RE: New OC?
OC has to design the whole game plan during the week, based on the scouting reports of the opponent. Calling the individual plays should be the easier part, if the game plan is successfully put together in the first place.

Gotta love anybody named Misty Winter. We should’ve hired her, too.

I don't like the idea of Candle formally taking on OC. Seems to me this is his way of formally saying he is not going to spend any time at all head-coaching the defensive side of the team. That doesn't bode well to me, but I guess it will depend on what happens with new defensive coaches.

I think that Candle knows he has to right the ship and he feels that he needs more control of the offense. And it frees up more money to bring in a quality DC.

Will UT go on a fund drive for the athletic department to raise money for the programs? Even with the large alumni base and the community as a whole, I would bet the fund raising for UT has been sliding downward. This past year certainly did not help.

This new addition - being a seasoned coach and working with top level talent in HS, may be a very positive step. It all depends on his personality and how he motivates players. Same will be true of the DC we hire. Needs to be an aggressive, young Tom Amstutz type of coach.

Although this announcement has some good to it, not sure I like Candle calling the plays. He better be training someone to be his conscience when things get hectic. Someone that can check him down by having a better view from the tower of the defense. Wasn't real impressed with the play calling this past year. To find out he was doing the play calling is disheartening - to say the least. What was the OC doing?

UT is about to launch major capital funding raising campaign and UT Athletics will be big part of that, hard to say what impact of 2019 football season has been but interesting if you look at last UT Foundation annual report for FY19, allocations of donations designated to UT Athletics is actually small compared to academic scholarships and other designations. Not sure if that is a recent trend, but those annual reports are public if someone wants to review them, may be surprised that within total fund raising at UT, athletics is not as large as one might think.

Not good. Any measures that compare athletic funding among members of the MAC? Interested to know who is doing the best - and what they have done to fund at the highest level of the MAC schools. Maybe UT is the highest. More than likely, the highest amount will come from major donors that have done very well in specific businesses. Seems like Marshall always had heavy donations from businesses in and around Huntington, including those that paid the players $50/hour to do nothing for 4 hours each Saturday during the offseason....

From FY 2010-2019 a total of $333 million was donated to UT, 2% ($7.5m) designated by donors to UT Athletics, in FY 2019 the UT Foundation gave total of $22m support to UT, of which 22% was to UT Athletics, Important to note that from FY 2010-2019 $11.6m was designated for capital projects (buildings) which could have included UT Athletic facilities.

Well Toledo needed a quarterbacks coach. Hopefully this guy is up to the task. Perhaps he's a diamond in the rough. I'm sure the recruiting perks were a big sale, but maybe he would make a potential future head coach. As for Candle being the OC, I don't know.

Agree with your sentiment on him taking on the OC role. It just doesn't pass the smell test for a guy that was named as the head coach - and he wants to retain his former responsibilities. Gives the impression he thinks no one else can do the job as well as he can, but it really takes a huge chunk of time away from his job of being head coach - which includes spending time with the defense, position coaches, special teams, etc., etc. I suppose it could be viewed as a positive if he is ok with delegating that responsibility to the DC and the position coaches - but since we don't have a DC yet, not sure how far along in the process he is in finding one that he can have total trust in to do the job. Hope he is confident he has someone in mind that can do that job. Like I said before, a young Tom Amstutz level of enthusiasm with the wisdom he had in 2000 and the same recruiting skills would be a perfect fit. Who wouldn't want to see the DC come sprinting out of the Larimar complex and doing a belly slide across the field on a rain soaked turf? Or a guy sitting up in the press box at State College, Pa. punching the sky after another Frank Ofili sack?

From what I’m told, Coach Weiner will be the QB coach & OC...perhaps it’s a dual role with Candle?

That would be my guess. We were told QB coach & OC, so who knows. I really like this move for obvious reasons...he is a great man...I’m excited to see how he transitions to the college game. He is a legend in FL...there is so much talent down here. He could really help us land some hidden gems.

Seems to be the trend lately to have a passing game coordinator and a running game coordinator instead of just one OC. Wouldn't be surprised if Weiner is brought in to be passing coordinator as well if he is going to be the QB coach.

RE: New OC?
You guys may find this interesting. When Candle was the OC under Cambell, he was constantly over ruled by Matt at key periods. If you recall there would be many times we couldn’t get a call in or would have a delay if game or would need to burn a timeout with the players looking to the sideline. Well the first game that Candle was able to call a game completely unobstructed was our Bowl win over Temple in Boca. If you recall, that was the smoothest flowing game I remember in many years. Maybe coach has tried to share duties with an OC, but has had similar battles at critical times. It has seemed like we have had similar situations in games where we could not get a play in quickly- especially in red zone or critical times of key games. Maybe this will be a good thing where Jason will not be second guessed on a call. Hopefully we get a great DC that can turn around our defense and give us some long over due swagger back on that side of the ball. We need a more aggressive scheme and no bend but not break philosophy. In this league we need to play man coverage, get after the QB, contain the edges to force the QB up in the pocket, have a spy in the middle for any WB that is a running threat, and mix in corner blitzes to keep the honest. I hate our Defense over the past decade. Too soft, too predictable, and way too much cushion on the WRs. Also, zone does not work in this league. Too many good QBs that will pick us apart when given time. Good Defense is a simple function of physics, smarts, and containment. When you can rush the QB and make him uncomfortable not knowing where that blitz might be coming you have developed a great advantage both physically and mentally. Also, I don’t think oir defensive coaches adjust their personnel and game plan to each opponents strength and weakness each week. What I mean by this is that you need to study each team and plan to take away their strength and force or challenge them to beat you with their weakness. For example, when we play a team with a great running QB like NIU typically has- force him to pass to beat us. How many times have we lost to them this past decade by sending three or four guys at the QB, while they send their WR down the field; we have no one in the middle, and the QB essentially waits and runs a delay u the middle I’m touched for 40 yards. We need a DC that looks at each opponent and adjusts the game plan to take away what the opponent does best. I think many of our former DC stick to what they have always done because that is all they know or they are so egotistical that they feel that “we are going to do what we do”. Great DCs and OCs for that matter adjust every game to the opponent and look to take away a teams steength. If o was DC or OC, I would approach each game like a battle in a war. How can we efficiently and effectively take away their strength and put them in a vulnerable position in every situation. Our DEs need to be dusciplined on the edges as well, as we have been burned by QBs because we did not hold the edge and contain.

Long post- I got on a roll. Lol. 2020 will be our year! GO ROCKETS!!!

I hope you're right. I totally agree with you about the job Candle did in the Boca Bowl. That was the best I'd seen Toledo look in a long time and Candle did a phenomenal job of coaching. Before that I wasn't completely sold on Candle and was hoping for a national search for our next head coach. I'm more concerned about the defense than offense and hope we get a winner on that side of the ball. I'll be interested to see what the new qb coach does. I thought it was a mistake not having Peters as #2 if not 1b. That had to be a blow to his confidence and clearly he was a more experienced player than Bradley. He could do quicker reads and knew how to go through his progressions.

That team should have been undefeated. Too much
going on with staff that took the focus off the field.
Just look at the Rocket FB talent.

Long post- I got on a roll. Lol. 2020 will be our year! GO ROCKETS!!!

I shortened it to the biggest issue you covered...Couldn't agree more on this. Hard to believe it has been 20 years since we had a defense that had exactly those characteristics.

Go back to 2000: Penn State - 6 points (24-6). Marshall shut out (42-0). Central Michigan shut out (41-0); Weber State shut out (52-0 - amazingly similar to Murray State in 2019), Tony Romo and Eastern Ill. got us for 26 (31-26) and that was the most points given up that season by Toledo. In the only loss - we give up 21 to Western Mich (who then gets beat in the MACC by Marshall).

We gave up 125 points in 11 games that year - just over 11 ppg. Now we give that up with 5 minutes left in the 1st quarter... Last 3 games of 2019 - we gave up 129 points (43 ppg). For the season - 386 points, or 35.1 ppg in 11 games (if you ignore FCS Murray State where we got a shut out).

2000 - 125 in 11 games (11 ppg) (10-1 on season)
2001 - 297 in 12 games (25 ppg) Championship year (10-2 on season)
2002 - 406 in 14 games (29 ppg) (9-5 on season including MACC loss and bowl loss in which we gave up 100 points combined in those 2 games)
2003 - 285 in 12 games (24 ppg) (8-4 on season)
2004 - 404 in 13 games (31 ppg) Championship year (126 points in first 2 games); then only 25 ppg thereafter). (9-4 on season) Including bowl loss.
2005 - 261 in 12 games (22 ppg) (9-3 on the season)
2006 - 332 in 12 games (28 ppg) (5-7 on the season)
2007 - 470 in 12 games (39 ppg) (5-7 on the season)
2008 - 397 in 11 games (36 ppg) (3-8 on the season) and only 10 to Michigan - so, 39 ppg to everyone else.

2015 - (final year with Heacock as DC) = 249 in 12 games (20.8 ppg) (10-2 on season, no contest vs. Stoney Brook or would have been 11-2)

Brian George record as defensive coordinator
2016 - 334 in 13 games (26.0 ppg) (9-4 on season) includes Maine (3 pts)
2017 - 369 in 14 games (26.5 ppg) (11-3 on season) includes Elon (13 pts)
2018 - 397 in 13 games (30.5 ppg) ( 7-6 on season) includes VMI (3 pts)
2019 - 386 in 12 games (32.2 ppg) (6-6 on season) includes Murray St. (0 pts)

Adjusted for cupcakes:
2016 - 331 in 12 games (27.6 ppg)
2017 - 356 in 13 games (27.4 ppg)
2018 - 394 in 12 games (32.8 ppg)
2019 - 386 in 11 games (35.1 ppg)

Got worse each year except 2017 when it stayed constant after jumping up following Heacock departure.

Not hard to see how defense affects a season. Also how our defense slides after solid seasons. When Beckman came in and he was the DC with Ward as run game defensive run coordinator and Paul Nichols as defensive pass coordinator:

2009 - 452 in 12 games (37.8 ppg) (5-7 on season)
2010 - 372 in 13 games (28.0 ppg) (8-5 on season)
2011 - 412 in 13 games (31.7 ppg) (9-4 on season) gave up 63 each to NIU; WMU
and Beckman was a defensive coordinator at Oklahoma State.... Not such a great performance and only a moderate improvement over the final horrid seasons under Amstutz. Thank God, we only gave up 10 to Michigan in 2008.

So he was 22-16 at Toledo and averaged giving up (32.5 ppg) (1,236 pts in 38 games, including Air Force in bowl game that he did not actually coach)

Seems like the cut-off to a great season is less than 20 ppg. So we have to improve by 2 TD's per game on defense from 2019.

Do you think that can be accomplished with just the new DC current team and new incoming players

I know we don't like talking about Ohio State on here, but OSU fixed their defense from one season to the next by simply getting a new DC and a philosophy change. Same players, minus those that graduated or went pro early.
