New OC?
Plant (FL) HS head coach Robert Weiner has informed his team/school that he is leaving for an assistant position at Toledo.
Ryan, you hear anything?

RE: New OC?
Pretty much confirmed by the Tampa Times and Bay News 9...
If a done deal, a major shot in the arm to have him on staff...
An extremely good pipeline of athletes out of the Bay Area, and his record speaks for itself...

RE: New OC?
What is his background? Would not seem to be a solid hire for an OC out of a high school head coaching position unless he has had prior experience coaching in college. Not like a Gerry Faust hire to jump to a head coaching position at Notre Dame out of high school, but it does come with a lot of questions. May be moving others around and opening up a position for him that is other than one of the coordinator spots.
Follow up - looked to see what I could find on the internet and it appears as though he is not in contention for a Coordinator spot based on what I saw. He was suspended for 5 games this year and fined $5K for finding a living situation for one of his players. He knew it was a violation but did it in the best interest of the player. I can't place blame there, seems to be a principled decision without knowing more about the situation. His team was 0-5 at the time of the suspension (although it says all teams they lost to were either nationally ranked or made the playoffs last year) Says he has been a coach for 33 years, so not exactly a young up-and-comer.
Couldn't find much of anything else. Might be a great position coach - possibly for linebackers. But I would think they would want to have the new DC involved in that decision. Seems to be a strange selection on the surface, but too much information missing on the story.

Per Pete Thamel of Yahoo
Source: Toledo is hiring Tampa Plant head coach Robert Weiner to be the Rockets’ QB coach. He’s a fixture in Florida having coached Aaron Murray, Robert Marve and Philip Ely. Toledo HC Jason Candle will take over the OC job and remain the play caller.

That's why I didn't think OC would be that much of a stretch since Candle has been calling the plays and would likely continue to do so. But just QB coach also makes sense.

RE: New OC?
My first reaction is that this may be a good move. Will it free up more money to pay the DC and other assistants? Will UT go on a fund drive for the athletic department to raise money for the programs? Even with the large alumni base and the community as a whole, I would bet the fund raising for UT has been sliding downward. This past year certainly did not help.
This new addition - being a seasoned coach and working with top level talent in HS, may be a very positive step. It all depends on his personality and how he motivates players. Same will be true of the DC we hire. Needs to be an aggressive, young Tom Amstutz type of coach.
Although this announcement has some good to it, not sure I like Candle calling the plays. He better be training someone to be his conscience when things get hectic. Someone that can check him down by having a better view from the tower of the defense. Wasn't real impressed with the play calling this past year. To find out he was doing the play calling is disheartening - to say the least. What was the OC doing?

Yep. May also help ensure his son ends up at UT - and hopefully with a scholly. Can't wait to hear his assessment and thoughts on the decision. That will be about as close to first hand knowledge as we could hope for...

JC has been the play caller since he's been HC.

RE: New OC?
I’ve been sitting on this one for a few days now. Coach just notified the team earlier today and I did not want to say anything until it had been confirmed. The team was not told what school he was going to and that the school would have an announcement on Monday. Obviously, the word has somehow gotten out, so I guess I can discuss it now.
1st off...I could not be more excited to have Coach Weiner at UT. IMO this is a huge win for the Rockets. He is an amazing man...football aside, the players will leave UT as better people having been exposed to Coach Weiner. He is very meticulous in his preparation and in his messaging to the team. When my son decided to give up baseball and pursue football, I was aprehensive. I knew he could play baseball at the college level and thought he may have been making a mistake. However, I knew that Dylan would learn life lessons through Coach, that would last a lifetime. After 2 years in his program, I can say that my expectations of how my son would benefit were not only met, but exceeded. Coach does not play favorites...sure he has closer bonds with certain players, but everyone from the star QB to the kid who will never step foot on the field, is treated with dignity and respect.
Coach Weiner’s record speaks for itself...4 state championships, 2 state runners up, 13-14 district titles in 16 years. This past season was not what anyone expected and we struggled out of the gate 0-6. As Moto mentioned, Coach was suspended for a “recruuting” violation. I’m not going to get into the particulars, other than it was a BS charge. A kid that had transferred to Plant, found himself homeless during the season and Coach reached out to local families to find him a home. Keep in mind...the player had not been ruled eligible and we were already 0-5 when this ruling came down. It’s not as though we played with an ineligible player. As luck would have it, the player in question was ruled eligible the same week that Weiner was suspended. Coach will always do the right thing by his players.
I can say that this PWO opportunity that Dylan has is now much more attractive. We’re hopeful that he will receive a full ride somewhere, but if that does not happen, we can’t think of a better atmosphere to get a PWO shot. Ex HC will be there, along with his being at his old mans Alma Mater...pretty cool. Coach really wants him to follow him up there...fingers crossed that it will happen.

RE: New OC?
Also...he’s coached the following QB’s at Plant:
Robert Marve (The U & Purdue)
Aaron Murray (Georgia)
Ely (Bama & UT)
Tucker Gleason (Just signed with GaTech)
He can coach and develop QB’s...and he’ll definitely have a hand in the play calling

RE: New OC?
Sounds like a good hire, but ...
I don't like the idea of Candle formally taking on OC. Seems to me this is his way of formally saying he is not going to spend any time at all head-coaching the defensive side of the team. That doesn't bode well to me, but I guess it will depend on what happens with new defensive coaches.

RE: New OC?
So the OC that left to be head coach was not calling plays.
Makes you wonder how he got the gig. What did he do?
If the guy wins in Florida then he can coach. Wondering if we created the vacancy to get the guy. D2 jobs are always open
