distribution money is better than nothing, AND, we do get on TV some. We will be at the mercy of our opponent, and if we schedule indy vs indy we may not get on TV at all, and that could be as many as 3 games in a season. Lessening our exposure, even if just a little, could cause a ripple effect with recruiting, donations, and potential future scheduling.

3. No CFP payout. The Group of Five got $86 million from the College Football Playoff in 2019 - 70 million of which was divided evenly amount the five leagues

4. No bowl tie-ins. We will likely need to be really good to get a bowl invite.

5. No path to the NY6. And while that seems like an unrealistic goal, it should nevertheless be something we ultimately aspire to. Coastal and Liberty were both close to that level this season and they were not even our peers just a few seasons ago. Additionally, any expansion of the playoffs, or the creation of a G5 playoff, could leave us out in the cold.

UMass is hemorrhaging money in it's football program. With more overall resources than we have there is still talk of falling back to FCS or dropping FB entirely.

And this is the difference between a basketball school and a football school. We are the former as much as some folks want to pretend otherwise.

1. You are probably right
2. The couple hundred thousand we get is meaningless in a $40M budget. We could probably get that on our own. We could certainly make it up in ticket sales on the basketball side.
3. Not sure exactly how much we get, but it is more significant. Still think that increased basketball money would likely offset it.
4. With the number of bowls out there, I think we would find ourselves in bowls if eligible.
5. We have no path to NY6 or a potential expanded playoff anytime in the near future. Indy would not be the long term goal, but A-10 + Indy probably would present a better position for us to move into a conference (AAC) that allows us to improve basketball and football before we have reached the level of maturity in the football program that might permit us to compete at such a high level.

So, I guess it looks to me like 4 of your 5 points are non issues at this stage for our athletic program. The one point that is an issue is significant, but if a plan can be put in place to mitigate it, then it seems a no brainer to move to A-10 (if invited) and drop football into an Indy alliance if Sunbelt or CUSA are not football only options.

So, I guess I think

In the long run, we'd be on real TV a lot more in the A10 with hoops than football as it is now. The money we save in travel would offset a lot of the CFP money losses. For football media, we'd be able to negotiate our own deal. So perhaps MASN would show some games, LU has their own deal. The only kicker I see is the bowl affiliations or lack there of. That can be remedied.

As far as what we bring to the A10: another high quality upper mid major team, with similar resources, a large market, and a pretty good fanbase when we are good. Plus geographic proximity and a name schools in the A10 are familiar with that would help drive more ticket sales. We'd probably help bolster their appeal to TV as well.
