RE: NJIT leaving A-Sun
We had a math lecturer pretending to be a finance/statistics lecturer who said the week before school started for the semester that he was likely coming (for the contract he had already signed), and on being told it had to be definitely yes or definitely no, he said it was definitely yes.

Then he was not there at the start of the semester and he said he would definitely be there by Friday.

Then on Wednesday he informed the program director that he had another position and would not be coming after all.

(He was the other visiting processor in my office, and I got to teach his Ag Finance class as an all-new Senior level prep with no warning [whoopie!], so this whole process was perhaps more memorable to me than to most other members of staff.)

Obviously his prospective future employer had better information on where he would be (presuming his future employer was foolish enough to hire him) than we had.

So when July 1 rolls around and there is no move, or when the Commissioner of America East denies it, I'll be convinced by the denial by the Commissioner of the A-Sun.

NJIT? Never heard of her. It's not like they are an up and coming school like Upper Iowa

Geographically and academically, fine with NJIT joining America East.

I do hope that there is a requirement that they take their women's sports more seriously. They are going to kill the conference RPI in women's hoops, their volleyball team is awful. Soccer is okay. And those are the only team sports. I get the school is heavily male, but they should have to put in some kind of effort in the sports they do play.

It's official, on their webpage. NJIT will officially join the conference as its 10th member institution on July 1, 2020.

With NJIT and Robert Morris making moves the AEC and NEC have almost mirror memberships:

New England: AEC-5, NEC-4
NY/NJ: AEC-4, NEC-4
PA/MD: AEC-1, NEC-2

They ought to have some regional challenges between the two.

Everyone plays each other anyways, and the AE considers itself a step above the NEC. No need to formalize that arrangement as far as the AE goes, nothing to gain.

Smart idea. I like how the AE is basically the public school league and the NEC the private school league. They got their Connecticut schools swapped but other than that these leagues have solid alignments.

Great move for NJIT which will fit neatly into the America East footprint.

Yeah, Hartford and CCSU both feel like they wound up in the wrong league.

Does this blow up that UAC plan the ASun had?

I would think so. 7 is the bare minimum for a conference and 6 is what they have on the non football side.

I said when the UAC was announced an easy way to end it would be to pluck NJIT

Yes, it destroys the UAC plan.
But NJIT added lax to get into the AEC, where it is now required.

I would think so. 7 is the bare minimum for a conference and thats what they have on the non basketball side. So moving ahead would be very risky even if the NCAA signed off.

They could work something out with the MEAC where they re-organize geographically for oly sports, and MEAC sponsors FCS football for any team in either of the two leagues. Probably too many hoops to jump through, and doesn't really accomplish the goal of a new FCS conference based in the Southeast.

So what’s the verdict here? The ASun commissioner was blindsided by this move (shown by their strange tweet)? The move makes perfect sense for NJIT, it just feels like they’re sliding out right before the new calendar season. All these bizarre ASun expansion rumors I think lit a fire under NJIT, and in the end it got them in their perfect conference. Congrats NJIT

I get why that'd move NJIT, but why is the AE interested now? Is it simply cost savings for its members by having more conference games or do they expect more moves?

RE: NJIT leaving A-Sun
The next most logical move would be for the ASUN to replace NJIT with Bethune Cookman who could put its football in the Big South.

The core of the MEAC is now in MD/DC area with Howard, Morgan St, Coppin St, UMES, and Delware St. Those 5 fit very well together and dont have anywhere else to go. Then you have Norfolk St fits in there ok but may jump to the Big South if they ever ask.

That leaves NC Central, SC State and Bethune Cookman. NC Central and SC State would fit in the Big South too but again the Big South is full. Noone is going to want to send the money sports to a one off in FL.

If the ASun and the Big South wanted to really push for the UAC idea the Big South could invite NC Central and Norfolk St and the ASUN Bethune Cookman. That would push the MEAC down a their core 5 plus a struggling SC state which may have to call it quits and go to the CIAA.

With the MEAC down and out I'm sure something could be worked out to have the UAC to take its auto bid
