RE: And the ACC Schedule is out
Sorry if this is a repost but are they trying to minimize travel?
I am asking this because it looks like:
These five northern teams play each other: BC, SU, ND, Pitt, UL
These six VA and NC teams play each other: UVa, VT, UNC, WF, NCSU, Duke
And these four Southern teams play each other: GT, Clemson, FSU, Miami

I wonder how close Clemson and UNC are to signing their OOC game.
I imagine we are waiting to see what the SoCon does as far as The Citadel playing.
But the problem is they have Charleston Southern scheduled for Sept 19th (our TBA date). We may be looking for an opponent. If we do not keep The Citadel I hope we sign Coastal so it will at least be a FBS game. They are off that day, have already lost a game with South Carolina this year and are likely to lose more games since their remaining OOC is @ Eastern Michigan, Kansas at home and Duquesne.
If it can't work out with The Citadel, I hope Clemson plays Coastal Carolina too. Nothing against Akron, but that's such a random opponent for Clemson.

I'm assuming Akron is still in play simply because they were already on the schedule and sticking with them or The Citadel avoids having to pay two cancellation fees.
Also, the Chanticleers backed out of a game against Clemson in 2014 and coach Joe Moglia said he would no longer play Clemson because the wear and tear on his players was not worth the financial benefit of the game. He is no longer the coach and a lot of time has passed. So, I don't know if Coastal still has that same stance or if they would be open to playing Clemson again.

Moglia said that about playing FBS games when Coastal was still FCS.

RE: And the ACC Schedule is out
I think we've got the Clemson situation pretty well analyzed. It did occur to me on my walk this morning that UNC's issue is that they had probably tentatively agreed to play UConn on 9/19. This was the date UConn was originally scheduled to play UVA, but with UVA opting for VMI, this date became available for UNC. When UConn cancelled their season, UNC's plan was messed up. UNC could and can simply go back to their original opponent for that date, JMU, assuming JMU is still committed to playing this season. However, UNC may prefer a G5 opponent. As I've pointed out, Charlotte, App.St. and ECU are all available on that date and all have cancelled games to fill. Charlotte and App.St. both have future road dates at UNC that could be moved to this year at no current cost to UNC.

Thanks. This makes sense.
It’s still interesting that the plan effectively resulted in three uneven pods.

RE: And the ACC Schedule is out
Bold prediction for how the Clemson/UNC open dates work out for various potential opponents on 9/19:
- The Citadel at Clemson (The Citadel and Charleston Southern move their 9/19 game to 9/26)
- App.St. at UNC (possible move of 2023 UNC home game to this year)
Other moving pieces falling into place:
- James Madison at Akron (Matchup of the schools that UNC and Clemson cancelled on)
- Charleston Southern at Charlotte (To facilitate the Citadel at Clemson. Both have multiple cancellations to replace.)
- Furman at ECU (A throw in of schools with open dates on 9/19 that may have been under consideration by Clemson or UNC. Tennessee cancelled on Furman for this date; Norfolk St. cancelled on ECU for this date.)

And James Madison is out for UNC.

With respect to Clemson, perhaps they should just add The Citadel or Charleston Southern on 9/26 when all three schools have an open date. The Citadel should have right of first refusal, since they were on Clemson's original schedule. However, they have ten games on their schedule, while Charleston Southern has a only 9 and has an open date on 10/3.

Maybe someday they'll be in the same fb conference?

It’s still interesting that the plan effectively resulted in three uneven pods.
If the conference were allowed to go "divisionless" moving forward, this loose pod scheduling would work especially if the ACC wanted to require only 8 conference games and keep a 9th as an OOC option.

That’s probably why the two divisions didn’t work well for the ACC. I don’t think the four pods with 16 teams will work either. For the ACC, it’s a division less model or maybe three pods.

16 team/4 pods could work if the pods rotated divisions.
Year 1: Coastal: Pods A and B; Atlantic: Pods C and D

Logistically speaking, yes you are right. But the four pods won’t fit well because the ACC seems to have three geographical cores as evidenced by 2020 schedule. If you study the 2020 schedule, you will find:
These five northern teams play each other: BC, SU, ND, Pitt, UL
These six VA and NC teams play each other: UVa, VT, UNC, WF, NCSU, Duke
And these four Southern teams play each other: GT, Clemson, FSU, Miami
